Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is looked upon by many experts as a work in which descibes the romantic period. The Romantic period was an artistic, literary, and intellectual movement that originated in Europe toward the end of the 18th century. In Frankenstein there are many romantic characteristics, for example; the power of nature. Nature is one of the most important factors in Frankenstein because Victor Frankenstein , the protagonist, defies the laws of nature by bringing the dead back to life. Romantics view exploration and exotic places as a new freedom. The mountains are one of those exotic settings and is described for pages so that you can have an exotic image of the mountains and feel as if you were there. “I wept like a child. "Dear mountains! my own beautiful lake! how do you welcome your wanderer? Your summits are clear; the sky and lake are blue and placid. Is this to prognosticate peace, or to mock at my unhappiness?" (Frankenstein 91) The mountains are where the Romantics may leave reality and enter a new world for as many times as they please. Furthermore, Victor chases the monster and ends up in the arctic ocean in order to end it all. The arctic is an unknown area and this creates a mysterious and isolated mood that catches the reader’s attention. Exploring the unknown and gaining new knowledge excites romantics because it means that one is stepping out of a comfort zone known only to society“The immense mountains and precipices that overhung me on every side - the sound of the river raging among the rocks, and the dashing of the waterfalls around, spoke a power might of Omnipotence” (Frankenstein 114). When Victor looks at the mountains, he feels at ease and forgets about his problems because the beauty of the mountains free him from the problems.
