Roland felt very angry emotions towards Cort so he wanted to take out his anger by defeating him. Another reason why Roland would chase the man in black is to learn more about the dark tower. “The man in black laughed - a full, hearty laugh that seemed to challenge the receding echo of gunshots. ‘Would you kill all your answers so easily, gunslinger?’” (King 142). In this quote, Roland blindly shot at the man in black after he finally caught up to him. The man in black smartly reminds him that he has the answers that Roland wants so he should stop shooting. The boy slips, and the Gunslinger has a choice either to save the boy or go with the man in black. He chooses man over the child because he believes that the man in black holds vital answers about the Dark Tower. Roland goes against his emotions and feelings for the boy to go with the man in black. The Gunslinger was motivated to chase the man in black across mountains and deserts to seek the approval of those closest to him and to try and learn about the Dark
