The death of Matthew Shepard took place in a small town, Laramie, Wyoming. Laramie was known as an equality town, but after the death it was known as a hate crime town. In the article by the New York Times, “Suspect to Stand Trial” the author focused on the trial, while the song by Melissa Etheridge, “Scarecrow” focused on the emotions that came from Matthew’s death. In “Scarecrow” Melissa sang, “I search my soul, My heart and in my mind, to try and find forgiveness, This is someone’s child, With pain unreconciled, Filled up with father’s hate, Mother’s neglect, I can forgive But I will not forget”. This quote shows how she felt about Matthew Shepard’s death and how his parents felt. She could forgive that they killed him, but she will
The story takes place in Eden Mills, Mississauga, Ontario, Eric Walters’ hometown, and it takes place in present time. This is evident by the modern technology seen in the novel, and the lack of any futuristic technology.
“If a man has not discovered something that he will die for, he isn't fit to live.” This quote was said by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. James Earl Ray was the man in charge of taking the life of this amazing man. King states that he will die for what he believes in and he did exactly that. He died for the right of equality for all human beings. The murder of an American patriot, Martin Luther King Jr., caused James Earl Ray to leave a legacy of hatred, which has left disgrace upon his name.
I chose Tom Fleet from the book Walk Two Moons. I think that Tom Fleet is mysterious. I think that Tom Fleet is mysterious because he surprises Grams, Gramps, and Sal by saying he it is “private property”. He also was holding a long bowie knife. In the text, one thing he says is “This here’s private property” (creech 86).
When it comes to Frankenstein people know about the monster and do not think about the man in the letters. The book Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley, was published in 1818, but was set some time in the 1700s. Mary Shelley introduces the character Robert Walton to the readers in the form of letters between him and his sister, Margaret. Robert is a wealthy explorer who is on a ship sailing through the Arctic. Readers can learn more about Robert’s character from the quote, “I am too ardent in execution, and too impatient of difficulties.”
In the beginning of the novel, Cole Mathews behaves cruelly when he becomes emotional. For example, when the narrative begins, we learn that he is in serious trouble for beating a kid named Peter Driscal up, because Peter divulged the truth about the boy robbing a hardware store. Later on, our main character is sitting in a detention cell as a consequence of his actions and becomes exasperated over not getting what he wants. Hence, he throws an outburst of violence. “[Cole’s] rage ignited. [He] jumped to his feet and stormed across the cell. He tipped over his metal-framed bed and started hitting the wall harder and harder. Soon blood from his scraped knuckles smeared the concrete.” (Mikaelsen 25). During those episodes, the protagonist and oddly enough the antagonist becomes very displeased, but also very scared and sad.
I give the book Michael Vey 1 The Prisoner of Cell 25 5 out of 5 stars because it is action filled, the main character goes through many different emotions, and because it has many unexpected turns.
The way Father Flynn is around people shows his innocence. He has a positive impact on the school to everyone except Sister Aloysius. Father Flynn creates the message, not guilty by his relationships. Many people find him likable. Teachers trust him and go to him for help. David Mueller is a black student at St. Nicholas, whom does not feel like he belongs. However, David Mueller finds a father figure in Father Flynn and looks at him as a role model. David Mueller’s mom also had great respect for Father Flynn because he included David Mueller and made him feel appreciated at St. Nicholas. “You know, Father Flynn, Father Flynn. He looks up to him. The man gives him his time, which is what the boy needs. He needs that” (Stanley 44). Also, the mother did not hear about David Mueller getting bullied when he came home from
If you had children, how would you treat them? Would you love and care for them with all of your heart like they deserve?(pathos) Mayella Ewell did not get the privilege to be loved and cared for like she deserved. Bob Ewell, her father, was an example of an awful dad, who raped, beat, took the little money he had earned, and used it towards alcohol, instead of buying the necessities for his children. He is a drunk, extremely racist, and on top of all that, a horrible dad, which clearly makes him the worst character from all of the books we have read.
In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the reader is introduced to a character known as Boo Radley who is thought to be a monster or a horrible person, but is later a hero to Jem and Scout Finch. Scout is the narrator of the story and one of the main characters, Jem is Scouts brother and is with her when she tells the story, and Boo is a character who stays in his house and never comes out. At first Jem and Scout hear rumors about how Boo Radley joined a gang, skipped church, harassed and assaulted people, and acted as a scoundrel, in the novel it states “As Mr. Radley passed by, Boo drove the scissors into his parent’s leg, pulled them out, wiped them on his pants, and resumed his activities” (Lee 13).According to the Quote that shows that
William James includes the quote from Josiah Royce as it perfectly supports his overall point. The quote touches upon the theme that although humans are respectively different, they are also extremely alike. “Thou hast regarded his thought, his feelings, as somehow different from thine. Thou hast said, ‘a pain in him is not lime a pain in me, but something far easier to bear.’ He seems to thee a little less living than thou.” (Josiah Royce) Even more so, the quote nails the fact that no individual is necessarily superior in the human sense. Every individual is allowed to express their feelings even if other people do not believe it is justified or worthy enough. Although people may have higher paying jobs and own expensive things, their genetic
Imagine losing a job you have had for 20 years all because of a ninth grade student who was creating a disturbance in your class and told a bunch of lies. In the book, Nothing but the Truth, Philip Malloy is a ninth grade student at Harrison High School. During morning announcements the national anthem is played and Philip hummed along with it even though they are supposed to stand in a respectful silence. After he did it the second and third times he was sent to the office by his homeroom teacher, Miss Narwin, and suspended for causing a disturbance. When he told reporters what happened the word got out quickly. In the end miss Narwin got fired in an attempt to save the school budget and Philip moved to a new school. Philip Malloy is to blame
A lot of the townspeople from Laramie were shocked that the criminals were from their own community. Many people were in denial that something like this could happen in their town, while others wanted to make the townspeople accountable. “My secret hope was that they were from somewhere else, that then of course you can create that distance: We don't grow children like that here. Well, it's pretty clear that we do grow children like that here” (Jacobus 1640). “it happened here...we need to own this crime. I feel. Everyone needs to own it...We ARE like this” (Jacobus 1645). The people of Laramie had once believed that they were a live-and-let-live kind of place and now they were beginning to doubt this. “live and let live. That is such crap...basically what it boils down to: if I don't tell you I'm a fag, you won’t beat the crap out of me. I mean, what's so great about that?” (Jacobus 1645). People were left in a state of confusion. Even the criminals “don’t seem to understand the reasons for their crime any better than anyone else” (Evans). Matthew Sheppard's attack influenced the attitudes of many people in Laramie and forced them to realize the truth of the attitudes of others in the community.
In the early ages, mankind was savage. William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, proves that humans are savage still today. Golding does a good job of showing the readers that without civilization, people go mad. Jack shows savage ways early in the book, and it is obvious that things will only get worse. Lord of the Flies shows that when left alone, even the most unlikely people will resort to savage ways.
The men that go off and face war have not changed from back then to modern day today. They not only face different battles because of new technology, yet they all still love and breathe the same way. It needs to be acknowledged that love never changes and all forms of love are constant throughout life. Love always seemed to be the safety net to our leap of faith with partners in a relationship. Having that scenario play out may seem different... love might have the outer shell of being different but overall in the end, going back to the basics.. This scene is in the intro and is Jimmy cross giving an explanation of why he has the photographs. He goes into depth of how his love is consistent with Martha. He talks about how he thinks about her all the time. He can’t get her out of his
In the book, I Am Malala written by Malala Yousafzai and Christina Lamb, there are several pivotal quotes that help one understand the struggles Malala faced during her lifetime. The struggles Malala faced were to go against the Taliban and fight for the education of all people. A first claim shows how Malala felt about education. “Is education not the right of these children?” (Yousafzai and Lamb 84). At this time, the Taliban felt that girls should not attend school and that they should not receive an education. As a way to retaliate, Malala and her father printed that quote onto thousands of leaflets to be distributed to the people of Swat. Malala and her father wanted the people to stop and think about how everyone deserves the right to
