Boxing, an official sanctioned sport in the early 20th century, is a sport that is known as one of the most violent and physically demanding sports on the earth. Professional boxers that get paid to fight must be in top shape in order to preform at the highest level. Being a professional boxer is a tough life. Boxers train hard for many months leading up to one fight and either win, lose, knock out the opponent or even get knocked out. The sport has been around for centuries, but has most recently taken off over the last 100 years. It is a multibillion dollar industry with fighters taking home hundreds of thousands of dollars if not even millions of dollars for big matches. In his novel Papa Jack, Roberts tells the story of the famous African American boxer Jack Johnson. He details the boxers rise to fame and fortune and his downward spiral that would soon follow. In Papa Jack, Roberts displays life of a professional boxer through firsthand accounts with events that happened during Johnson’s life and shows how boxing not only influenced his life but also how he influenced the African American community.

The part about the Rocky statue that makes it so universal is that it represents the tale of an underdog. This underdog tale not only relates to Philadelphians, but it inspires people everywhere. An interview was conducted where boxers were asked to talk about Rocky’s impact on Philadelphia. Justin Sargus, a boxer in Philadelphia says “The impact it has had on fighters, and what they think they can do, and endure, and the way they go about training and style is certainly still felt today. A world championship is a possibility, based from being a relative unknown”. (Dinero 1) The statue gives Philadelphia something monumental to stand on and something to represent all the hardship the city has been through. The Rocky character also embraces the culture, and lifestyle of a true Philadelphian. He eats at the same restaurants, runs through the same streets, and speaks like a Philadelphia. This gives the statue a personal connection to the people of the city, one they can claim as their own. The places and stores seen in the movie are very popular tourist attractions in the city. Zeke Ferguson from Di Brunos Bros, a popular site from the movie says “It is an iconic story of an underdog which I think all Philadelphians have been at, at one time or another, and it shows you can succeed in the face of overwhelming odds” (Dinero 1) The city is filled with an enormous amount of diversity and just as the city and its people have been through hard times, so has Rocky. The statue also appeals to people worldwide not only because of its iconic underdog story, but because of its ability to appeal on a personal level. Whenever failure is upon someone, Rocky inspires them to come back strong because if you work hard you can achieve your goals. When you think of famous and successful people you may never look beyond the glitz and glamour of it all. Most don’t recognize the hard work, perseverance, or maybe even demons one had to fight to get to where he or she is at. The 2014 film The Bronx Bull tells the amazing story of legendary boxer Jake La Motta. Due to being angry, confident, and brave, Jake La Motta fought like he didn’t deserve to live most of his life.

The film Mad Max: Fury Road was directed by George Miller and was released by Warner Bros. Pictures, in May 2015. The main characters in the film are Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) and Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne). The film also features other important characters such as Nux (Nicholas Hoult) and the five wives of Immortan Joe (Zoë Kravitz, Courtney Eaton, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Abbey Lee and Riley Keough). The film takes place in a post-apocalyptic future, where humanity is broken and where resources such as water and gasoline are limited. It then follows Imperator Furiosa who sets out to escape the reign of tyrannical Joe, taking with her his five wives. This betrayal results in a long-lasting road battle,

The documentary, “Unforgivable Blackness” directed by Ken Burns casts light on the extraordinary life story of legendary boxer Jack Johnson. The documentary is about the barriers Jack Johnson had to overcome to satisfy his hunger for becoming the best and living “The American Dream.” Johnson had humble beginnings in Galveston, Texas and it was in those beginnings that glimpses of his bright future were slowly but surely beginning to show. Through out his life, he showed independence, relentlessness, ability to improvise, call attention to himself and get around rules meaning to tie him down. Jack Johnson was a self made man who had the drive to go forward and achieve what he wanted to achieve

The main plot of the story starts with a successful boxer in the roaring twenties. James J. Braddock fought his way to becoming the best-known boxer ever. He is a very well known boxer in his day. The Great Depression takes a toll on everyone in the country. James has lost pretty much everything he worked his life for. This did not stop James from trying his best to provide for his family and even got the chance to fight in the ring once again. This has become the best comeback in the face of great hardships. He never gave up to shoot for his goal to beat the best-known boxer at the time, Max Baer. No matter how hard it was back home he fought his best to get his life back. He then got the nickname of “The Cinderella Man” for his comeback

Creed, is a movie that performances by Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Johnson, Apollo Creed’s son, Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa, and Tessa Thompson as Bianca was directed by Ryan Coogler. Adonis Johnson, who is the son of former heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, was living in the youth facility when Mary Anne, Creed’s widow visited him and decided to adopt him. Adonis work as a professional, but he was not satisfied with his current life. Mary Anne was so disappointed with him because Adonis’s father passed away in the ring, and she did not want Adonis to follow his dad’s step. Despite the fact that he wanted to pursue his dream to work as a professional fighter, he gave up his current job and went to Philadelphia. He found Rocky Balboa there and he requested Balboa to become his mentor and trained him. In the process of becoming a professional fighter, Adonis went through challenges. Even though Adonis faces challenges in life, he overcomes them because he never gives up.

The movie Cinderella Man is a biographical film of boxer James J. Braddock that illustrates his struggle through the Great Depression. Movies often exaggerate the suffering of the Great Depression or just gloss over it, but Cinderella Man accurately shows the prevailing attitude of the time through the facial expressions of the actors and the obstacles they overcome. In the film, the people on the street and in the crowd in the boxing arenas appear worried and never smile. The only time that people appear happy is while watching the excitement of a boxing match. This shows how important sporting events like boxing were to a public which had very little to cheer about. In a time when few people had television sets in their houses, listening to a boxing match on the radio let people imagine the fights through their own interpretations in their heads. The movie correctly shows how boxing was a temporary shelter from the suffering for many.

The movie I chose to do my movie analysis on was Sin Nombre. I chose this movie because it stood out to me the most, mainly because of the title in Spanish. I used four concepts while analyzing this epic movie. First I applied the power elite theory to see who had the power in this power city and how they used their power. Then I used the social conflict theory to see what caused the people to get into the gangs and how the gangs acted to the people. The socialization theory is shown in the sense that the gang makes people believe that they are a part of a family when they join. The last concept I used was deviance because of all the violence that happened in the movie.

Cinderella Man was an incredibly magnificent and uplifting film that followed the life of the “Bulldog”, later entitled “Cinderella Man”, starring Russell Crowe as James J. Braddock, the American heavyweight boxer. Primarily, Cinderella Man embodies strength and willpower as once-undefeated heavyweight fighter, Braddock’s loses started to rapidly accumulate, so bad that he was released from his boxing contract and was merciless impeded from fighting. Correspondingly, deprived of work the bulldog began to undertake hard labor during the Great Depression to counterbalance myriad bills and overdue payments. Moreover, Braddock and his wife Mae together had three children to nourish. Correspondingly, years later, Joe Gould played by Paul Giamatti, was Braddock’s old boxing manager and contracted him one last concluding fight, which he won. Hence, the Bulldog started to train again and James J. Braddock was reborn after countless winning comebacks. Ultimately, Jimmy undergoes a fairy tale rise from a poor local fighter to the heavyweight-boxing champion of the world.

In cinema, there are many memorable scenes, but few are as iconic as a Rocky training montage. The horns from the montage’s music blast a feeling of triumph as you watch the fictional character, Rocky Balboa, train. The emotions from this scene can make the laziest person feel like they can run ten miles without the feeling of fatigue. Rocky is a series of six movies about a fictional boxer named Rocky Balboa, played by Sylvester Stallone, and the triumphs of his boxing career. Rocky has an exhilarating boxing match as an underdog in each one of his movies. Also, in all the movies, there is often a singular theme of perseverance despite any of the hardships Rocky must face. The same theme can be found in the spin-off of the Rocky series, Creed. Creed takes place after Rocky’s retirement from boxing. The new protagonist, Adonis Creed, is the illegitimate child of the late former heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed. Adonis receives help from Rocky to pursue his career boxing professionally. Along his journey, Adonis comes into contact with many characters that portray the same characteristic of being able to persevere through their challenges and afflictions. Although there seems to be a singular message, Creed’s recurring theme of perseverance can be expressed in many ways because of the various adversities each character had to overcome.

     For the following analysis, I will be discussing the movie Fight Club’s two main characters. They are “Jack” played by Edward Norton, and Tyler Durden played by Brad Pitt. However the twist to the movie turns out that Jack and Tyler are the same person and Tyler is Jack’s real name. Tyler the character is everything that Jack the character is not. The story narration is provided by the protagonist of “Fight Club,” “Jack.” The ambivalent protagonist, who only refers to himself as “Jack.” An ambivalent protagonist, usually the main character, is someone the audience likes, but who possesses character flaws.

This movie is mainly about a narrators search for meaning and the fight to find freedom from a meaningless way of life. It setting is in suburbia, an abandoned house located in a major large city. Ed Norton, plays the nameless narrator, Brad Pitt, is Tyler Dunden, and Helena Boaham Carter is Marla Singer, the three main characters. David Fincher directs this film in 1999, which adapted it from the novel written by Chuck Palahnuik.

“Men and women can't be friends, because sex always gets in the way”, is the main theme of the movie “When Harry met Sally”. The script is a good example of the interpersonal communication ten stage model by Mark Knapp. This developmental model entails the stages of a relationship from it’s infancy to an ending. In the movie we can clearly identify all ten stages of this model.
