The relevant outgrowth of American realism, another relatable writing tendency derived in 1880s. Similar as the purport of realism, Naturalism detailed theto suggest that social heredity and the environment had an inevitable effect in shaping human characteristic (Elliot 497). It opposed to literacy movements in the early period, such as Romanticism or Surrealism, in which subjects receive highly symbolic, idealistic disposition. However, naturalism contained relatively passive and obscure view of the world. Unlike the realism, it focuses more on literary technique, which insinuated a philosophical position: the human beings are considered as "human beasts" (Elliot 502). By utilizing a version of the scientific method to illustrate the surrounding, naturalism writers construct the laws behind the forces that govern human lives, which could be studied and understood by the audience. From the naturalism literature, nature was sculptured as an indifferent force acting in the lives of human beings (Elliot 507). The universe, typically, has been described as
Eventually Tammany Hall’s grip over New York City plummeted when Fiorello LaGuardia became Mayor in 1933. LaGuardia had been an outspoken critic of the prohibition of alcohol, but he was passionate about enforcing illegal gambling laws. At that time, New York City’s slot machines generated roughly $180 million a year in profits for the mob, but under LaGuardia’s direction the NYPD confiscated thousands of slot machines. In fact, he once held a press conference as he threw several of the “mechanical pickpockets” in the Atlantic Ocean. LaGuardia took such a strong stance against gambling that he managed to have pinball machines banned. As a result, New York police officers confiscated and destroyed over 3,000 pinball machines. Just a year after his appointment to the Circuit Court, McCarthy made a successful bid to serve as a Republican U.S. Senator. I would rather live in the 2015 than the 1900's. One primary reason would be the entertainment. Entertainment has changed a lot from the 1900's, In the 1900's for entertainment you would have a picnic or go watch a play. Nowadays everybody goes to the movies, play videogames which is more exciting and fun to do. Another reason would be the technology. In the 1900's the phones could not perform actions that they do now, you can only use them to talk and they were not portable as they are now. In 2015 phones can perform many things like take , pictures, go on social networks, listen to music and on top of everything they were portable. The last reason would be fashion. In the 1900's men had to wear suits after they were sixteen. Now men are
He also had a reputation as a progressive who has supported Theodore Roosevelt from 1912 to 1916 and battled monopolies in his home state. At the Republican convention that occurred in Cleveland, Landon was the first runner for the presidential nomination. Landon won the nomination on the first ballot with 984 votes to 19 (Lakeside Publishing Group). Landon was a moderate conservative and notoriously lackluster public speaker who the party hoped could take votes from FDR in the rural Midwest (American President: A Reference Resource). The businessmen were really happy to hear that Landon was selected for the presidential candidacy. He was their favorite because he was an oil man and a fiscal conservative and had balanced his state’s budget. Even the Republican progressives liked him too because he was a former Bull Mooser who had sponsored for the New Dealish measures as a Governor. Landon was from a farm state which also showed that he had the chances of winning back the Western farmers who had gone for FDR in 1932. Another plus point of Landon was that he was an up-front and simple man who was called the “Kansas Lincoln.” The vote for Landon’s running mate, Chicago publisher Colonel Frank Knox was undivided (Boller, P.241). Knox had a reputation as a conservative and could point to service in the Rough Riders of Theodore Roosevelt in the Spanish-American war of 1898 (Lakeside Publishing Group). Knox representing

Michel Foucault’s work within philosophy has made important impacts when it comes to understanding how power affects a capitalist state. Believed that history of a country should how the past created a better future for society but in most cases through history, that was not the case. One of the examples that Foucault uses is how the mentally ill were treated in the Renaissance compared to the 18th century. During the Renaissance period, the mental ill people were allowed to seen within society and were seen as useful and gave wisdom into their society rather than in the 18th century. People with mental illness were put away and see as a burden to society and seen as needed to being cured by sinister people. Another example that Foucault discuss
