Different authors have different styles just as humans express the way we feel by the clothes we dress in or the items we put on our bodies. Styles of types of writing are diction, syntax, and imagery. One author that can easily express his style with these ways is the author Robert Fulghum. In his short story “Dinner Dandruff” his style is expressed greatly by stating his point of views on a serious tone but adding just enough humour. Robert shows his style through diction by instead of stating gross and unsanitary he uses words like “the stuff in the sink drainer was lethal and septic.” He then went on to state that if you did not wash your hands after touching this lethal and septic items they “would give you leprosy, or something worse.”
Each writer has their own style and uses syntax and diction in different and unique ways. Chapter 12 of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” written by Mark Twain demonstrates three types of writing. The novel and the short story consist of the first-person point of view style of writing, as well as patterned syntactic sentences, and finally informal diction with polysyndeton.
Each Author is unique they write about many different pieces, but they all have this set of principles they go by. Every author thinks about these four main concepts when they write and they are audience, genre, context, purpose. They first think about who will want to read their work so try to establish an audience. The Author next has to determine what their writing will be. They have to decide whether it's science fiction or any other, but they understand it important tell the genre of the work. Authors cannot be all over the place they are focused on one specific tone. Next authors contemplate why to write at all there must be a reason that is true, they all written for a purpose each author has one. Authors often write in troubling times for them like
In her editorial column “Don’t stand so close to me”, Marti Schodt creates a sickening, stomach-churning tone through her use of diction in order to convince the reader that sickness spreads through the contact of others and should be prevented. Throughout the writer’s column, she mentions words to describe situations negatively, “..waves five filthy fingers expecting a high five. Inwardly cringe, I raise a hand, and immediately feel the cooties on my palm, finger tips, and bloodstream.” Schodt describes the bacteria that contacted between her hand and her fellow pupil in a descriptive way, mentioning of how that one connection had already passed through her body.
He often changes his tone between different paragraphs. He persuades the audience by using logos, giving statistics on an issue. The style in which he writes is in a formal but then changes his tone in the last paragraph. For example, in this sentence he used in the last paragraph, “Make fun if you will of these kids launching lawsuits against the fast-food industry, but don't be surprised if you're the next plaintiff.” He sets this sentence towards his other intended audience to not think bad of those children. He appeal to their emotions by pathos. He knows by appealing to one’s emotions has a strong effect. It assists him to persuade certain people that think with their emotions rather than with
Did you know there was a name for the nasty, icky, gross, unsanitary gunk that is in the bottom of your sink after you wash dishes? Well there is and the name of it is dinner dandruff just like the essay by Robert Fulghum. Fulghum wrote the essay Dinner Dandruff to entertain the reader along with relating to them about a problem that everyone that washes dishes has. In the essay he uses many different types of author’s style but the main three are diction, syntax, and imagery. Diction is the author's word choice while syntax is the author's sentence choice, and imagery is where you can picture what's happening while reading the story.
Authors produce their work in certain ways to give it a certain atmosphere and mood. Examples of this are shown in Tim O Brien’s novel The Things They Carried. “Because the land was mined and booby-trapped, it was SOP for each man to carry a steel-centered nylon-covered flak jacket, which weighed 6.7 pounds…Because you could die so quickly, each man carried at least one large compress bandage…Because the nights were cold, and because the monsoons were wet, each carried a green plastic poncho”. Another example of structure is shown in Kevin powers The Yellow Birds. “Or should I have said that I wanted to die, not in the sense of wanting to throw myself off of that train bridge over there, but more like wanting to be asleep forever because there isn’t any making up for killing women or even watching women get killed”.
Many authors used certain styles of writing to manipulate the way the reader perceives the information. The style they use is used to make the reader feel the way the author wants them to feel about a certain aspect of the literary work. The writing styles of the authors for Chronicle of a Death Foretold and Perfume make certain choices in their writing style to do just that.
The writer’s style is his personal choice dependent on the setting, plot and characters means these three aspects of the story will be taken by the author and decided how it will best tell his story. The writer must use his skill with words to develop his style for the story, since the reader is completely at the mercy of the writer waiting for his words to write so he can feel, hear, see, smell and contemplate what is going to happen next. The writer must tell the reader what the world looks like and how it changes, who is in it and where the reader is going. One writer will deal with a genre completely different from another, developing their own style and vision. Often a writer’s style can become so familiar readers they can recognize the author just from reading a passage.
Although many writers and speakers have their own different styles of delivering what they desire to
While reading a well written story I am conscious of the atmosphere the author creates through the particular style they choose to use. As a reader, I am able to admire the way in which the writer presents their characters and setting, and be conscious of the overall voice used in their writing. The "voice" used in the writing is often the most obvious aspect of an author's style to detect. The author's "voice" is the way
Style – in writing, style can best be defined as the way an author makes use of his or her words in regards to language. The word choices in which the author uses throughout the story can help establish the uniqueness of his or her use of speech through the story’s title, structure, punctuation, setting and the communication between characters.
Authors use various styles of writing to appeal to different types of audiences. The Jungle by Upton Sinclair and “The Most Dangerous Job” by Eric Schlosser both utilize ethos, pathos, and logos writing styles to convince the audience of their ideals. An author uses ethos in writing to show his/her credentials and explain why he/she is credible. Pathos appeals to an audience’s emotions and makes the audience feel sympathy or pity. The author draws feelings out of the audience and compels the audience to feel what the author wishes them to feel. Logos uses facts, statistics, historical and literal analogies, and quotes from authorities on a subject to convince the audience with logic or reason. Upton Sinclair and Eric Schlosser have the goal of exposing the corruption in the meatpacking industry, but the authors develop their arguments through similar and contrasting approaches.
An author’s writing style expresses a different view to their story. Many authors vary in their writing style is shown in the story My First Free Summer, the poem Exile, the poem All American Girl and the short story Antojos. Alvarez’s writing style consists of many factors because she uses imagery, figurative language, and point of view to convey a theme.
Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner were two of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. While they lived during the same period, their writing styles differed drastically. This can be seen in texts such as Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants” and “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place,” and Faulkner’s “Barn Burning”. Hemingway’s style puts little focus on specific character details, which makes his stories seem like they could be about any person, including the reader, while Faulkner’s style puts a lot of focus on specific character details, which makes every detail and every character seem important to the reader. Both authors have styles indirect to their points, which forces the readers to figure out information on their own and leaves the purposes of texts more open to interpretation.
