Before 1760, a Canadian society was developing a replica of the western world by building on the ideas of agriculture and commerce. The agriculture settlement in New France was organized by the use of the seigneurial system. The seigneurial system in Europe created a complete framework for hierarchy and the economic relationship between landlords and tenants. In New France, the seigneurial system was a system of organized land distribution that dates back to 1627 and was formally terminated in 1854. 80 percent of the people in New France were confined to rural areas under this system of occupation and land distribution. The small piece of land was called a “plot”. A plot was one thin strip of land, and the land was separated to maximize access to water along the St Lawrence River into small strips known as seigneuries. Land plots were given to seigneurs, or landowners, who later gave farms to inhabitants, or farmers, who paid the seigneurs for this.

The book is written so that McMillian is giving the reader the details and the reader must follow along with her. McMillan makes it a habit to often pull from sources and provide direct quotes that were spoken during the conference. The 16th century is often referred to as “The Rise of The West” by modern day historians due to the colonization and Imperial expansion of the Western world by European powers. Expeditions appointed by European monarchs to discover routes to the abundant resources in China and the Indies brought some of the first European explorers to the shores of present day Canada. French explorer Jacques Cartier was delegated the task of finding a western passage to the East and when he crossed the Atlantic and landed on the shores of present day Newfoundland in 1534 he thought he had found Asia. When Cartier inserted a cross in the soil in the Gaspé Peninsula declaring it for France he unknownly fabricated the first colony of New France. Cartier, escorted by several ships searched the Eastern coast of North America for precious goods to transport back to King François I of France to solidify backing for future expeditions. Between 1534 and 1541 Cartier made three voyages to North America each time bringing captives and furs back to France in an attempt to illustrate the wealth of these new found lands. After failed attempts to secure a permanent settlement near Stadacona (present-day Quebec City) and further failed attempts to colonize lands further south the French turned the attention to their own lands where a religious civil war was waging. It was not until over sixty years later that the French returned to North America with a new approach in mind.

We recently watched the film Paris is Burning, a documentary about black drag queens in Harlem and their culture surrounding balls. Directly related we also read two feminist critiques, Gender is Burning: Questions of Appropriation and Subversion by Judith Butler and Is Paris Burning by bell hooks. Two areas of critique I focus on and question are the critiques regarding the filmmaker, audience and drag queens and how they participate to reinforce a heterosexual racist patriarchy. Furthermore I ask if this line of investigation is the most beneficial way to view and understand the film and its various participants.

Antoine Watteau’s La Perspective (View through the Trees in the Park of Pierre Crozat) uses many elements of the Rococo style of painting to instill a sense of intimacy. In this painting, members of the elite society gather unceremoniously in a wooded clearing. The people make casual exchanges as they mingle in the park. Trees and foliage dominate a majority of the painting. A small white building can be seen in the background through a clearing in the trees. Watteau uses color, composition, setting, and pose in the painting to create intimacy.

Beginning in the mid-1980’s, a number of efforts were initiated to bring awareness and enlightenment to the actual tragedy of AIDS. Two films that evolved out of these awareness campaigns were the documentaries “Paris Is Burning” and “How to Survive a Plague” . Both films, although in significantly diverse ways, provide a window into the alternative lifestyles of LGBT people of the times and the problems and issues they faced. A comparison of these two documentaries demonstrates the initial fears of the public and affected people and the beginnings of acceptance or at least tolerance of these alternative lifestyles.

Georges-Eugene Haussmann was born in Paris on the 27th of March 1809. He studied Law at the College Henri IV located in the Latin Quarter on the Left Bank. In 1831 he entered the French civil service and became Prefect of the Seine on the 29th of June 1853. He was hand chosen to carry out the social plans of Napoleon III, who wished to improve Paris after a trip to London inspired him.
