Organizational Structure Robbins and Judge define Organizational Behavior as, "how job tasks are formally divided, grouped, and coordinated (Robbins & Judge, 2009, p. 519)." My organization's structure is Chain of Command. I've worked within this structure, in one form or another, for so long that I don't give much thought into its intricacies. Now that I am exploring and learning more about organizational structure I am fascinated to learn of the different organizational designs.
The Bureaucracy Working in the military has brought me to become familiar with this design. First off, I have a very structured chain of command and with routine, specialized operational tasks. It's important for the military to keep this rigid structure and chain of command because of the high rate of turnover. When I start work at a new duty station I am filling the job of someone who just left and someone else is filling the position that I just vacated and so forth and so on. Having the rigid rules and structure makes operating procedures very clear and precise for new employees who need to get up to speed quickly. This is important for me because, even though my specialty is air traffic control, not all of the same operating procedures apply at each duty station. Robbins and Judge explain this by stating how the bureaucracy design helps the middle management and lower level managers in that the rules and regulations replace the need for managerial discretion.
