Organizational Structure Robbins and Judge define Organizational Behavior as, "how job tasks are formally divided, grouped, and coordinated (Robbins & Judge, 2009, p. 519)." My organization's structure is Chain of Command. I've worked within this structure, in one form or another, for so long that I don't give much thought into its intricacies. Now that I am exploring and learning more about organizational structure I am fascinated to learn of the different organizational designs.
The Bureaucracy Working in the military has brought me to become familiar with this design. First off, I have a very structured chain of command and with routine, specialized operational tasks. It's important for the military to keep this rigid structure and chain of command because of the high rate of turnover. When I start work at a new duty station I am filling the job of someone who just left and someone else is filling the position that I just vacated and so forth and so on. Having the rigid rules and structure makes operating procedures very clear and precise for new employees who need to get up to speed quickly. This is important for me because, even though my specialty is air traffic control, not all of the same operating procedures apply at each duty station. Robbins and Judge explain this by stating how the bureaucracy design helps the middle management and lower level managers in that the rules and regulations replace the need for managerial discretion. There are a lot of reasons for the rank structure and the chain of command. Every reason that I am going to explain in this essay is very important. I am going to separate them into two paragraphs. The first paragraph will be about the importance of the rank structure and why the rank structure is in place. The second paragraph will be about the importance of the chain of command and why the chain of command is set into place.
Our organisation structure is tall, this is because we have many different levels of employees all reporting upwards to team leaders and then up to operational management. It has a wide chain of command with a narrow span of control. The chain of command refers to the number of levels within our organisation. The span of control is the number of employees who are directly supervised by one person.
The chain of command in the United States Army has been an organizational power that has been used for many years now and this story showed just how important and respected it is. At the beginning of this story Lieutenant Megan Davis is furious and talks about how the “straightforward rank system” in the military, seems to be more bureaucratic and complicated than she had ever experienced. She is an active duty military nurse that has been living and working on Fort Alpha, especifically in the Emergency Room (ER). Megan is the “charge nurse” meaning she is in charge and all the other nurses report to her for whatever procedure or medication they need. In the story it talks about how Megan has always loved structure so it was perfect for her joining the army because of the strong hierarchy it has.
I am familiar with the Infantry and Cavalry division of the military structure and how to make this division of the US government functional is of crucial importance. First, by the very definition, the infantry and cavalry division of military service personnel requires a special mindset. It requires a person who understands that their life as well as others will be in a dangerous state and at any stage of conflict that has to be a mindset that the individual will be comfortable with. Like the French, the U.S. Army’s military organizational structure consists of armies, corps, divisions, brigades, and battalions. The only exception is the regional commands that it uses. Each command level organization consists of a robust staff that assists commanders with developing plans and executing orders. This organizational structure provides an efficient method of commanding and controlling from the lowest to the highest level of commands.
The operations of the Armed Forces of the United States of America are based on the classical model of organizational theory. Kettle (2014) describes the classical theory of organization as having a top-down structure or approach. Within the United States Navy (USN) we refer to this as a Chain of Command. However, to further complicate this theory, the USN has two different pathways for our Chain of Command.
General Stanley McChrystal is a retired Army veteran who changed the infrastructure of the American military. He noted in order to have a thriving military in the twenty-first century we would have to do away with the original command-and-control military design. In the twentieth century command-and-control design the orders came from a designated commander of the assigned force in order to accomplish a mission. However, in Team of Teams: New Rules of Engagement for a Complex World, General McChrystal notes this design must be changed in order for the military to thrive. He then began focusing on a new way in which to direct and lead that has proven more effective and efficient.
Why it is important to follow proper instruction procedures in the military is for many reasons. As a soldier it is our responsibility to not only follow instruction/orders, but to execute the command. Not following orders can result into consequences not only for the soldier whom committed not following instructions, but also it can put others at risk too. Like your N.C.O. in charge of you, to your Team Leader, to your Section Sergeant, to your Platoon Sergeant, to your 1st Sergeant, to your Company Commander, to your Brigade Commander, and so on. I agree with you there needs to be order or there is chaos so with organizational structure gives all parties the information or ways to get information to accomplish the goal. When I was in the U. S. Navy there was structure with a chain of command and if you did not follow it you had to answer to your commander. You also knew your place in the chain of command and be prepared to answer any and all questions that were addressed to you while having respect for the party that was addressing you. Just think of it this way what if we were aboard ship and decided to go back to Hawaii without the superior officer’s orders then we would probably all end up in the brig.
The structure uses every type so that it can carry out every mission required of it. The beginning starting with the Commander-in-Chief all the way down to the Work Center Supervisor bear great responsibility to themselves, the Navy, and this Country. Each person plays an integral role in the structure and can cause major disruption if they do not play their part. The hierarchy is in place and valued but must be used in stride to evolve with the changing times so that the Navy will be relevant to each generation. The bureaucracy tends to be viewed as a necessary evil in some cases. With the US Navy the need is greater than others. Can they give up some control over certain aspects? Of course. The Navy has a long history with traditions deep in culture and respect and will be a great an integral needed service of the United States as long as it
With out the chain of command there would be no real order in how we as a whole work. The purpose of the chain of command is to tell people what they can and cannot do. So why we as a grown adults follow the chain of command, it is simple we choose to because of the fact that we raised are right hand and said yes I will. No matter how much we disagree with someone or something we should do it and then ask questions later that is the purpose of the chain without it what would we be. Consequences for disobeying the chain of command inside of the US Army are endless from as small as corrective training, verbal counseling, to being negatively counseled or given an Article 15.
Whenever a chain of command is established and followed properly, the people part of it can be very organized. Chain of command is how our military works. We have our President and Secretary of Defense at the top, and our Generals below them. The chain then trickles down through the officers and sergeants before it reaches the bottom. The bottom is where most of the work will happen, seeing as there is more lower ranked officials to come together
There is thus little chance for participation among the subordinates in the military, in the establishment of the standards of general orders. These can include anything from restrictions on alcohol during wartime to the requirement of avoiding tattoos as a soldier. The military is a fairly formal and strict hierarchical institution and orders are channeled gradually down. Difficulties in the military are generally attributed to the breakdown of this structure by lack of efficiency resulting from the inability of an individual or group of individuals to follow the chain of command. Following orders instills discipline and ensures that everyone in the military is in alignment with others' by providing a cohesive plan of instructions that ties the military together as one unit.
In the military there's a whole chain of bosses. From E1-E9, O1-O10, and W1-CW5 there's bosses. To ensure the safety and health of its soldiers. Soldiers are assigned a group of soldiers to keep track of. Squad leader are in charge of their squad what where the members are located.
The chain of command is responsible to each Navy member for solving work-related problems. When a person’s immediate senior is unable to resolve a problem , the next senior in the chain of command tries to solve the problem. If the senior at that level of command is unable to resolve the problem, it then goes to the next level in the chain of command. The problem continues to be referred to each level in the chain of command until it is resolved. You must always use the chain of command when seeking solutions to work-related problems.
