The atmosphere at Ringling College of Art and Design is too thin for me. While others here may be prospering, I've been left out to dry, desperately searching for greater specific substance. At RCAD I can't find the variation of majors that are offered at NYU. I need a school that offers a screenwriting major, or in NYU's case, a Dramatic Writing major. Ringling has provided me with little to no help over these first two semesters, leaving me to satisfy my personal needs for writing on my own. I've written scripts on my own outside of class and have constantly been formulating ideas when I'm not actually writing. This has been frustrating on two fronts. I receive no credits for my independent script-writing, and there is just not enough teaching depth provided here for me to improve my skills.
NYU Tisch offers me both the rich history of matriculating successful alumni such as the likes of Vince Gilligan, Joel Coen, and Martin Scorsese, as well as a group of talented screenwriting students who stimulate an aspect of countless possibilities. For example, during a visit to NYU, I met first-year student AJ Johnson who majors in Dramatic Writing. His academics and

The variety of people and opportunity adds to the richness of the campus. The campus life offers the level of diversity I seek, the kind I can't find here at RCAD. The depressingly small, 1,200-student school prohibits me from learning anything about the world's cultural foundation, while NYU boasts excellent ethnic diversity. The atmosphere at RCAD is suffocating me. My growth is being stunted. I've done the research, identified my needs, and selected the school where I know I'll thrive. NYU has what I need to become the scholar, writer, and citizen I must be. The most significant thought for me is imagining myself ten years from now, frustrated and dissatisfied, constantly wondering "What if?" NYU has the power to fulfill me now, without any
As upcoming high school seniors, many such as myself, desire scholarships in order to alleviate the financial burden that attending a university can bring. Though this considerable and generous scholarship prize money will be used to further my education at Texas A&M University, my main wish is to bring pride and satisfaction to my family. As a first generation student, I am humbled by the opportunity of obtaining an education in America. Since my parents were migrants from Vietnam and Hong Kong, a successful life here was unheard of many years before. Financial strains do occasionally plague our lives, however, we have not forgotten the strenuous hard work and sacrifice that my parents have conquered in order to put their two daughters through
While my goal is to be an actor, I desire an education that encompasses much more than the theatre. I not only want artistic training, but also a rich, diverse, academic education. I am committed to acting, but I know that it is necessary to write well, think critically, and holistically examine the world around me. I recognize the importance of an integrated learning environment that is both stimulating and rigorous, and I believe that the Tisch educational curriculum will assure that I meet these goals. As a devoted actor and student, Tisch School of the Arts allows for a strong, well-rounded education and yet encourages individual development and exploration.
The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of the University of Chicago is: nontraditional. The University of Chicago’s commitment to the individuality of their student body and building a diverse, quirky college community is an aspect that I truly appreciate. I am aware of many of my weaknesses, one being my reserved nature. I know at the University of Chicago I will be pushed outside of my comfort zone. I want to be challenged to think critically and outside of the box on even the smallest of issues, which is why the University of Chicago’s nontraditional approach and freedom of expression satisfies my desire for a specific type of learning and campus community. I appreciate the University of Chicago’s implementation of a quarter
After high school, I went to film school and couldn’t quite find where my niche laid. I wasn’t an expert with cameras and I was awful at anything else. When the second trimester rolled around, relief flooded me when I discovered that one of the classes was screenwriting. It was writing. Something that I was familiar with, even if I had never written in that particular format before.
Although I can’t answer all the questions about how I’ll do it, I’m certain that I will make a positive difference in the world and I am also certain that Barnard College is ideal for me. Barnard’s commitment to intellectual risk-taking and discovery and its joint theatre program are the main factors that influenced me to apply. Barnard is known for its intimate learning environment and embodies qualities that I find attractive and motivating. I’ve spent my entire life going from one close-knit group to the next. Whether it was Taekwondo, Dance, Theatre, or The Commonwealth Governor’s School, each group was empowering, nurturing, and noble in its own way. What I really adore about Barnard’s Theatre program is that it’s a holistic theatre and
NYU is a large campus contained both within itself and within NYC; I feel extremely grateful to possibly have the best of both environments. Most importantly, I feel comfortable in NYU’s environment and believe it will be a great place to challenge myself and to explore the diversity the school has to offer. The ability to attend a school that emphasizes the importance of academics, diversity, and inclusiveness is crucial to me. NYU provides the opportunity for me to focus on the impact I can make by indulging myself in a sea of different ideas and perspectives, which will give me a well-rounded education. In addition, Gallatin School of Individualized Study allows me to freely immerse myself in any topic that interests me. With such a liberty
It is an absolute pleasure to recommend Mr. Manuel Ludizaca for admission to your institution. I have served as Manuel’s writing teacher at KIPP NJ: Newark Collegiate Academy for the 2016-2017 school year. In my course, Manuel practice going through the entire writing process over a duration of three to four weeks with units that focused on narrative, expository, persuasive, and analytical forms. In this ACT aligned course, Manuel developed robust writing skills which included developing arguments, selecting appropriate and accurate evidence, and utilizing clear and effective language.
Now the question is asked, “where does the money to pay for all of this come from?” The answer lies somewhere between saving bonds, graduation money, jobs, and of course, scholarships! Missouri State University offers a large variety of scholarships with the highest rewarding scholarship giving away $12,500. This particular scholarship is the Presidential Scholarship, and is awarded to applicants who received a 30/1400 minimum ACT/SAT equivalent score and had a class rank in the top 10%, or had a 3.90 GPA (Missouri State Offices 31). The next highest awarding scholarship is the University Scholarship which gives $7,000 per year. The University S. is actually the Board of Governors Scholarship($5,000 per year) plus another $2,000 and has the same qualifications as the Presidential S. The next highest
The cultural diffusion that I experienced in New York City has encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and explore new things such as writing. Writing has become a hobby instead of an obligation. Through writing I can express myself in a way that can provide others with insight and depth to my perspective. At NYU, I will be surrounded by people from all over the world, who can contribute to my growth. NYU also will allow me to explore my myriad of interests and discover new one’s.
Allyson Loomis has the unique opportunity of teaching many courses at UW-Eau Claire, many of which include very few English majors. Loomis sees a lot of benefits that can be provided from creative writing courses, breaking it down as follows:
My interest in NYU began at the same time as my kinship with New York City. For years, I was an avid observer of all New York had to offer. I witnessed its vibrant diversity and its willingness to act as an open playground to any burgeoning individual.
The university I attend will be one that successfully challenges my academic skills while also providing an enlightening college experience. Baylor University is a school that can execute this very thing. Baylor is ranked one of the top universities in teaching undergraduate education. With this being said, Baylor is an outstanding place for me to major in biology; it will allow me to receive a strong education from a dedicated group of professors who will prepare me for the real-world and my future career. I am very interested in the medical field. Fortunately, Baylor has very close connections with one of the best medical schools in the country, Baylor College of Medicine. During the summer of 2015, I had the privilege of attending the Doc
I dedicate this collection of writings to my mother, Ozimen Ohio. I choose her because, My mother was the one who told me to take AVID in the tenth grade. My mother has also pushed me to be the best person I can be not just in school but in everything. She also has pushed me to do as best I can in all my classes. She also inspires me to never give up no matter how hard whatever I am doing is. The purpose of these writings is to talk about the benefits of AVID and why the program belongs in schools. In Addition, the collage shows what AVID means to me. Another purpose of these writings is to teach a little bit of what my future career of screenwriting is. People constantly ask what is screenwriting and what do screenwriters do when I tell them
I completed two courses last semester, including Intro to Graduate Writing and “Imagining What You Know,” with Roger Rosenblatt. While studying with Roger, I became interested in writing micro-fiction. This semester I am
No one likes to think about fall in the heat of summer, but prospective MFA students gearing up for application season, have no other choice but to spend these months drafting personal statements and writing samples. With acceptance rates lower than ever for Creative Writing programs, students spend rigorous hours critiquing their own writing and begging others (former professors, siblings, strangers) to offer feedback. As schools intend on keeping their programs boutique sized, it drives acceptance rates into the teens, tens, and five percentiles. Though the competition is not letting up, the variety of online resources that offer support to applicants is growing. Guidance from online literary websites comes in the form of writing prompts, program rankings, and personal accounts from other writers, confessing their own self-doubt as a means to make the experience of trying to become a writer less solitary. Perhaps we have less well-known artist cafes and speakeasies than our historical counterparts, but this era of intellectuals is making up for that in the way of countless forums and literary based websites that create a community among seasoned and emerging writers. Here is a list of our top seven favorite literary spots around the web for encouragement and inspiration.
