Berri and HIPEC
Dr. Berri was first exposed to patients with peritoneal mesothelioma and HIPEC in 2008, at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, where he trained as a surgical oncologist. It was through that training that he developed a strong interest in HIPEC.
“I began to operate on and take care of patients with mesothelioma, and developed a strong interest in the treatment needed and how best to ensure patients with peritoneal mesothelioma would receive the best care with the highest quality outcome,” Dr. Berri said.
In 2010 he returned to Michigan, and found that there was no formally established multidisciplinary HIPEC program in the state. So, he went about creating one.
“There was an obvious need to serve patients here who needed that type of treatment,” Dr. Berri said. “My main goal was to build a program here in Michigan that offered the equivalent level of care as any cancer center in the nation, thus allowing patients to stay home with family and friends and receive the highest quality of care.”
Since founding the Michigan HIPEC program, Dr. Berri has assembled a HIPEC team that includes several surgical and medical specialists, specialized radiologists and pathologists, social workers, dieticians, geneticists, a psychologist, a dedicated nurse practitioner and a HIPEC coordinator, who solely navigates patients through the entire process of evaluation and

For the past two decades in my medical profession, I have not seen anybody as hardworking, professional, caring and dedicated as Dr. Bushrod. The younger members of the audience sitting in back quietly chuckled when the lead doctor said that. This behavior was acceptable in the tumor board because the interaction demonstrates the power by medical specialty. Here, the lead surgeon and head pathologists (and not the junior pathologists or other sub-specialties or traditionally supporting specialties) controlled the tumor board. They possessed power and status by way of their specialty and role. In all tumor boards, it is common to see similar top-down behavior from surgeons.
First I will give a brief history of the program and its presenting issues that we face with the providers. In consultation with my supervisor and other caseworkers, it was a unanimous decision that our provider’s
A listening ear, an open mind, and a keen understanding of how the system works to the benefits of the patients, there are no bounds to my capacity to positively impact how patients experience Michigan Medicine. It would be an honor to support the system that developed me as a professional in its efforts to offer our patients and families and staff/faculty partners diverse perspectives, new ways of learning and doing to improve patients’ experiences. Cancer Treatment Centers of America is one of the main national networks when it comes to cancer care. Their method is to treat the whole person, not just the tumor in a patient’s body (Bonner). Complex and advanced-stage cancer is a specialty of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America (Bonner). They not only treat their patients, but provide many different kinds of support, whether it is nutritional counseling or mind-body therapy (State of Washington). The oncologists are not the only ones informed, the patients and caregivers are given as many details as possible (Bonner). Patients then know every option and can make informed decisions for themselves (Bonner).
