In Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space”, Swift makes use of a prominent poetic device, paradox. The rhetorical device that Taylor Swift has used again and again in the song is ‘paradox’ and it is considered as her weapon of choice in writing the entire song. For example in the first line “Nice to meet you/ Where you’ve been.” (Swift), it is contradictory. You do not care for where a person has been if you do not met him/her before, unless you knew all along that you will be meeting him or waiting for him even though you did not know who he was. The ‘nice to meet you’ line implies that she has just met him. That is just a first example of a number of paradoxes used in the entire song. Another paradox used was the comparison of “heaven and sin” and “magic and madness”. All these things would imply that the persona itself is an incredibly worthy person that could show the man incredible things that he has never even imagined possible or she is just mildly schizophrenic. Having the line “Saw you there and I thought oh my god/Look at that face, you …show more content…
Or perhaps the real artist, Taylor Swift’s purpose is to show the audience how ridiculous is the media image that has been created on her. It is a warning for both boys and girls, primarily those who are hoping to attract love from boys that love is perpetuated by its tortuousness. It is painful if boys will lose interest, that is Swift’s warning. The song revolves around a message for girls: do not be a daydream dressed like a daydream; do not be a nightmare dressed like a nightmare; do not find out what kind of a girl he wants and be like that forever, do not be heaven, do not be nice, do not be magic, never be too plain or perfect and good. You can also add torture to love and bring darkness to light, it is all about the
In “Re-Composing Space: Composition’s Rhetorical Geography,” Binkley and Smith discuss the origin and limitations of rhetorical theory used within Anglo-American composition. The authors provide five detailed sections to inform the reader. The first section introduces the Greek origin of rhetorical theory used in western civilization, while conversing less dominant rhetorical approaches. The following section, further examines classical rhetoric and the limitations imposed by ancient Greek civilization. The third section provides detail as to how higher education in Anglo-American society emulates the exclusionary practices of the Greek agora. To illustrate this point, a quote from Don Mitchell explains that the Agora, or public, was a specifically
Award winning journalist and author, Jon Krakauer, in his book, Into the Wild, analyzes the life of Chris McCandless as well as the events that ensued his death. Krakauer’s purpose is to inform the reader about how and why Chris McCandless decided to embark on a journey into the wilderness of Alaska. He adopts an empathetic tone in order to impart to his readers that Chris McCandless was a very misunderstood young adult.
Hello Julionna, I do agree with your statement of if a student writing or speech skills are not up to par the degree becomes null and void. Employers do look for employees that know how to effectively communicate whether written or oral. If one is unable to communicate properly it will cause conflict when trying to climb the ladder at the place of employment.
A prosecutor’s job is to find evidence to support his case against an individual accused of breaking the law while a defense attorney tries to present evidence to prove the innocence of the person accused. Neither can be truly be unbiased about their evidence but each of them is motivated to confirm a particular position. Much like a defense attorney, in his biography, Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer attempts to prove that McCandless’s tragedy was not due to his incompetence or lack of knowledge about the wild. He asserts emotions and rational onto McCandless’s experience as well as drawing similarities between his personal experience and McCandless’s in order to create a more sympathetic response from readers.
This postcard builds suspense in the reader’s mind. Alex saying that this adventure could kill him makes the reader interested in finding out more. “If this adventure proves fatal and you don’t ever hear from me again I want you to know you’re a great man.” (Krakauer 3).
In “Something Instead of Nothing”, Klosterman quests what motivations make people to talk, specifically in a formal interview setting. Some parts of the book write about the famous interviewers to gather their thoughts on the art of the interview. Errol Morris says, “I don’t think we have any idea who we are. I think we’re engaged in a constant battle to figure out who we are. ”(Klosterman)
Transcendentalism is to understand who oneself is by having confidence, free thought, and self-reliance. It is to isolate themselves from society and find themselves through nature, to find what they want and who they are. They must have self-reliance and leave the people they know, and isolate themselves from society, so they will not be told who they are or who they should be. Going into nature without the luxuries and only the essentials, confidence is imperative. They have to be confident in themselves to know they can survive on their own. Free thought is also crucial because they need to be able to live a simple life and explore new ways to live, while enjoying every second of it and making everything they do meaningful to them. An easy example of repetition is “Psychosocial” which refers to how society is making people more greedy. As the rest of the song is about greed and despair the tone of the chorus changes throughout the song. The repetition is mainly used to emphasise the ends of all other lines it comes after, although it seems like a catchy chorus the meaning is how having rich and greedy people to look up to causes normal people to strive to reach the same financial status as their idols. An example of a metaphor is the singer saying “Go drill your deserts, go dig your graves” likening oil barons drilling oil to them digging their own graves as they are consumed by the greed they portray in their business practices. This furthers his other point of
Throughout my essay, I make use of a few rhetorical and literary devices to make my arguments more profound and interesting to the readers. On the second paragraph I state, “with enough persistence and dedication, those harsh obstacles will fly by like a breeze” which is an example of an analogy. This analogy is present as a simile in which it explains that after working hard to overcome an obstacle, when another comes along, I will be able to get over it as if I were walking through a breeze. This sets a better image to the reader on the situation. The fourth paragraph uses an allusion when referring to “Hogwarts” which is a fictional wizardry school from the book “Harry Potter”. The buildings in the school look as if they were an ancient
Taylor Swift really knows how to have hidden messages and secrets throughout her lyrics and music videos. Taylor Swift also likes to trash talk other celebrities including Kim Kardashian and Katy Perry. Which gives a viewer a good chance to critic her lyrics and videos.
When I register for English B50 I had high expectations, I knew there were going to be lots of work involved. Although writing is not my strongest point, especially having too many grammatical errors and the constant use of fragment sentences in my assignments. English is my second language so that’s why I have trouble when writing a complete sentence without any punctuation errors or being a fragment sentence. Not having a solid topic sentence on two of the paragraph assignment is why I did not receive the full fifty points.
I decoded this message in some respects as Taylor and producer Joseph Kahn intended, which is a shocking video that puts Taylor in a whole new world, a world that the mass media describes her as. She was to me a believable character. I will be honest; I completely believed the mass media’s ideas of what Taylor Swift’s dating life is like, that is until I watched this video. In the video, I got the sense that it must be hard being in the news all the time and having rumors made up about you every time you pose with any guy.
Thesis statement: Taylor Swift is one of the most successful female artists in the world who portrays her personal experiences through her music.
In musical superstar Taylor Swift’s music video for her song “Blank Space,” she is portraying herself as the high maintenance and dramatic girlfriend that the media believes she is. The speaker of this text is the media’s perception of Taylor Swift and her message is about the disconnect between who Swift really is and who the media sees her as. I believe Swift has two purposes for this music video. One is for her character in the music video to warn her audience about the type of love that boys want, and the other for real life Taylor herself to poke holes into the media’s concept of her love life. The video is filled with satire and paradoxes to convince us that our idea of Taylor Swift is not an accurate opinion of her.
In your essay, it is mandatory to know that the paragraphs are important. Every essay has a main idea, which is also known as a topic sentence. In an essay a paragraph is united and it avoids using excessive information that is not needed. A decent paragraph progresses its main idea. Paragraphs use various rhetorical tactics such as – approaches like organization, comparison, difference, and reason and result. In an essay, numerous writers find it beneficial toward viewing a small and solid paragraph. The main idea is always specified in the start of a topic sentence. Additional sentences in an essay support the main idea through examples. In an essay a paragraph should usually be 50 – 250 words, but it doesn’t matter how many sentences you
