Bullying has been engrained in American society since the country’s founding. Bred from a capitalistic economy and competitive social hierarchy, bullying has remained a relevant issue through the years. A thorough analysis of various case studies, statistical research, law cases, and news articles was conducted to understand the issue of bullying and to find preventative measures that should be taken. The purpose of this paper will be to analyze the different rhetorical situations of numerous texts concerning bullying in school systems and understanding their relationships in that aspect. In Bully, Lee Hirsch focuses on five different families in four different states that are have specific situations that have to do with bullying. It is clear that the subject is the movement to abolish bullying, but the speaker of the movie can be broad. In Bully, Lee Hirsch uses as rhetorical questions and imagery as well as appeal to pathos, ethos, and logos. In Bully, Hirsch uses rhetorical questions throughout the movie to provoke the emotions of the viewers, which forces the audience to reflect on the cause of bullying. It also makes the audience associate themselves to the victims of bullying and ask themselves what they would do in that situation. In the beginning of the movie Hirsch explains the disease of bullying which defines the logic behind bullying to the audience which is known as an appeal to logos. In the middle, the director stirs the audience in the life of a young boy which develops an emotional appeal from the audience due to the sight of the young boy being bullied on a daily basis. The article is titled, “The Bully Plays”, because its about a collection of 24 plays based on bullying. The plays cover all sorts of bullying like, school violence, cyberbullying, suicide and more. Children are bullied through many methods, including being picked on or made to feel insecure by other peers due to their physical appearance, choices of friends, gender, gender identification, and/or other differences.
