Retention In The Second Grade Struggling through school has been something I have gone through with my daughter for going on three years. Madison is in the second grade now. I have sat with her daily helping her homework, while she cries. I contacted the school and the doctors to have her tested for a learning disability. Thankfully she doesn’t have a learning disability, however she was diagnosed with AAD/ADHD. With her diagnosis I was able to get Madison into the IEP program (individual education plan) at school. Madison is showing great improvements, but she is not where she needs to be. What would be the advantages and disadvantages to holding her back a year in school? There are several disadvantages to having a child held back. In 2003 the National Association of School Psychologists reported outcomes of …show more content…
I don’t think that there is any parent that doesn’t want the best for their child, and sometimes you really don’t know if the decision you made is the best possible choice to make. I certainly don’t want to see my child struggle in life. After weighing my options and the affects to each decision I believe that holding Madison back in the second grade will do more harm to her than good. Children with ADD/ADHD are already prone to having behavior problems, I think holding her back could enhance behavior issues. Madison also already shows self-esteem issues and I feel that holding her back while all of her friends go on to the third grade could increase the self-esteem problems that she already has. She may continue to struggle, but with the IEP I hope to see continued progress in her schoolwork. I know that the IEP can be changed based on the goals of the grade that she is in. I am not certain that this is the right choice to make, but with the research that I have done, I think it is. I hope that for Madison’s sake it
Karyss is a 2nd grade, who has repeated second. She will be turning 8 in August. She has an individualized education plan in place to support her writing and reading comprehension. As of April 29th, she started coming to for support with number sense, multiple step word problems and fact fluency. Her math grades have been three all quarter long. Cognitively, she has an even profile: General Conceptual Ability = 95 Average, Verbal = 96 Average, Nonverbal Reasoning = 96 Average, Spatial = 98 Average. These scores show that she has the ability perform on a grade level task. On the Second grade CASE 21, which is a county benchmark assessment she scored two at 39%.
My two boys, Christian and Adrian Ayala, are both A/B students and both have achieved Principal Honor Roll once every year. My 11 year old son, Adrian, has been medically diagnosed with ADD. Wright and Wright review the case of Florence County School District Four v. Shannon Carter, 510 U. S. 7, 114 S. CT. 361, (1993) among others. In the case of Shannon Carter, which a landmark decision was issued by the Supreme Court. This cause involved the school system defaulting on their "obligation to provide a free appropriate education to Shannon Carter, a child with learning disabilities and an Attention Deficit Disorder." (Wright and Wright, 2012, p.1) This case involved the school, while developing an IEP for Shannon in the tenth grade, refusing to provide the student "with a more
First, Rather than focusing on the child's learning deficiencies, emphasize and reward the child’s strengths and encourage them to find new interest and hobbies. Second it is important to meet with the child's teachers, tutors, and school support personnel to understand performance levels, and attitude toward school. After the student has been evaluated they are now eligible for special education services. Special education services are provided to student to work with a team of professionals, including your child's teacher, to develop an Individualized Education Program. The individualized education program is created to provide a summary of child’s current education and future goals within education. Children with learning disabilities need to know that they are loved and that they are not dumb. They need to know that they are intelligent normal people who just have trouble learning because their mind process words and information differently. Students with learning disabilities are just like every other student they just need more focus on certain learning
I can't help him if I don't know he's struggling. School is VERY important to me and I am also very passionate about Braydon succeeding. To me its not just going through motions its about learning and retaining the information, slapping an F on the paper isn't teaching him anything but failure. I am not a teacher so I'm not sure if that is the correct way of doing something, but that is a concern to me. Braydon's last D in math is actually what promoted me to write this email... He tore the paper out and some of the page ripped.. He raised his hand to ask for a piece of tape and Mrs. Kuithe told him to put his had down. So he did, then turned in both pieces of the assessment and one peace got lost. He received a D for this math assignment. This was a blow to the gut for us at home because we have invested so much time into teaching him how to do this math. every single question counts and this was NOT right. Again its about knowing and not just getting the grade. I understand that teaching styles differ but something isn't right here. Something isn't working. I am not sure how this works.. And I actually really never wanted to do this but... Should we conceder an IEP

A child with learning problems may be many developmental years behind their peers, this will have a big impact on what they can do in all areas of development including physical skills, social skills and intellectual skills. They may find it especially hard to interact with children of the same age or stay interested in conversation. They may also need to have one-to-one lessons at school to help educate them as they may not be at the same cognitive stage as peers. This may leave them feeling left out.
Ms. Bennett emphasized that she frequently felt unjust since the time of her placement in the IEP, but that there was nothing she could do to change the circumstance. She stated that she fell further behind in every subject in each grade, as she continued her participation in the IEP. Ms. Bennett stated that even when she moved on to the middle school and high school, she was unanimously determined to remain in the program at the beginning of the school years although Ms. Bennett vaguely indicated that
The African exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago is difficult to find. At the end of a shotgun wing consisting of Japanese, Korean, and other East Asian art, and beyond Native American art, sits the one-room gallery for African art. Here, most of the objects could be considered fashions, tools, or domestic objects. There is a bizarre absence of chronology, and the objects seem too similar to speak for Africa at large– as if everything on display arose from the same historical situation and from the same experimental sampling pool. Among this ad hoc assortment of characters, one would find a chest. Actually, a rather bulky jewelry box, which is immediately distinct from the precious, intimate jewelry boxes in many of the visitors’
Today’s classrooms are becoming more and more diverse with students that have disabilities and those that come from different cultures. It is important for educators to ensure that their teaching strategies are appropriate for all of the children in their classroom. When it comes to the classroom there can be many cultural challenges that educators will have to address to ensure that all students are growing and developing appropriately. Educators need to make sure that they are capable of addressing each of their

Learning is the process of gaining knowledge or skills through study, experience or teaching. It is a process that depends on experience and leads to long-term changes in the possible behaviour of an individual in a given situation, in order to achieve a goal.
Grade retention, better known as “staying back”, “being held back” or “repeating”, has been the topic of much debate within the educational system. The controversy which surrounds this long-standing issue has been reinforced by such topics as the recent endorsement of academic standards. Research indicates that “the rate of retention has increased by approximately 40% in the last 20 years with as many as 15% of all American students held back each year and 30-50% held back at least once before ninth grade” (Dawson, 1998). These discouraging statistics pose copious problems within a school system. The difficulties can be appreciated at the organizational level, as well as inside the classroom and, most
Writing a paper on the writing process is pretty hard. The writing process is different from one person to another. You come across questions like, 'What exactly is the writing process?'; and 'Must you follow one persons writing process if yours is different?'; This is where I came across the answer to my questions, write however you wish to write. If one person likes free write first and another person likes to write a draft first, let them do how they please.
