Week Four Response to Golding, McConnell, McGinley, and Rucker
Communication is an essential skill that has been identified as a distinguishing characteristic of effective leaders. It is imperative that leaders build the skills and ability to effectively communicate both verbally and with the written word, in addition, listening is an invaluable talent for any manager (DuBrin, 2013). Furthermore, leadership communication is crucial when attempting to engage employees in a commitment to change (Portoghese, I., Galetta, M., Battistelli, M., Saiani, L., Penna, L., & Allegrini, E. 2012). Moreover, listening is an often overlooked skill that is a fundamental building block for all leaders. It is obligatory that managers practice the art of listening
Meanwhile, a lot of employers rank communication skills to be a core necessity in the workplace as they desire to work with individuals have a good listening skills. By bringing together everyone in the organization to work toward a same goal, the firm positions itself towards success. The ability to communicate effectively and efficiently allows an individual to have a better understanding of the organization’s objectives, missions and vision. By working in line with what the company wants to achieve, a person could have better performance as well as better core competence within the organization. This work is part one of an ongoing communications portfolio which will be expanded upon weekly. Barrett (2011) describes leadership communication as “the controlled, purposeful transfer of meaning...” (p. 6). The following is a self-assessment (Barrett, 2011, pp. 407-411) which will help gauge my current leadership communication abilities. Each area will be answered with either excel (master of skill) , competent (acceptable but could improve) or need to develop (needs attention).
“Developing excellent communication skills is absolutely essential to effective leadership. The leader must be able to share knowledge and ideas to transmit a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others. If a leader can't get a message across clearly and motivate others to act on it, then having a message doesn't even matter."
Communication proficiencies are vital for each and every one in any professional organization, specifically for leaders and owners. Some individuals are purely talented in interpersonal skills, although those who aren't can learn and practice effective communication

Having open and honest communication with individuals and teams is another method of motivating employees. In order for employees to be engaged in achieving departmental goals they must feel as though they are appreciated and their thoughts and ideas are valued. A manager must have effective communication skills with staff to build these relationships. According to Kruse (2012), communication is critical because it forms the backbone for all other engagement efforts. It is important for managers to create a system of two-way communication and not just a method of broadcasting information as found in many organizations. In “Great Communication Secrets of Great Leaders” John Baldoni identifies ways in which communication defines leadership. Communications defines leadership by developing and reinforcing the bond of trust, affirming the organizational vision, facilitating a two-way flow or information, creating the impetus for organization effectiveness, and driving results. All of these traits of communication are important for a leader to convey. They allow him or her to inform people, involve everyone, ignite people’s imaginations, and invite participants.
Communication plays a critical role in leadership at all organization levels. However, effective communication is not an easy task, and any group of people needs to be careful with channels and modes of communication. There are old and new barriers that result in incomplete communication, miscommunication, and broken communication. Any malfunctioning in a conversation resulting from the complexity of communication has severe consequences both at individual and organizational levels.
In fact, Baldwin et al emphasizes how “communication skills are central to success” (). He reinforces the above-mentioned fruits by validating how effective communication means, “hear[ing] other people’s statements from their point of view” (Baldwin et al, 2013, p.184). They manage change by designing a plan and then communicating it to all concerned before putting the plan into action. This is done with the same strategic focus and planning that was used to develop the plan. This is an effort that is carefully coordinated and implemented change in order to not run the risk of the planned change failing. Transformational Leaders develop clear and effective strategy along with a communication plan in order to effectively manage the intended changes. (Wilson, 2014, pg. 39, 40) states that the most effective and successful leaders will meet to discuss and document their answers to the, what why, who, when, and how of change.
It is essential for business leaders to have excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills, as leaders are often a symbol of a company’s integrity and this affects not only how customers perceive the company, but also impacts the thoughts and actions of lower positioned employees. For example, a leader that speaks using improper grammar, or writes correspondence with spelling errors throughout it, could project a negative image that can be harmful to a company. Customers might conclude that the leader is incompetent and they might decide that they do not wish to purchase goods from a company that hires inept leaders. Furthermore, employees might become less apt to respect an authority that appears to be uneducated, as well as employees might feel that if the leader disregards using proper communication than it is not necessary for them to use it either. Business leaders need to know when to listen, when to talk, and how to share ideas effectively. Clear and concise communication states exactly how, who, what, and when and serves to guide, direct, protect, persuade, and to inform. Communication is essential for decreasing miscommunications and for increasing productivity, motivation, and efficiency. When someone uses effective communication, he or she is more apt to have favorable results and his or her requests will become granted more often. Furthermore, communication builds goodwill.
