Introduction Discrimination towards woman in nowadays life is like a cancer. It is attacking without us knowing and realizing about it. One of it is a child marriage. Child marriage is a serious human rights violation affecting children’s and women’s rights to health, education, equality, non-discrimination and to live free from violence and exploitation Content Marbel Van Oranjes from Girls Not Bride stated that 40 millions girl are getting married before they are 18 years old. And this big problem need to be change as it is a truly global problem that cuts across countries, cultures, religions and ethnicities. Child brides can be found in every region in the world, from the Middle East to Latin America, South Asia to Europe. As we can see
All over the globe, violence and discrimination against women and girls violates their human rights and severely compromised their perception of equality. Culture, false beliefs and ancient traditions, such as early marriage, the nuclear family, gender-based discrimination, which lead to violence against women and femicide, destroyed young girls ' mental and physical wellbeing and self-esteem by supporting the ideas that gender-based discrimination and inequality is acceptable in our societies.
Almost 60% of girls are married by 16. Women activists say up to 80 percent of marriages in poor rural areas are either forced or arranged.
Child marriage in the States is a serious problem. The current law for child marriage states that you must be at least eighteen years old to marry. However, state laws make exceptions if minors have parental consent. Due to the lack of awareness in this topic thirty-three states and two counties in the U.S. reported that between 2000-2015 there were a total of 170,363 minors that were married. Of which, six were twelve-year-olds, fifty-one were thirteen-year-olds, nine hundred eighty-five was fourteen years old. Not only is this number increasing but it is also alarming. The main reasons for child marriage are poverty, gender inequality, tradition/culture, education, and insecurity. Most of the child marriages happen in rural or backward areas of the country. The main reason for this is poverty for sure. Parents who have a daughter but don't earn as much choose this method to give them a better life. For the boys, the marriage does not take place but poverty triggers child labor. Another main reason behind this activity is gender inequality. Even today there are lots of countries that consider
Girls all over the world are forced into marriages due to financial necessity, tradition and to ensure their future. Most of these girls married are at a young age: “One third of the world’s girls are married before the age of 18 and 1 in 9 are married before the age of 15”( “Child Marriage Facts and Figures”). The young ages of those being married reveal how crucial it is to resolve this problem. When child marriage occurs the parents of the bride usually chose the groom for their daughters; and these grooms can be three times older than the young brides. Some children are brought into the world of marriage at the of 8 or sometimes less depending on their cultural views. The following can be used to help reduce the impact of early
"More than 200,000 children have been involved in a child marriage in the last fifteen years," says Chris Baynes, an author at The Independent. When the words "child marriage," are said, I used to think of a third world country. I think of someone that I thought of as "uncivilized" or as "inhumane," but many people, including me, would be shocked to know that child marriage happens right here in our "civilized" United States. On top of the fact that it generally happens here, it is completely legal in twenty-five states! The other twenty-five states have minimum ages but the loopholes that those laws have are astonishing. Many of the laws loopholes, according to Nurith Aizenman, the writer of "The Loopholes That Allow Child Marriage in the
For hundreds of years young children were married off early in life sometimes 12 years old for girls, and 14 years old for boys. So why doesn’t that happen now? This simply is because starting in the early 1900s the age “limit” as some would say started increasing. Now instead of having to be 12 or 14, a person has to be anywhere between 15 and 21 to get married. Some of the reasons why this change occurred is compulsory state schooling, child labor laws, and studies showing the negative effects of early in life marriages (Dahl).
In many societies, marriage is a celebrated institution commemorating the union between two consenting adults and the beginning of their lives together. However, this experience and celebration is different for the millions of girls around the world who are forced to wed while still children, some not even yet teenagers.
There are approximately twenty to thirty million slaves in the world today. It may not seem like it, because in America, trafficking is less of an issue than anywhere else. The average age of entry into slavery in America is fourteen to sixteen years old. Child trafficking victims, whether for labor, exploitation, or organ trafficking, come from all backgrounds, include both boys and girls. They span a wide age range from one to eighteen years old. Sex trafficking victims up to roughly twenty-five years old most often started as young as fourteen. Children are trafficked out of or into the United States from all regions of the world and represent a variety of different races, ethnic groups and religions. They may be brought to the U.S. legally
As a babysitter, I have never seen any set of parents who raise their kids the same way. Every couple is going to discipline and raise their children differently. This is why child rearing is such an interesting process. There are so many ways to raise a kid and each way might have the same or completely different outcomes. I interviewed Jennifer Stein and asked her about her disciplining practices and she explained to me how she believes it is important to make sure the child is aware of the exact thing they did wrong and that they reflect on it and apologize. When her daughter (Allison) was a baby Jennifer would discipline her child from biting her by stopping feeding her. If her daughter pinched her she would set her down to teach her if
In the United States, many children under the age of 18 have taken marital vows. A lot of whom are young girls to older men with the approval of a judge and consenting parent. Why you may ask? The minimum age requirement to get married in most states is 18, but there are couple exception which allow for a child under the age of 18 to get married. The first exception is with parental approval most states allow children 16 or 17 to be married if their parents sign the marriage certificate. Another exception is with judicial approval. With a judge approval, the marrying party can be below the age of 16. That’s crazy right picture an elementary student no older then the age of 10 getting ready to walk down the alter on her big wedding day. I don't think they should allow someone under the age of 18 marry, partly because of the fact children are not even consider adults or are able to have sex until 18 may places. so, seeing them married would be a bit contradictory. Marriage is a bond of hearts and minds, there are several problems a couple can face when marriage happens at an early stage for them.
Child brides are a little voiced problem that occur around the world. Fourteen million girls become child brides every year, a number that is increasing due to the growing populations of countries where child marriage is common (Fisher). I chose to focus on child brides specifically in Africa and the Middle East due to the high instances of child marriages in those parts of the world. In my research I also found that child brides are very common in South Asia and South America as well. In Niger, Chad, Mali, Bangladesh, Guinea, Central African Republic, Mozambique, and Nepal over half of girls are married before they turn eighteen (Fisher). This is largely due to traditional tribal practices, cultural norms, and an overall lack of education.
All over the world Female Infanticide is a cruel and sinuous act. Every child deserves a chance to live and experience life. Female Infanticide also goes against the women's right to freedom and gender equality. In a global view of Female Infanticide, Female Infanticide should be reduced before it is too late.
UNICEF defines Child Marriage as “ a formal marriage or informal union before age 18, is a reality for both boys and girls, although girls are disproportionately the most affected. Child marriage is widespread and can lead to a lifetime of disadvantage and deprivation” (Child)
According to surveys, “Turkey has one of the highest rates of juvenile marriages in the world” ( Tokyay). Also, the survey points out that, in Turkey there are 28 percent of child brides, and 41 percent of this is unofficial religious marriages. (Tokyay). To challenge with these injustice, cruelty, and oppression they have to get education because if they get education, they become independent and aware of their rights therefore, they do not have to yield man anymore. They can sue their husband, their families that commit violance or force to marry and they can defend themselves.
At that age children want to play and go to school they are not mature enough to do things such as cook, work, and pay bills. In the Middle East a man’s wife is considered his property so that means it is unlikely that anyone will enforce the ban against sexual relations with girls so young. Also the fact that women are considered the property of their husbands puts them into a vulnerable situation where they have to rely on their husbands for everything. Furthermore, an older woman would be better equipped mentally to make the choice weather or not to get married. An adult would also have a much easier time running away from an undesired marriage. Marriage is a huge commitment that should only be entered into voluntarily, which is something that a child cannot do. Therefore, Middle Eastern countries should not allow girls to get married at such a young age.
