How far is too much when sacrificing energy and time on a neglectful person? We see this scenario unfold in the novel Rescue by Anita Shreve. Peter Webster, a rookie EMT, is a prideful and optimistic person. Through his line of work, he comes across a severely injured Sheila Arsenault who has been involved in a car accident. Upon arriving to the wreckage scene, the rookie’s eye’s quickly gaze towards Sheila’s hair, “ The shock of glossy brown hair in the artificial light registered with Webster, replaced immediately by acronyms. . .” (12). Calling it nothing but love at first sight is far from wrong. Little does Webster know that the series of events following the accident will dramatically change his life. Who would 've thought that a small insignificant moment would lead to a butterfly effect in which Webster has no control over. His devotion towards spending time with the love of his life, Sheila, can be compared to a drug addiction, “He thought of Sheila as a drug that had hooked him after only one hit” (58); furthermore, it’s his only way of expressing happiness. We come to find out that Sheila’s accident was the result of a mere intoxication of alcohol. A perpetual drunk is all that Sheila is, nothing less nothing more. Because of the devotion that Webster has for Sheila, he feels to have the obligation to not only tell her, but help her eradicate the need of alcohol in her life. Together, they form a life, or at least try to, staggered with addiction and

And then… about we all poor and live in the slums” (Bambara 137).

The story that is A Sorrowful Woman seems to be a story told from the point of view of a narrator who focuses only slightly on the inner conflict of one of the main charters in the story. The character of which I am speaking is never referred to by name, instead is called she, the woman, mommy, and wife throughout the entire story which lends credence to the conclusion of the viewpoint as being told from the outside. The first indication that the focus of the story will be not of a warm and loving nature is the line “The sight of them made her so sad and sick she did not want to see them again”(1). This is where a hypothesis can begin to be formed as to who the antagonist of the story is, bearing the statement above in

The narrator’s father; however, does not show the same compassion for the animals as his son. He is adamant about keeping the horses off of his land and warns his son that he will shoot to first to intrude. The narrator views his father in a very austere manner.
She struggled with cognitive dissonance to an extent that at times I don’t even think she thought she was harming herself. She knew that her drinking problem was pushing her family away from her yet she continued to do it. What is even worse is that doctors told her that her alcoholism was killing her and if she didn’t stop she wouldn’t have much longer to live, but did she change anything? No, she felt like she needed alcohol to endure a regular day and if she quit, consequently, she wouldn’t be emotionally strong enough to be able to carry on with her life any longer. This concept would be exceptionally tough to help her overcome, it’s a tricky issue as the person does know that it’s hurting them yet they continue to engage in that
