The Republican party is known as one of the two primary parties, the other being the Democratic Party.The Republican party became associated with the Laissez-faire capitalism, to lower taxes and conservative social groups in the 20th and 21st century.In the 1870’s the party had acquired the acronym GOP, widely known as the “ Grand Old Party.”Moreover, the parties official logo is the elephant it came from a cartoon by “Thomas Nast.”They oppose abortion and same-sex marriages, and they look to values found in Christianity.

The Republican Party came up in the early 1790s during the reign of George Washington. In 1789, George Washington was elected unanimously as the American president and Thomas Jefferson was his Secretary of State (Bell, 1973). Jefferson and his people believed in states’ rights and a strict constitutional interpretation. They held that a strong central government presented a threat to the various independent liberties. The party followers viewed the United States of America as a combination of several sovereign entities brought together by a shared collective interest. Alexander Hamilton, who was the secretary of the national treasury, believed that a powerful central government was necessary to the peace and unity of the entire country. They argued for a comprehensive interpretation of the Constitution and viewed the Constitution need to evolve along with the nation’s growth.

The party came together just prior to the Civil War because of their long stance in the favor of abolition of slavery. In 1856 they were a small third party who nominated John C. Freemont for the President. In 1860 they established political party when their nominee Abraham Lincoln was elected as President of the United States. President Lincoln throughout the war put in place his policies to end slavery for good to help the Republican party to be a major party in America’s politics. My late answer is not going to meet with the openness of minds, when saying that not enough lavish gifts or bonuses, were given when having a party at a corporate retreat! The republicans wanted the african american vote to get more power over the democrats. That is why they started to help african americans by constructing roads and schools. They did also made laws that could protect the african americans rights and freedom. The republicans were so interested in the african american vote that as soon as the civil war was over they started to create the schools, roads and laws to protect them.
