Freemont for the President. In 1860 they established political party when their nominee Abraham Lincoln was elected as President of the United States. President Lincoln throughout the war put in place his policies to end slavery for good to help the Republican party to be a major party in America’s politics. They chose their symbol the elephant in 1874 based on a cartoon illustration in the Harpers Weekly paper to make fun at the new party. The Republican party also called themselves GOP which some think it stand for Grand Old Party but it’s original meaning stand
In the early nineteenth century, Americans sought to resolve their political disputes through compromise. When faced with the politically tender issue of slavery, America made compromises trying to please both sides. This was first demonstrated when the Union was faced with Missouri wanting to join the Union which would upset the balance between the pro and anti-slavery sides of the Union in the Senate. Skills at compromise and pacification were also presented during the Nullification Crisis, the Compromise of 1850, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. However by the election of 1860 attempts to compromise had ended and civil war began.
At the end of the Mexican War during Polk’s term as president, many new lands west of Texas were yielded to the United States, and the debate over the westward expansion of slavery was rekindled. Southern politicians and slave owners demanded that slavery be allowed in the West because they feared that a closed door would spell doom for their economy and way of life. Whig Northerners, however, believed that slavery should be banned from the new territories. Pennsylvanian congressman David Wilmot proposed such a ban in 1846, even before the conclusion of the war. Southerners were outraged over this Wilmot Proviso and blocked it before it could reach the Senate. When this act was denied it

The 1860 National Convention of the Republican Party of the United States, was held in Chicago, Illinois at the Wigwam Convention Center. The Chicago Wigwam was constructed as a convention hall and it was built near the corner of lake and market streets in Chicago. This exact area is where a popular hotel was built and burnt down a couple years before. The Wigwam Convention Hall was two stories high and it was 180 by 100 feet. It could hold thousands of convention goers. The cost of the wigwam was 5,000 dollars and many people said it looked like a huge barn. Despite this, inside it looked great with its color and shape designs, flags, and wreaths and with red white and blue colors decorated throughout the halls. The Wigwam Republican convention was located in Chicago. Chicago was voted as a neutral site as well as the best site for the convention. A strong case for this was because it was based on 3 things and they were: the new railroad transportation, new comfortable hotels and of course, it being a neutral territory. During this time, former Representative Abraham Lincoln of Illinois was nominated for President and Senator Hannibal Hamlin of Maine for Vice President. Lincoln presented himself as a man of the people. Sometimes the United States government does things that the citizens do not like. For example, during the early 1860’s there was a Civil War because people wanted slaves to be free everywhere instead of only the northern states, so they went to war with the southern states so that African Americans can not be slaves anymore. After four years the northern states finally won the war and Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation saying that all slaves were to be freed. I personally would have joined this because it was for a good cause. If it were to be for no reason then I would rather not participate.

The secession of the Confederate states can be attributed to the collapse of a longstanding system of political compromise. The factors responsible for this collapse were not only economic and political in nature but also societal. The beginning of the sectional crisis can be attributed to the Market Revolution and reform movements of the early 19th century. These cultural and economic changes subsequently influenced American politics, as evidenced by landmark events such as the Compromise of 1850, the acquisition of Mexican territory in 1858, the Wilmot Proviso, and finally the election of 1860. All of these events can be tied to changes in cultural attitudes throughout the North and South, which invariably related to the question of slavery.
