The party came together just prior to the Civil War because of their long stance in the favor of abolition of slavery. In 1856 they were a small third party who nominated John C. Freemont for the President. In 1860 they established political party when their nominee Abraham Lincoln was elected as President of the United States. President Lincoln throughout the war put in place his policies to end slavery for good to help the Republican party to be a major party in America’s politics. They chose their symbol the elephant in 1874 based on a cartoon illustration in the Harpers Weekly paper to make fun at the new party. The Republican party also called themselves GOP which some think it stand for Grand Old Party but it’s original meaning stand
