The National Health Service was founded on the 5th July 1948. Winston Churchill was the prime minister at the time .The government decided to commission a report, addressing the ways in which Britain should be rebuilt after the Second World War had ended. The Beveridge report of 1942 (written by William Beveridge) identified five main points that needed to be addressed. These were Want (addressed poverty) disease (the lack of healthcare) ignorance (no education) squalor (represented the lack of housing) and idleness (unemployment). A Lot of politicians were confident that Winston Churchill would lead the conservatives to success in the general election. So even though benefits were introduced they were small and deliberately done in this way so that people still helped themselves. The government was not about to make things too easy for people. The main reaction to these reforms was that it was better than nothing. RECENT REFORMS TO OUR NHS SERVICE There are four main areas of political debate surrounding the reform of the NHS today *Budget *Competition *Pace of change *Bureaucracy Some of the key arguments that exist in today’s NHS are how it is organised and managed, and how it is to be funded. Should the government pay for it? Should the taxpayers pay for it? Or should it be privately run? Another key aspect is how we should balance the demands of the patients, staff and taxpayers, along with their expectations of the services that should be provided. We need to make sure that resources given are given to where they are most needed and that money is being spent correctly and not wasted. Today’s changes to the NHS have been called the most radical in the whole of the 60 years that it’s been in existence. In today’s NHS charities and private firms are now involved much more widely, in areas such as mental health and end of life care. Although they do have a much smaller role in hospital setting than they used to have. One of the biggest changes is that doctors now have budgets from which they buy healthcare, it could be from NHS trusts or private sectors, the new scheme is called GP
