Religion In Western Europe During The Middle Ages

There was one main religion in Western Europe during the Middle Ages. This religion was Roman Catholic Christianity. It was both unifying and separating in some ways. Unlike now, religion served various functions, and was the main cultural aspect in people's lives. The Christian patriarch was more powerful than European kings, and wealthier. In the name of religion, wars were fought and people were executed. On the other hand, the church had positive effects on the society as it provided basic social services, improved architectural styles, supported scientific research in some areas, and founded the first universities. l When the Romans left Europe, they left a disorganised territory with many rivalling tribes and decreasing culture. When tribal lords took on Christianity, however, religion became a unifying force among those Germanic tribes . This was possible because the Church was the only institution that had developed a useful bureaucracy. Later on, the tribes changed into small kingdoms. The Pope, as the head of the Catholic Church, became eventually more powerful than any of the kings and even had the right to appoint kings. Church law was executed all over Europe. The Great Schism divided the Christian world into the Roman Catholic Church in Western Europe and the Greek Orthodox Church in Eastern Europe and the Near East. From then on, the influence of the Pope ended at the borders of the Byzantine empire. The Church also increased hostility between Christians and Muslims. The Crusades, and the war against the invading Muslims in Spain, were examples of this fight to keep Europe free of Islam.
