Dear John Steinbeck, After reading your novel, Of Mice and Men I have begun to realize how important friendships are growing up. For me it’s very essential to have a few valuable friendships, like Lennie and George. I noticed that in your novel Lennie and George had a strong unconditional bond. The way they stuck by each other through thick and thin was inspiring. It would be a dream of anyone’s to have a an everlasting friendship like that. Also the unflattering portrayal of women struck me as a discourtesy, but in the context of this novel and time period, this depiction of women seems suitable but yet not respectful. Mainly in your novel you talked about the brotherhood bond between Lennie and George but to me I was able to relate that …show more content…
The part when George and Lennie got kicked off their Job due to Lennie’s foolish choice to touch a woman’s soft dress made me wonder. If Lennie only touched the dress due to it’s enticing softness was this really his fault at all? If not Lennie’s fault then whos, the woman’s fault or by default, your shortcoming of portraying woman in this novel as more of a sexual, unflattering characterization. Not by any means am I insulting your work, I thank you for it. The way you demonstrated how most men see women as unequal only made me want to succeed and to gain more self pride. I am a highschool student, I am also a girl and in highschool you don’t find too many willingly respectful guys who want to look at us girls the same as them. Many of the guys from my school like to think of girls as inferior, and your novel supports just that. If you men think us girls are to blame for all of your discourteousness then you’re wrong. When Lennie was accused of rape because he touched that womens dress, I thought to myself if that were me I would not have reacted the same way she did. Now maybe not every woman would have been okay with that but not by any means is what Lennie did or was said to have done considered rape, well not by today’s standards anyway. If a woman were to come onto a guy just like Curley’s
Over the course of the novella, George’s attitude towards Lennie changes from impatience, controlling, to sympathy.
Chuck Palahnick once said, “If death meant just leaving the stage long enough to change costume and come back as a new character... Would you slow down? Or speed up?” What happens in the realistic fiction book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is similar to what was said. George makes a decision to speed up Lennie’s death or let it be slow and brutal.
How far would you go to save your friend from themselves. In the novella of mine and men by John Steinbeck. George and Lennie are working to get a nice house and live off the land. To guys George and Lennie work a farm to get the money to buy a house, but Lennie gets into trouble when he accidentally kills curley's wife. Which forced Lennie to kill George. Some of the relationships in the novella are George and Lennie, candy and George, and candy and his dog.
“Everything you say and do is having an impact on others” (Barry Manilow Quotes). George has been impacting Lennie’s life ever since they were young, and he bossed him around. George tells Lennie what to do before they left to go to work at the ranch to make sure Lennie doesn’t do anything that could ruin their chances of achieving their dream, which later they added Candy to their group to get more money and help to make it happen. In the end, Lennie killed Curley’s wife, so George had to kill him to prevent him from suffering and because he believed that their dream was never going to happen due to the accident. George’s dream of being his own boss with his own farm impacts Lennie, Candy, and Curley’s wife both positively and negatively by
George and Lennie are the main characters in the novel which made every decision they made affect other characters in the novel. George had made many decisions in the novel and most of his decisions had affected other characters in a positive way, meanwhile Lennies decisions affected other characters in a negative way. Lennie did not have many decisions in the novel, but when he made a decision George was held responsible. Lennie made many wrong decisions because he was not smart and this is why George had to babysit Lennie at all time.
Good friendships make life easier. Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, is about two men, George and Lennie, who go on various journeys in order to get a job. Although George would consider Lennie to be his closest friend, he ultimately ends up shooting and killing Lennie. George did this, not out of hatred, but rather out of protection. A good friend will always want what is best for one another. Steinbeck uses his protagonists’ friendship in order to show that true friendship can help make any of life’s hardships less difficult.
Lennie would not get in trouble again or forget what he has to do. For
What if one of your bestest friend or even your own sibling had a mental issue that would be really bad. They would have to go live in a hospital. What would you do? Would you try to keep them with you or would you let them go to the hospital. Well in the 1930’s if you were sick, then you had to go to a hospital, but at this hospital you either died or got more sick. But both were really bad and you could never see your family again. In the book Of mice and men George was trying to protect Lennie by not letting him go to the hospital. He would help him get a job and he would protect Lennie. In the novel, “Of Mice and Men”, by John Steinbeck, the main focus is on George and Lennie. These two gentlemen have a bond like no other. George is skinny, short, and a little older, but Lennie is tall, big, and a little younger than George. These two workmen travel together, because Lennie’s aunt asked george to take care of him. Lennie’s Aunt Clara asked George to take him, because Lennie is mentally challenged, and forgetful. At times George would get so mad at Lennie, for making them have to go from ranch to ranch. During their gallivant to different ranches, Lennie was unaware of his own strength. Although, they meet others along the way. Thus, Lennie and George were left with each other on their journey, though it was not always pleasant.
" Of Mice and Men " by John Steinbeck is a novel involving two extremely different main characters. George is a reasonably intelligent, hardworking ranchman. Lennie on the other hand always manages to find trouble. He is equally as hardworking and honest as George but his simple childlike mind always finds him trouble wherever he goes. However they have one thing that unites the two of them as close as any bond can. This is that they both share the same dream of owning their own ranch and after many hard working years, moving from ranch to ranch, living in complete poverty and working for next to nothing they finally try to achieve this life long dream.
Lennie and George gain from each other friendship and a different way of thinking. While the
Thesis: George and lennie have a true friendship because they both care for each other very deeply and both look out for each other no matter what … there almost like brothers kinda if you really think about it .
In conclusion, we see that Steinbeck uses various techniques to portray the relationship between George and Lennie. But the main method is the idea of George being like a parent to
Friendship is the strongest relationship two people can have. John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men,” for example, is about two men who go around California looking for jobs during the Great Depression. The camaraderie between the two main characters, George and Lennie, stands out particularly. Their friendship is similar to that of a parent and a child. George being the parent and taking care of Lennie by keeping him out of trouble; and Lennie being the child, ignorant of the world around him and simple-minded. In the case of John Steinbeck’s classic novella, the friendship of the two men produces risks for both; however, the emotional and physical benefits far outweigh the risks.
In the novella Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck, the relationship between Lennie Small and George Milton is complex. Lennie and George are two companions who look for work and brave the hardships of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression together. Although Lennie and George are both grown men, their relationship resembles more of a child and a single parent, or a boy and his dog. Lennie is portrayed as animalistic and childish through his behavior and Steinbeck’s comparisons. This reveals the crucial power dynamic in George and Lennie’s relationship.
