Chuck Palahnick once said, “If death meant just leaving the stage long enough to change costume and come back as a new character...Would you slow down? Or speed up?” What happens in the realistic fiction book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is similar to what was said. George makes a decision to speed up Lennie’s death or let it be slow and brutal. In this book, friends are the only thing that one may need. Sadly at the end George looses a friend that he had to kill for him to have a more pleasant death. To one person, George did the wrong thing by killing Lennie, while others agreed to why George kills Lennie. George was under pressure after Lennie killed Curley’s wife, and with all the threats that came from Curley’s mouth. George did the …show more content…
Throughout the whole book Lennie destroys many things mindlessly with out even thinking. Some of the things include killing many mice by crushing their skull, when he was only trying to pet them. Also, when Lennie was getting beat up by Curley, Lennie grabs his fist and he crushes it. Further on, after Lennie kills Curley’s wife, he can only think about not being aloud to tend the rabbits, not what he had just done. Before he had killed Curley’s wife, Lennie was sad and disappointed with himself, because he killed his pup. Curley’s wife came by to talk and to comfort Lennie, but it takes a horrible turn, “ ‘Don’t you go yellin’,’ he said, and he shook her; and her body flopped like a fish. And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck” (Steinbeck 91). Lennie was in a panic of the thought of not being aloud to tend the rabbits, mixed in with Curley’s wife screaming to get Lennie away from her. George said if he does something bad he can’t tend the rabbits, which happens to be all that Lennie dreams of. Lennie was told to stay away from Curley’s wife, and the one time when they are alone Lennie killed her. Lennie, with his disabilities, at that time period, is a constant risk of killing another life. Also, when the type of person Curley is that want to chase you down to have the most painful death, there isn’t anything else out there except to shoot him in the …show more content…
Most people would take a quick and painless death over a slow, and brutal death. In this case, Curley can kill Lennie by shooting him in the guts, which is a brutal agonizing death. On the other hand, George can be the one who shoos Lennie in the head, which causes no pain, and for it to be really quick. When George found out what Lennie had done, he was devastated, and then coming from Curley’s mouth was, “ ‘I’m gonna shoot the guts outta that big bastard myself,’ “(Steinbeck 98). With all of the craziness being brought to the actions of Lennie shocked him. When Curley said he is going to shoot the guts out of Lennie, George was shocked and could only think of one solution. With the way that Curley will kill Lennie, Lennie will be scared, hurt, and wondering about what will happen. Luckily, George was there to talk to him and make him excited and joyful, before Lennie was shot in the
Kill Him With Kindness As Lennie turned his head, boom, he was dead. In the book Of Mice of Men written by John Steinbeck, George and Lennie were two characters that went for a new job after an unexpected experience in a town called Weed. With this new job came many new characters and many new experiences for both of the characters. Towards the end Lennie ended up killing a character's: Curley’s wife.
George and Lennie were best friends for a long time, more like brothers. Lennie is about as bright as a 2 watt bulb, so George couldn’t really get mad at him when he accidently killed Curley’s wife while feeling the softness of her hair. “…’I ain’t mad. I never been mad, an’ I ain’t now. That’s a thing I want ya to know’”. The two had planned a future together—a future in their own dream ranch, a ranch where no trouble would ever bother them. “’You…an’ me. Ever’body gonna be nice to you. Ain’t gonna be no more trouble. Nobody gonna hurt nobody nor steal from ‘em’”. Then after he tells him about the rabbits that Lennie is so fond of, he shoots him in the back of the head where he knows it will not hurt him, and Lennie will not know what hit him. This is the peaceful alternative to what Curley had in store for him. Curley's exact words were "shoot the bastard right in the guts." George's euthanizing of Lennie makes the mentally incompetent Lennie die with dignity. Had Curley gotten to Lennie first, Lennie would have suffered. This shows you how much George cares for Lennie, no matter what he does or the crimes he commits. He’d always be there to help Lennie get right back up to his feet, make him forget all his worries, and move on like nothing happened. I strongly believe George was the right person to kill Lennie, and made the right decision in doing so, rather than to let him suffer in the hands of Curley.
First here are the events leading up to lennie’s untimely death. Well lennie and george find a ranch but there is tension between curley and lennie because of his size. One day curley's wife and lennie are in the barn alone and lennie accidentally broke her neck killing her so lennie runs off. Curley sets out to find lennie and this is when george killed lennie. You might be saying the events don’t make it right. Well curley would have killed lennie one way or another.
The reason why it was better for George to have shot Lennie instead of Curley was that George got to give Lennie a happy last memory with both of them just talking about the ranch and tending the rabbits. George and Lennie were best friends and practically family, so why
I’m arguing why George should have killed Lennie in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.Curley was going to make Lennie’s death painful anyways. Curley was mad about his hand and losing his wife so he thought he would shoot Lennie.”Ill shoot him in the guts”(Steinbeck).Lennie was going to die either way so why not just get it over with.George should have shot Lennie because he may be slower but being slower does not get you out of murder.George should have killed Lennie when he saw Curley’s wife’s dead body because he got nervous and scared for him because George knew what the guys were going to do to him .”I know what I have to do” (Steinbeck) I think the quote proves my point because George knows he is going to have to kill Lennie.Lennie
At the end of the book Of Mice and Men Lennie accidentally broke Curley's wife's neck. Afterwards George had to come up with a decision to let Lennie die happily or let Curly torture him. George made the right decision on killing Lennie because of the things that could happen to Lennie and George. First, If Lennie was not killed by George than he would have to go threw with terrible torture with Curly. Second, George would be a lot better off without Lennie always getting them fired and getting in trouble. Finally george let him die happily. Some people think that george made the wrong decision because Lennie did not mean to kill Curley’s wife but they are wrong because Lennie could have done more terrible things and he would not be able to help it.
If George decided against killing Lennie, Curley would have shot the giant instead. Curley’s hate for Lennie
So it is clear that George had to kill Lennie so Curley couldn't do anything to him. If George didn't kill Lennie then the state would have sent him to the insane asylum. ¨An' s'pose they lock him up an' strap him down and put him in a cage. That ain't no good, George¨(Steinbeck 97).
Lennie was doing it on accident because Lennie stated in the book that Lennie wanted her to stop screaming by saying “Oh! Please don’t do none of that? George gonna say that I done a bad thing I won’t get to tend the rabbits”(Steinbeck 91). This shows that Lennie did not want to cause any harm to Curley's wife Lennie just did not want to get in trouble so Lennie tried to keep her quiet. This shows that George should not be punished for killing Lennie because Lennie did it on
Curley is a very pugnacious guy and loves to starts fights especially with big guys like Lennie. Curley never liked Lennie after he met him the first day George and Lennie worked on the farm. Curley wanted revenge on Lennie after the incident with the crushing of his hand. When Curley found out Lennie was responsible for his wife’s death, he wasn’t going to let him get away unharmed. Because George knew that Curley was planning on killing Lennie, he wanted to spare Lennie the pain of being killed or tortured by Curley and his mob of
‘Of Mice and Men’ is an excellent example of foreshadowing because John Steinbeck very intricately foreshadowed the most pivotal events in the book, i.e; The Death of Curley’s Wife and The Mercy Killing of Lennie. The following paragraphs will, firstly, describe how Steinbeck foreshadowed the Death of Curley’s Wife, and secondly, describe how he foreshadowed the killing of Lennie Small. Curley’s Wife’s death is foreshadowed multiple times in the book. To start off when the character is introduced ‘She had full rouged lips…
Lennie is an innocent, unknowing of what's going on around him type of person. All he really knows is that he likes things that feel soft and that is what ends up getting him kill. He is so focused on not having George mad at him and not letting him tend to the rabbits that he accidentally kills Curley's wife. “"Don't you go yellin'," he said, and he shook her; and her body flopped like a fish. And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck.”(xx) Lennie just killed Curley's wife and he has done a lot of bad things but never murdered someone. This is the last straw for George and when he hunts him down in the woods, he kills Lennie because he is at a loss of hope for Lennie. Lennie has a tendency to kill small animals by accident and
Once George finds him first, he decides it would be best if Lennie died, and so he shoots him in the back of the head where he will feel no pain. George and Lennie being the best of friends, it is surprising George decides to kill his mate. In a way, it makes sense. If the others were to catch Lennie first, then Curley would have most likely tortured or killed Lennie in a very painful way. During all this, George would have to watch without being able to do anything. Lennie made the mistake, and he will have to pay for it no matter what. The best way to quickly end it is to kill him painlessly when he is happy. This stops their goal of living together in a small house. George will either have to complete that dream himself or choose another companion. Either way, it is a loss for George and for Lennie. In a way, this may be the best for George. Now he doesn’t have to deal with a person who is constantly messing up and is hard to deal with. This act of deciding to kill Lennie is an epiphany. This is because, before this, George and Lennie were really close, but after, George had to go through the process of deciding to kill Lennie. The moment when George realizes that the best situation for his friend is for George to kill him is harsh. George did the best for Lennie, and that is what
In closing, while Lennie’s death upset many Of Mice and Men readers, it was inevitable to happen. George made the right choice when mercifully putting Lennie to rest, for Lennie was not bright, made terrible mistakes, and he wouldn’t have survived through any other probability. Lennie lived a longer life than expected in the society they took place
By killing Lennie in John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice And Men, George protected himself, prevented unnecessary harm from coming to Lennie, and ultimately, he let Lennie die happy.
