Reflective Essay: Why Being A Writer Is So Scary

I’m not a notable writer, nor have I really wanted to join the writing industry. However, I have been interested in other people’s writing. From their deep meanings, content, and different formats/styles. It’s a wondrous creation made from within our imagination and experiences. It has inspired me to write too. I’ve been writing most of my life that it has become a necessity. And now from my past experiences with writing, I try my best to improve my skills as a writer for the future.

My writing essays represent a timeline of improvement , from my first essay to my last essay I’ve noticed my growth as a writer. It was not until later on the semester that I realized that I lacked substantial academic vocabulary and had ongoing run on sentences, grammatical errors. My word choice was really repetitive with the constant use certain words. I have progressed where I have expanded my ability to use clear description and make my technical information clear. For example when writing essay 2 and 3 having to insert figures helped me portray my argument much more clearly. When addressing the figures in my writing they had become much more clear. Attached is my final project, a cumulative portfolio documenting my growth as a student and as a writer through out English 102. My English portfolio includes revised versions of my research paper, “Global Warming: Hot Topic” and essay “Blueprint Solution for the Poor,” along with the original drafts complete with red ink corrections. In addition, I am also providing this reflection essay demonstrating what I have learned this semester and how I have enhanced my original drafts. English 102 has taught me a number of things and has improved my writing skills. There are many things I have struggled with throughout the semester, but regardless, I have overcome most of my obstacles. Most of all, I have learned how to distinguish good sources from bad sources, how to better use citations, and how to properly develop a thesis.

The writing process has always been a challenge for me. Especially if it has a due date. In the past, I have always procrastinated the process and that never ended well. I knew something had to be done and I needed to come up with ways to make writing a little easier. So, I sat down and I started to look at writing in smaller steps. I started to plan how I was going to finish a paper without getting so anxious and overwhelmed. This process has helped me a lot along the way and I am going to share my process with you.

This year has been a blast! There were so many things that just cried out me, and the projects were so much fun! I know I have grown as a writer by starting to have less and less edits on my paper. Making my blog helped me grow as a writer because it made me want to work harder. I wanted to work harder because I knew people would see my work. Sacred writing time has helped me grow as a writer because the time was helpful in the sense that I got some of my best ideas in just 5 minutes. As I continue through my development as a writer, I acquire more and more skills that can make my composition interesting, easy to follow, and strong in its presentation of an argument. In English 102 this semester, I was able to grow my skills, especially in terms of conducting and reporting research, citing that research, and having an organization that makes my writing easy to follow and presents my argument clearly and succinctly.

First, thank you for your honesty and your bravery in posting this. As a few other posts in this course seem to attest, many people are uncomfortable with posting something potentially negative, or even positive, from their lives and their history and would instead either spurn off the idea and topic of the assignment, or acknowledge a lack of interest and create a false narrative. You did neither.

Over the course of this semester, I have improved as a writer. At the beginning, I would like to think I was fairly decent, but I didn’t have much experience in anything but English and the occasional history papers. This year was difficult, as it forced me to learn new ways of writing. As I got more comfortable, I clearly improved, with my writing and content improving. Essays like the Prairie Meadows scholarship and annotated bibliography were remarkably different than what I was used to, and I benefited from writing them. The beginning of this year, I wasn’t incredibly concerned with my sentence structure or the impact of the words I used. As I learned and wrote more, my sentences got more complex and I -for the most part- stopped using

Growing up, I always told myself that I hated writing. Every time I was told I had to do an essay, it felt as if my teacher had wrapped a 50 pound bag of bricks around my neck and I couldn’t take it off until I finished the assignment. And it wasn’t until 12th grade that I started to feel that weight begin to lift. Going into my senior year of high school, I had a lot of personal issues that I was dealing with. My situation was mentally draining and I wasn’t functioning how I used to due to my issues. This caused me to fall behind in my classes and mentally check out of school in a sense. As a way to try and cope with what I was going through, I decided to try channeling my pain into something positive by writing song lyrics and recording my thoughts in a journal. In doing so, I found myself enjoying writing in a way that I never have before, and never thought I would. Writing down all my emotions and expressing them in a form of art was healing for me. When I was just a very small child, I was sending to take the writing classes every weekend. Later on, my mom would talk to my teacher to ask my every writing score and to ask if I have any improvements. Even when I grew up, the writing score still took up one quarter of whole Chinese Exam. I am pretty curious how could my writing still be not so good after all these years’ practicing. However, the reality is that I am not a good writer. When turns to English writing, besides the different syntax, the old problems keep bothering me. I always write what I thought, which is good. This term was very fruitful and educational; not only were we given the chance to tackle about certain issues, but we also got to read some articles and essays written by other people to serve as inspiration to write our own. This term, I also realized how essential it is to have people around you throughout the duration of your writing period. I realized how much people can manipulate the way you write in a positive way.
