Reflective practice is an essential skill that can be used in both professional and personal growth for lifelong learning (Howatson-Jones, 2016). Reflective practice can be used to critically analyze an event that has occurred and involves " thoughtfully taking into consideration one's own experiences and applying knowledge to practice" (Schon,1987). Reflective practice is especially useful in the healthcare field, and in particular as an Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant, as it can be used to analyze daily interactions with patients and through reflection, one can constantly improve. This essay will explore the benefits of reflective practice, potential barriers in reflective practice as well as the consequences of not being reflective practice and how reflective practice has helped me in my own life. Reflective practice is beneficial for both professional and personal growth for several reasons. In particular, reflective practice allows you to learn from past experiences to gain a deeper understanding of how to work in your practice and in your personal life, thus leading to greater effectiveness as a health care provider (Mann, Gordon,& MacLeod, 2009). Furthermore, by reflecting on past experiences, reflective practice leads to better self awareness and constant self-assessment and which can lead to a shift in perspective (Smith & Trede, 2013). Reflective practice in nursing is the process where we examine our nursing ability’s and practice in order to critically think and analyze the way we work and think about the views of others in our practice, what we could have done and we could have achieved a greater result by doing this also allows us as nurses to include best practice and use our own judgment in patient care to show the factors that either aid and hinder nurse to patient relationship. (Lowenstein, Bradshaw and Fuszard, 2001) described reflecting in nursing practice “the nurse must first come to understand what he or she defines as ideal practice”.
Experience is sometimes regarded as the best teacher. Many things can be learned in a classroom and by formal academic study, but many cannot. The idea of reflective practice is not only to see what happened, but to see the situation through new eyes, eyes that can help in personal growth and to develop ways to respond differently in the future.

Reflective practice is a tool used to evaluate ones opinion, thoughts and emotions. It “forms the basis of deep learning from past experiences” (Tsingo, 2014). It builds on critical thinking and problem solving. How I may choose use this in my future career as a radiation therapist is a means for debriefing, continued learning and managing my emotions. Ensuring I am mindful of myself. I hope to improve my understanding and obtain new perspectives by doing so. In the past, I have kept reflective journal entries as a mandatory assessment. I have discovered that it extended my understanding of new topics and ideas. I’ve noted reflective tools are a great way to addresses strengths and weaknesses. In short, it encourages active learning and proactivity by analysing a situation.
