Suicide Prevention Week Keynote Event: A Call For Further Action
Three people in my life have completed suicide; my uncle, my mom’s late fiance, and my step brother on my dad’s side, within four years of each other. I’ve witnessed each parental figure in my life become compromised by grief and the inevitable pain accompanying it, and I’ve seen the way depression can plague someone so deeply, even without the ending of suicide. The prevalence and growing numbers of deaths by suicide calls for a revised manner of education on all mental illnesses and the preventative measures one can take to reduce risk. Initially, when I heard of the Suicide Prevention Week Keynote event with Jamie Tworkowski (founder of ‘To Write Love On Her Arms’) I was thrilled. Hosting such an event on a college campus, presenting to a population greatly affected by mental illness, is demonstrative of the steps that should be taken toward raising awareness. Any opportunity for a comprehensive view on mental health and its significance is one to be taken advantage of. However, as the night proceeded, I did take note of several things that would improve the layout of any future events, as well as further deepen an individual’s comprehension of mental illness. The event as a whole did indeed give insight on the importance of asking for help, however the lack of structure prevented the audience from receiving a truly informative view on the issue. Prior to the event I had expected that Tworkowski was to
This past September, University of Miami staff, students and community came together to participate in spreading suicide awareness by taking part in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s “Walk out of the Darkness.” According to the University of Miami’s webpage, with more than 39,500 lives lost to suicide this year, this walk is relevant to thousands of people in the University of Miami’s community and it’s clear that UM is eager to get the word

I hear my best friend heavily breathing on the other end of the line. “I want to do it, Itzell, I want to do it so badly,” she brings herself to say, breaking through tears. My best friend of 7 years wanted to commit suicide. As I had no experience nor knowledge as to how I could appropriately comfort her in her darkest moment, I felt powerless. It was at this instant that introduced depression’s burden into my life. I have been, since then, inspired to enlighten others on the subject as I realized how little mental illness awareness was available within my own community. For this reason, I urged my group members at Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz’s Future Physician Leaders program to assist me in delivering a clear public service announcement about
The experiment that was conducted was assess whether ethnicity is associated with suicide attempts across particular groups. A cross-sectional study was used to obtain the information on suicide attempt and suicidal completion. Interview was conducted to all participants to collect ethnicity and the structured interview for DSM-IV was used for the diagnosis of our patient. Patients were categorized in two groups: attempters if they attempt at least once during their life and non-attempters if they never attempt suicide during their life. At least ten different cohorts such as age, gender, diagnosis, duration of illness and a history of alcohol or substance abuse were used. Also the patients were separated by bipolar and schizophrenia disorders.

Have you ever been through a tough situation and felt like there was no solution? Many people do and unfortunately many people also solve their solution by ending their life. In fact, every 13 minutes, someone commits suicide in the U.S (http://www.save.org/). Whether your friends or acquaintances, chances are you will know someone who has committed suicide. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. Urban Meyer, current coach of the Ohio State football team, once stated, “Are you going to be the problem or the solution?” An organization known as the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) has decided they will be the solution to suicide.
Imagine in a place where everyone that you knew all displayed depression and everyone lead to giving up. And you were the only one that saw the world as a beautiful place. How would you help others in need? There would be no one trying to help one another and you were the only one that wanted to help everyone else. What if everyone you knew were getting hurt all the time and were always fighting for no real reason what would you say to try to help them get back on their feet? If you were the one that everybody dependent on what would you tell them to try to solve their problems? Most people don’t know what to do in these sorts of situations. Therefore they look for help or stay in their comfort zone and stay quite as long as they can or solve their own problems. The government has all the power in the United States it is only right that they should spend money on programs for people that may suffer from depression or suicidal thoughts.
Some things I have learned about the act was that it's not alright to assist suicide from a help of a doctor because if assist suicide was legal some people would abuse it's power I would say assist suicide should be allowed for some patients because if they can't talk, walk, or do anything on their own then they should be allowed to make that final decision to assist suicide. For example, Robert Latimer killed his daughter using carbon monoxide because his daughter was always in pain from cerebral palsy. This topic is sensitive because it's about people making the decision to kill themselves. Also, this topic could be sensitive because people could get really emotionally because maybe someone in their family have committed suicide, which could
A death that is caused by self-inflicted injurious behavior, with the intent to die, is known as suicide (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2015). Whereas, a suicide attempt is a non-fatal, self-inflicted, and potentially injurious behavior, with the intent to die. Suicide ideation is the considering, thinking about, or the planning of suicide (CDC, 2015).
Psychological assessment provides counsellors with an objective point of view, meaning that therapist bias will be minimized. According to Briere and Scott (2015), structured interviews are designed to help counsellors avoid overlooking symptoms or inadequately assessing a client, whereas the use of unstructured interviews may cause the counsellor to miss crucial information as there are no guidelines to follow. A structured interview will be used to ensure that no aspects of Ms. Wuornos' case are overlooked.
SEPTEMBER IS SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH – DID YOU KNOW? Some suicides are planned in advance but the majority of suicides and attempts occur within an hour of a crisis and are impulsive reactions to stress. Numerous studies indicate that while easy access to a lethal method (means) of death reduces the likelihood of survival, limiting access to lethal methods can be lifesaving. Firearms are the most lethal and common method of suicide across both U.S. military and civilian populations. Learn more about Navy's guidance for reducing access to lethal means through voluntary storage of privately owned firearms in NAVADMIN 263/14. In the United States, the rate of suicide has kept on ascending subsequent to the 1970s. More beyond words suicide than from crime in North America. For my critical reflection I attended the suicide prevention presentation with keynote speaker Jamie Tworkowski. Prior to attending this event, I wasn’t very excited. I thought that it would be a boring lecture where someone stood up and talked about suicide. I didn’t think it would tell me something I didn’t already know. It began with the discussion of Jamie’s organization called To Write Love on Her Arms and how it started with his desire to help a friend who was struggling with addiction and self harm and share her story. Her story first appeared on myspace and quickly after the page received thousands of comments and responses, Jamie realized that this is an issue that reaches everybody. Today, the organization has flourished into a
An array of pictures of young girls with anorexia pop up when users search, “Thinspiration”, (a combination of the words, thin and inspiration), on the search bar of these media platforms. The images range from high fashion models that appear unhealthily thin, as well as girls smiling in pictures they take of themselves, wearing nothing but underwear so you can see each bone unnaturally protruding from their sunken skin. Along with these photos there are written posts, hashtagged as “meanspo”, which is defined as hateful words meant to “inspire” young girls to lose weight. When other harmful words pertaining to mental illness are searched glamorization is never found to be rare. When typing “cutting” in the search bars, there are pictures of
