This paper is based on my personal experience and theory or idea of experts who talks about emotional competence. Personally, this topic is one of the most important factor to be a tomorrow’s ‘leader’ because people who have high emotional competence are not named leaders; however, all leaders tend to have high EC. What is emotional competence? EC is the ability to correctly recognize, effectively utilize, and appropriately manage or express emotions. 1 Although this term can be defined by many ways, it can be composed of five specific components. These five factors are first part of this paper and next and the last will be unique reflection according to my life story.
Self-awareness. This concept is very basic but milestone of any type of competence because it is well known of a key to success. Self-awareness connects self-regulation and EC by understanding and evaluating yourself about your emotions in a scale. When you truly understand your emotion, you will be able to communicate others with sentimental. This is a step of social-awareness and it is somewhat related to social competence. Emotional and social competence has directly proportional relationship and by listening to other people and feel empathy while talking other people, you can improve SE. Social-awareness also can be used to the customers in service market. By understanding customers’ opinion and their favor, you can match and provide better service to them. The author states, “Emotional intelligence is your ability to recognize and understand emotions in yourself and others, and your ability to use this awareness to manage your behavior and relationships” (p. 17). EQ lays the foundation for many skills, such as, time management, communication, assertiveness, customer service, anger management, stress tolerance, and many other aspects of our life each day. Although our emotions will play an eminent role in our daily life, improved EQ skills will teach us to better control our emotions and keep our emotions from controlling our actions or behaviors. Additionally, we will learn how to better interact with others and build better and stronger relationships.
Having self awareness is a significant attribute to utilize when leading/managing others, interacting in social events and making personal decisions. Having the insight to distinguish your emotions, then using that knowledge to manage your behavior and relationships is being emotionally intelligent (Bradberry & Greaves, 2009). After using the Emotional Appraisal Instrument, I learned that self-awareness is my strongest emotional intelligence (EI) skill and my weakest EI skill is social awareness (TalentSmart, Inc., 2016).

In our everyday lives, we are constantly interacting with other individuals. These interactions have an effect on our emotions. We have to learn how to identify and deal with these emotions because they have a direct effect on how we deal with issues at work. Individuals can work their way through this process by becoming aware of the importance of emotional intelligence.
* Through the self-assessment on Leadership style and Emotional intelligence, I drew the inference that while I am good at gauging the emotions of my direct reports and peers, I often don’t intervene to better cement my professional relationship. It shall be my earnest endeavor to be more emotionally aware and apathetic.
