Reflection About Homeless

Before I read “A Brother Lost” by Ashley Womble I viewed homeless people as greedy and lazy. I believe I only saw one real homeless person and to turn out he was a sex offender and all you seen was people giving him free food and giving him money, only if they knew… I didn’t know who to believe, if I should help anyone out. Actually one time I gave this guy $10 because I believed he needed more than me but to turn out as soon as I walked into Wawa everyone was like why’d you give him money? He’s using it for drugs, he just lies to make people feel bad for him. I also viewed so called homeless people lazy. Homelessness exists as a prominent issue that plagues society in various ways. It brings about hardship and controversy as individuals struggle to survive on a daily basis. Additionally, this complication tears families apart and ostracizes individuals from a society where they once belonged. A specific problem regarding homelessness consists of lack of interest from bystanders; some of these spectators refuse to even acknowledge homeless individuals sitting at their feet. As homeless people live their lives on street-corners, the more fortunate members of society choose to engulf themselves in their personal problems alone. Displayed by their clothing and accessories, most of these individuals possess the ability to help in some way;

Homeless people have been around us for a long time. It occurs when the family faces problems and leave each other with nothing on them. Disabled people often get rejected from social services and end up in the streets. Veterans get robbed by the government and end up on the streets too. Everyone dreams of living in a house someday and not living on the streets. The government should make rules that help and benefit homeless people. Sometimes kids, at a young age, leave their parents because they have a lot of conflicts going on around the house. Homeless people’s lives are hard. Homeless people apply to get the job but get rejected by the manager because they have nothing on them and because they are poor. Sometimes a person getting out of prison will have a hard time getting a job too. Let’s see how there are sociological perspectives and how they view homelessness.

One of the major issues nationally is people who are becoming homeless and the fact that one third of the homeless population have served this country, which is around 195,000 veterans. Thats more than the death count of the Vietnam war. Most homeless people are male about three percent are women, most are single and come from disadvantaged backgrounds. It's a major issue, this is America there should not be thousands of people across this nation that are homeless especially our veterans. They gave their life to this country; I think in return we could at least keep them in a home somewhere. It wouldn't be so bad if their was actually enough shelters to occupy all of the people that are homeless but the ratio to

Homelessness affects millions of Americans each year, with approximately one third of this population suffering from severe mental disorders. In Las Cruces we have a number of homeless people that have a mental disorder. Las Cruces does not provide the homeless mentally ill with sufficient services. it is necessary to provide them with support, protection, treatment, and rehabilitation.

The controversial issue of the homeless in New York has been an ongoing battle for several years. Many leaders like Andrew Cuomo have come to the conclusion that obligating homeless people into shelters should be enforced, yet others oppose the idea. They believe such harsh actions shouldn 't be taken. Journalist like Hinckley, who wrote "Can New York Force Homeless People into Shelters?" and Marc Santo, who wrote "Keep New York 's homeless off the streets!" have written articles with fact based information with details on the homeless living conditions. In my opinion, such actions shouldn 't occur. The homeless in New York have the right to choose their living conditions, therefore they shouldn 't be obligated to be put in shelters.

Throughout life we take on many different perspectives. As we grow older our perspective on life changes. From the teetering world of a toddler to the unfair, my-parents-hate-me reality of a teenager our perspectives change. My perspective on homeless people began at age 10 but shifted radically at the age of 13.

When you first hear the word homelessness what are your feelings or thoughts? Are they positive or negative? When some people hear that word they instantly feel pity or sadness. Some people even feel fear, shame, and disgust. What are the right feelings to have towards someone who is homeless? Are there any right or wrong feeling or thoughts to have? “Around the world, homeless people are referred to in derogatory terms – vermin, cockroaches, pigeons – things to be exterminated”(2). “They are seen as dirty, lacking morals, and burdens on society”(2). “The current outbreak of homelessness has been a major social issue for well over three decades” (Burt et al, 2001; Donley & Wright, 2008;

Homelessness is a serious problem in our society. Every night in our nation thousands of people are on the streets. This type of behavior is considered deviant because it does not reflect the norms and values of our society. In many cases the homeless people in our country are treated as total outcasts. Many of these people have severe mental disorders. Some are victims of an economy that has failed them. One may ask how such harsh situations exist in such an advanced society. With all the money and programs created to help people it seems ridiculous that this behavior exists. In a society where people have so much how is it possible that there are still people that have so little. The homeless are humans, no different than anyone else.

When we were first introduced to this assignment, I was both excited and nervous. I was excited because it gave me the opportunity to step of my comfort zone. I was also excited to be able to get out into the community and practice some of the social work skills that we have learned in class. I was nervous because I knew it would be hard to hear the struggles of a single-parent experiencing homelessness. As someone who was raised by a single-parent, I also know how easy it can be to fall into homelessness. Overall, I think I was more excited about doing this assignment because I truly did want to hear the stories that single-parents experiencing homelessness wanted to tell.

The homeless stand down was an eye-opener experience for me. I had the opportunity to interact with several individuals, and one family. Initially I conducted some interviews with them to help complete the questionnaire; and the remainder of the time, I escorted the individuals and helped them choose items that were necessary for them. As I talked to each of them, I realized that the present state of these individuals were a product of the current economic situations. According to the National Homeless Coalition (2009), work factors are one of the many reasons why individuals are homeless. One of the individuals that I spoke to informed me that he was working a regular nine to five job at a construction site, but now due to the

Affordable Housing is the social problem and the social issue addressed by the social problem is homelessness.      Homelessness as an issue in today's society is largely ignored. To many, the problem of homelessness is invisible or barely noticed. When these people do see the homeless it is found in the form of beggars who need to “pull themselves up by their bootstraps” or mentally ill people who “just can't help themselves”. In either case the central point remains; the homeless must be people who are incapable or unwilling to help themselves. After all, wouldn't they stop being homeless if they just tried? These sorts of rationalizations cover a more disturbing truth; that for many in today's society, the spectre of homelessness is more pressing of a problem than helping those who are already on the

One of the problems at hand that not only us, in the United States have but, all around the world in different countries have, is homeless people.

Many homeless people periodically starve with no shelter or clothing to keep them warm. Ranging from elderly, middle aged, and young aged. While fortunate families have everything they need to survive. As human beings we can not control our future. As individuals with our own problems to solve, we should extend our hand and give those in need resources to attain their needs.
