Plastic Bags: Replace, Reuse or Recycle
Plastic bags are an everyday part of our lives, we use them without thought and often discard them in the trash once they are no longer needed. If you looked in your kitchen in the pantry or under the kitchen sink; you would probably find a significant number of plastic bags stored there. We rarely stop to think about what the proper way to dispose of a plastic bag would be or if there is a proper way to achieve this. Just take a moment to reflect about how much plastic based products are a vital part of our everyday lives. Then ask yourselves, what we as a community, can do to explore methods for the disposal of plastics bags. One option that comes to mind includes contacting your local county representatives to ask about increased recycling or proper disposal opportunities for plastic bags. If recycling plastic bags in your local area is too cost prohibitive, then perhaps there should be a discussion on alternative options the plastic bag.
Many people take for granted that plastic bags are recyclable when they are not a commonly acceptable recyclable material. For instance, in Fairfax County, Virginia which is a part of the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area and has a current population of over 1 million people, there are currently no recycling facilities within the county that accept plastic bags for processing. Consider for a moment how
There are so many different ways our world can recycle ,The goal is to reduce the amount of waste ,
He sites from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “plastic bags, sacks, and wraps of all kinds (not just grocery bags) make up only about 1.6 percent of all municipal solid waste materials. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) bags, which are the most common kind of plastic grocery bags make up just 0.3 percent of this total.” From this statistic, plastic bags are not using a lot of waste that the average person would assume. Also, most users of plastic bags
According to ecowatch.com, all the plastic humans added up thrown away added up can circle the Earth four times. This is around 500 billion plastic bags, and most of them end up on landfill sites. The plastic bags in landfills usually lay there for over 300 years until they are completely photodegraded, or decomposed by the light, especially sunlight. During the process of being photodegraded, the plastic bags break down into small toxic particles that are either released into the air, or into the soil. These small toxic particles contaminate many different things such as soil and waterways. Since it is in the soil and waterways, animals often come and end up eating these dangerous toxic particles. Some supermarkets use biodegradable bags that are said to be “environment friendly,” but that is a total lie. According to an article about plastic bag pollution by Sharon Jacobsen, it says, “...the truth is that the process of breaking down these petrol based bags causes carbon to become methane which is a greenhouse gas.” Greenhouse gases are very dangerous to the environment since it causes temperature increase around the whole entire globe. Therefore, in conclusion, neither plastic bags or so-called “environment friendly” bags are good for the environment all around us, and we should not use them. Instead, we should use reusable
Thomas is the main character in the book series, “The Maze Runner.” In the story Thomas plays the role of the protagonist and is often the one who gets the team out of tough situations. In the first book Thomas is the last boy to enter the Glade (the area where the boys re kept for experimentation). When he arrived at the Glade he had no idea who he was, where he was, and why he was there. After a bit of time goes by Thomas finds out about what the Glade is all about. He instantly decides he wants to become a runner, which happened to be the most dangerous job at the Glade. The runners were the most athletic and most experienced boys who often held the highest rankings. But when Thomas decided he wanted to become a runner, he didn’t want to
To complete ban the use of plastic bags could lead to taxing individuals that can’t afford it such as the elderly. Mare Gunther informed, “Industry says [plastic bags are] used, often as garbage bags, or to carry kids’ lunches to school, or pick up dog poop” (Source D). Bringing to light some of the uses of plastic bags alone also shows that to completely dispose of the use of plastic in communities will led to discusses on how or what they’ll replaces it with. Though paper may seem to be the solution it was stated, “Paper production emits […] 70 percent more pollution than the production of plastic bags” (source F). Though some may say that communities can just use reusable bags as a solution they also have their draw backs as well. Such as increasing water usage to clean bags and they aren’t useful for activities such as throwing away garbage and picking up
To many, plastic bags are seen as malevolent and criminal, and heavy campaigns have been pushed into our communities to ban the use of them and enforce those beliefs, but in actuality, plastic bags aren’t as horrible as we make them out to be for
The question of capital punishment has been stirring heated debate in regards to whether it indeed does or doesn’t deter criminal activities. It is important before venturing deeper to under what death penalty/capital punishment is. Capital punishment refers to a legal course of action where the state puts one to death as a punishment for a crime. The decree by the judiciary for a person to be
Caroline Hwang, in writing The Good Daughter, explains the way it feels to be born into a distinct culture that does not correspond with the culture of her heritage. In her writing, she details the mental struggle she deals with in being Korean versus being American. Hwang uses a variety of rhetorical strategies such as metaphors, diction, and rhetorical appeals. In Hwang’s conflictions between differing cultures, she becomes aware of her forgotten Korean culture once a fellow Korean woman points out Hwang’s mispronunciation of her own last name. Hwang, adding in her emotion state post dropping out of graduate school, stating it was a “torn up map for the future,” and it was not only where she was going but who she was, creates a somber tone. Many college students, whom have graduated or dropped out, relate to the emotional distress. She sums her feelings as “staring at the bottom on the abyss.”(16) Attending college is of great importance to not only the
Recycling is one of the most common ways to keep America clean. The recycling bins are one of the most recognizable logos across the world. People all across the U.S. have recycling bins, inside of their household. The sad thing is most people do not use them, they most of the time just throw stuff in the regular trash that could be recycled. For example, plastic, paper, cans, glass, cardboard, and even computer hardware (www.recycleacrossamerica.org). People don’t realize that they could be doing the world a big favor, just by recycling these everyday items.
Plastic bags cause a massive amount of pollution to the earth. It lets out lots of CO2 into the air with the production of it. CO2 is a greenhouse gas that if let out too much at one time can hurt the planet. Not only do plastic bags produce pollution while being made, but also when they are decomposing. Plastic bags go on to last for up to 10-1000 years. That is possibly 1000 years that a plastic bag goes on to add the huge amount of trash in the world. Although plastic bags take so long to decompose they do eventually break down. Exposure to a lot of sunlight and wind will also speed up the process of the decomposition of plastic bags. The breaking down of plastic bags seems like a good thing, however it is the complete opposite. Plastic bags are broken down into microscopic particles that are toxic. Those toxic particles then go on to hurt the environment. An articles states, “They break down into tiny toxic particles that contaminate the soil and waterways and enter the food chain when animals accidentally ingest them.”. This goes to show that those
The resources and things that go into making plastic bags can be used for other important things.
We know that nowadays plastic is the one materials that widely used by human in all of the country. Most of our goods become from plastic. The bad news is, plastics wastes that come from our unusable goods end up in the oceans. There are 60% to 80% plastic wastes on the sea are coming from the land and it will cause a big problem to 267 sea species in this world (Moore, Lattin, & Zellers). That one example is more than enough to start recycling our plastic waste. We can start from reduce and reuse first. For reduce example: when we buy something, we should prepare our own bag to put the goods we buy, dispose the waste according to the bin that specially provided for plastic, use a refill bottle for our drink bottle, and prefer a paper bag than plastic bag. How about reuse plastic bag? Some of countries have creative company that selling fine art and use plastic waste as the basic materials. One of the countries that have company like that is Indonesia. Indonesia has a lot of home industry that use plastic waste as their main materials. They make new thing from plastic bottle, such as plastic flower art, windmill toys for children, table lamp, and house accessories. Some schools in Indonesia teach the students how to reuse the plastic waste and make a fine art from it. Reduce and reuse the plastic waste already counted as recycling the plastic waste. Never think
Recycling is presently one of the most controversial topics, considering that while most individuals put across their support regarding the act the number of individuals who actually do something in order to recycle is much smaller. Many people are currently unable or unwilling to recycle properly because the process often requires a series of changes in one's life. It is thus essential for the authorities to provide educational programs meant to assist individuals in understanding why recycling is important and in learning how to recycle effectively. People need to accept the fact that the benefits of recycling will reflect on the future and that conditions are currently critical as a result of the fact that the masses are generally unacquainted with the importance of this process.
As the United States deals with the overwhelming amounts of waste building up, Nitin et al explain that “plastics take anywhere from 15 to 1000 years to biodegrade” once they are discarded (Nitin). Changes in recycling methods can no longer keep up with the exorbitant amount of waste produced in the United States. This is why some states choose to take their initiative one step further by placing either fees or a ban on the use of plastic bags. Due to the enormous waste the United States produces on a daily basis and the negative outcomes of this trash including adverse health effects, harmful impacts on nature, and the exponential piling of trash in landfills, the US government should ban plastic bags.
I decided to write this report after watching a documentary called, “Plastic Bags Environmental Impacts" on YouTube. The video showed poor innocent animals wrapped up in plastic bags and it made me feel heartbroken. So I wanted to find out what other issues do plastic bags create and if we really need to ban them, or if we need to find other alternatives, or just manage our use of them. Plastic bags have a benefit ‘convenience’, as most people nowadays use plastic bags for all sort of things e.g. moving things, reusing for shopping, art and crafts which show people are reusing them seen they are so convenient. My hypothesis is: Plastic bags are causing a problem and together we need to find a solution. My key questions are: What are the issues that plastic bags create? Are their environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic bags? How can we manage the use of plastic bags?
