The Reconstruction was a period of roughly ten years that came after the American Civil War. During this time black Americans were able to vote, attend school and even hold public office. These ten years were a small break for black Americans following the end of slavery and preceding the Jim Crow Laws of the South. There is a question to be answered, who killed Reconstruction? There are those who say that the South lead to the end of Reconstruction because of the actions of hate groups such as the Ku Klux Klan. However, the most important cause of the end of Reconstruction were the actions of the North because of lingering racism and a lack of caring by Northerners.
There is one way of thinking that is of the belief that the South caused the end of the Reconstruction, this is due to groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and its actions. In the South there were multiple groups of people who were “at odds” with the Klan. These included freed slaves, Carpetbaggers which is a term for Northerners who came south for the Reconstruction, and Scalawags who are southerners who supported the reconstruction. There were numerous cases of the Klan inflicting harm upon members of these groups. For example, in Document A there is a letter written by a Northerner

The Reconstruction and its end is an important time period in American history. This period of time was important to black culture in the United States and lead to the development of black churches and black universities. The ending of the Reconstruction in 1877 also marks the beginning of a period of history that will last almost one hundred years. Following Reconstruction are the Jim Crow Laws that are passed in the South that will lead to American Civil Rights Leaders and the Civil Rights
The Reconstruction. A time of rebuilding the south, this was the case until the north decided to have it fizzle away and disappear before it was finished. The reconstruction was entirely created by the north to fix the south following the Civil war and many people believed it was the south that killed the reconstruction yet there's a lot of evidence that points to the north like, Northern racism to blacks and them getting tired of the reconstruction. Contrary to popular belief the south were not the only ones who were racist toward the blacks back in the days of the reconstruction, in fact, it may be one of the key reasons the reconstruction fell apart. In (Document D), it shows the black people to be unfit to be in a court let alone
Since that occurred Troops were being removed from the south and blacks weren’t happy about that. North is to blame for the end of reconstruction because they were more concerned about the government and its corruption. “Weary of the ‘Negro Question’ and sick of the
The reconstruction, which lasted from 1865 - 1877, had some feats but largely was a failure at accomplishing its goals. It succeeded in readmitting the Southern states to the union, but failed in integrating them fully; the Nation still remained divided by political lines. It helped to rebuild a war ravaged South until the North lost interest in the South and it gave former slaves and people of color more rights and political representation than they ever had before, but the South passed various codes, tests, and laws to limit the black resurgence and keep the old power structure. By 1870 the reconstruction successfully readmitted all the southern states that seceded under Andrew Johnson's plan, however all the states restored their conservative governments within 9 years of readmission (reconstruction map) because of Andrew Johnson's leniency to the South. After the division of the South into military districts in 1867, the governments established were under control of the radical Republicans and gave blacks the power to vote and participate in the government.
The north grew weary of the ‘Negro Question’ and ‘sick of carpet-bag’ the started to go against all of these policies (Doc C). In the 1870s they were high-level scandals and Ulysses S Grant presidency cause by corrupt officials appointed by him. Grant was a trusted president but how ever his officials were not. They caused problems such as the tammany ring, whiskey ring, and the Belknap affair were all scandals. All of the corrupt government in the north caused people to lose their faith and focus in reconstruction. (Doc C) The fall of 1873 the Boston Evening Transcript wrote a letter arguing that the blacks were unfitted people for the proper exercise of political duties (Doc D). The North were slowly turning into the south by showing hatred of blacks. They thought that since they were uneducated it would take the a very long time to learn how to read or write. They painted them as aggressive demanding people. (Doc D Cartoon). They started to go against reconstruction and focus more on political things that the thought of reconstruction faded
Reconstruction was a time period of major change in the United States of America for both African Americans and White citizens. After the Civil War, the reconstruction process started out as a failure, but over the years turned into a huge success because of how African Americans were able to live normal lives. Overall, Reconstruction was a success because freedom and growth of equality for African Americans was increased greatly.
Obviously, the beginning of the Reconstruction was when the United States was at it’s lowest point, with no new amendments regarding slavery, with lots of destruction and death, and a lot of work to do ahead. Once things began to progress, things started to look up, especially for African Americans. The United States was becoming a more equalized environment, until the later events from 1870-1877, with the Ku Klux Klan ordeal, and the removal of federal protection in the South. Clearly, this twelve year Reconstruction period had made the US become a better and more controlled place than it was before, but the ending events caused damage to the minorities living in the South which would last for a very long time until the Martin Luther King Jr. era. If it were up to me, I would have kept protection in the South for a longer period of time, until the US was a guaranteed place of
The reconstruction period refers to the time between 1865 and 1877. It refers to the period after the American civil war where the South of United States wanted to secede and form its country. It was an opportunity for transformation and a series of changes that were directed by congress. During this period, the state and society were influenced by different leaders, thinkers and activists that believed in the post-Reconstruction of United States and regarded that African-American upward mobility needed top priority. There were also leaders that were against this movement and struggled to have their voice heard by congress so that things would remain just as they were.
Reconstruction era was a period of extraordinary changes for African Americans. However, few of these changes lasted long enough for blacks to engage in the freedom they earned. During the reconstruction era man new acts and laws came into place, unfortunately these were not acknowledged, this caused for discrimination to prevail. The Civil Rights Movement provided mass movement to end the racial segregation and discrimination. Countless black youth and adults risked their lives to address the reconstruction failure of promoting education and economic quality, and create an end for unfair voting.
Reconstruction was a period of time that took place directly after the Civil War when the Confederacy was ruled by the Union government and military. Reconstruction is sometimes seen as a good thing because it did help out the newly freed African Americans, and the recently deprived white Southerners. However, it also created tension and resentment between Southerners and Northerners, as well as between the whites and the blacks, and, when the Reconstruction was over and the whites were back in office, they saw blacks as the enemy, and they took out the anger and injustice they felt they had received on the blacks. It brought the nation together once more, but it made the racial gap wider than ever.
Reconstruction has been brutally murdered! For a little over a decade after the Civil War, the victorious North launched a campaign of social, economic, and political recovery in the former Confederacy and to readmit the land in the former Confederacy back into the United States as states. Reconstruction yielded many benefits for African Americans. The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments freed African Americans, made them citizens, and gave them the right to vote respectively. The Freedmen’s Bureau also provided African Americans and poor whites with education, jobs, and supplies. Despite this, Reconstruction was cut short in 1877. The North killed Reconstruction because of racism, negligence, and distractions.
Reconstruction took placed in the South from 1865 to 1880. It impacted the United States’ history by holding the South back economically behind the
The Reconstruction Era was a time of incorporation between the northern and southern states in the United States after the Civil War. Since the northern states won the Civil War, they sought freedom for the blacks from slavery; although the northern states sought freedom for the blacks, the blacks were still oppressed by special laws for them and they lacked many living necessities. During the Reconstruction Era, blacks were free by law, but no resources and racism kept blacks in slavery.
American Reconstruction began in 1865 at the end of the civil war. The period's main focus was to rebuild the country after war by enacting and changing many key pieces of legislature in the American government. One divisive factor that needed to be addressed was how much representation African Americans deserved in America. During the reconstruction period, African American rights were extended through various new amendments and working opportunities, however, these rights did not last long as they were undermined by black codes and sharecropping.
Reconstruction is the period of rebuilding the south that succeeded the Civil War (1861-1865). This period of time is set by the question now what? The Union won the war and most of the south was destroyed. Devastation, buildings turned into crumbles and lost crops. The South was drowning in poverty. To worsen the situation there were thousands of ex-slaves that were set free by the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13 Amendment. "All these ex-slaves", Dr. Susan Walens commented, "and no place to put them," The ex-slaves weren't just homeless but they had no rights, unlike white man. The government and congress had to solve the issues present in the south and the whole nation
Reconstruction was the time period following the Civil War, which lasted from 1865 to 1877, in which the United States began to rebuild. The term can also refer to the process the federal government used to readmit the defeated Confederate states to the Union. While all aspects of Reconstruction were not successful, the main goal of the time period was carried out, making Reconstruction over all successful. During this time, the Confederate states were readmitted to the Union, the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments were ratified, and African Americans were freed from slavery and able to start new lives.
