Ralph Waldo Emerson said “Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow.” Emerson was an essayist and a poet, so he was constantly having to try new things in order to grow as a writer. I believe that Emerson was not just stating a fact, but that he was speaking from his own experience. Emerson had learned that one had to try new things in order to achieve new skills or abilities. As a result, Emerson stated the very quote that many people live by today. Following Emerson's instructions can be as easy as applying a simple mindset to yourself. Soon, the results will pay off quite nicely.

Benefits of trying something new include knowing how to do the thing itself, and also having the pleasure of knowing that you did something that was new and got it right. An example would be if you went out of country to somewhere foreign and could not speak the language and struggled. If you planned to return to the same place another time, the smart thing to do would be to start picking up and learning some of the language. The result would be that you would have to work hard to learn the language, but once you returned to the place you would enjoy it much more knowing how to talk to other people and understand what is going on around you. On the other hand, if you never would have tried to learn a new language you would still be stuck not knowing what people are saying, and would not enjoy yourself as much.
