Then Rainsford jumped….. Into the crashing waves of the ocean , only to struggle to reach the surface of the water. He swam and swam on to be meet with the clashing of waves. Finally he reached the surface as oxygen filled his lungs. He knew he had two decisions either go back to General Zaroff’s house or give up and die in there, either way it seemed like a losing battle. As Rainsford pondered in the water he began to think about life before he fell off the boat and into the water and his way onto the devil island. He began to think about life and what he would be doing now. Like shaving his beard which had grown out since he got on this island. Or eating because Rainsford was a hungry man. But was tall and and masculine man yet always seemed to be chubby. He had yellow teeth from …show more content…
He also kept his head bald so it wouldn’t interfere, but now his head wasn’t bald because he didn’t have anything to shave with on the island.Yet out of all the things Rainsford thought about in the ocean his mind constantly drift back to how he was to get out of this situation. But nevertheless he began to swim in the direction of General Zaroff’s home. He swam and swam until he saw lights . He got out of the water and began to walk towards the lights not thinking but acting on instinct . Then there was a rustling in the bushes and there appeared a dog a big dog which looked very hungry. The dog began to growl and off instinct and not reason Rainsford ran and ran towards the house but the dog was getting closer so he kept running but the dog had got him . Before Rainsford knew it the dog was on top of him eating at his flesh and tearing it away. Rainsford lates there completely giving up. Then a voice boomed through the darkness it was the voice of General Zaroff’s. The dog stopped and took of in the opposite direction of the voice . Then there was no longer a voice but footsteps getting closer and
The First World War began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary, killed by a Serbian group. The assassination prompted Austria-Hungary to declare war against Serbia. Russia supported Serbia; Austria-Hungary had assistance from Germany; and France and Great Britain had allied with Russia. Then, the declaration of war began. France, Great Britain, and Germany fought on the Western Front while Russia battled Germans on the Eastern Front.
The man asks Rainsford why he is out in this island all Rainsford says is he’s out hunting and heard the crash. Rainsford tells Jack about the mansion and as soon as they arrive there he’ll fix him up and take care of him. Jack has no idea what is wrong with Rainsford but something is not right about him. Two hours later they arrive at the mansion.
Beyond his reactive and resourceful ways of thinking, Rainsford is visibly aggressive and energetic when he has to fight instead of fleeing. He refuses to allow himself to give up and be killed by Zaroff and decides to keep on running forward. As the hunter is escaping, he says, “Nerve, nerve, nerve!” and then “forced himself on toward that gap”, where he “leaped far out into the sea.” (14). Rainsford believed that he still had enough energy left to swim in the harsh waters. As a result, he experienced a rush of adrenaline due to how
“Due to being the only reigning champion of your sick twisted games Zaroff, I believe I should be given the reward of turning the tables.” Rainsford’s heart was still racing as the adrenaline of coming face to face with his captor coursed through his veins. Rainsford knew it was one of the worst options for him to return to the island after making such a jump. He should’ve attempted to swim far, far away although that may have just resulted in his death.
Rainsford is an intelligent man. Early in the story, “Rainsford remembered the shots. They had come from the right, and he doggedly swam in that direction” (34). Rainsford had just fallen in the water,
It had been a week since Rainsford managed to kill the nefarious General Zaroff. The challenging part was almost over or so it seemed. There was not a clear way for Rainsford to escape. As days passed, Rainsford tried to escape. He tried making a boat from driftwood that he found, he tried swimming, he even tried sending a signal by using a flashlight. Rainsford had become so desperate that he even tried some ridiculous plans like trying to pole vault across the ocean. As a result, Rainsford ended up having huge gashes in his left leg ,which got infected, and he had to amputate it. As days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, Rainsford had lost hope and became bitter.
He knows it would be insane to blunder on through the dark, even if he had the strength. Rainsford behaves foolishly when he falls into the water because he is curious about the sounds coming from the island. He is also foolish because he assumes that Zaroff will not be hunting him, when it should be clear that Rainsford is exactly the prey he is looking for. He also has a strong sense of moral responsibility.
He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided. Morning rises slowly as Rainsford lie sound asleep. Noon approaches and Rainsford wakes up saying to himself, “I have never slept this well or peaceful.” He gets up and looks out the window to where the hounds had eaten General Zaroff; they had eaten all the meat and fat off the bones. Rainsford swings open both the windows and yells down to the hounds, “Was that good or great?” The hounds look up and some wag their tails while others barked and whimpered sounding like they were asking for more. ”Sorry, guys, I have no more. That was the only cold-blooded murderer on the island.” Somehow, it looked as though the dogs understood him and they returned to what they were doing. Rainsford looks around the chateau, up
My alternate ending starts the morning after the apprehensive night that Rainsford was in the jungle. In the story, that morning Rainsford hears the cry of some startled bird that focused him into that direction. He hears something coming the same way he had come. That which was approaching was a man. At this point in the story is where my version of the ending begins.
Rainsfords point of view does not change by the end of the story. He knew he won the game at the end when Zaroff thought he had killed himself. Because he was still alive the only way for him to win the game and have a chance of getting off the island was to kill Zaroff. “‘ I am still a beast at bay,’ he said, in a low, hoarse voice, ‘Get ready, General Zaroff’” (Connell 28)
Rainsford woke up, and forgot where he was for a moment. He rolled out of Zaroff’s bed and looked across the room at his dead body. He sighed, realizing he could have just accepted his victory and moved on off of the island, but something inside just couldn’t let it go. After lying awake for awhile, he decided to search the place for anything he could use to get off of the the island, and any people that he could bring with him. As he was searching the house, he found a kitchen with the tools any chef would drool over. While walking through, Rainsford checked all the kitchen cabinets, like a burglar searching for valuable items in a rich man’s house. When he finally found a cabinet without utensils, it wasn’t food he found in the cabinet, but
When he reached it he stopped and paced back and forth in an odd impatient way. Like he was waiting and had an idea what could it be? After a solid 25 minutes of pacing Rainsford stops and takes a stick broke it in two, one half he keeps the other he whipps into the water. With the first half he takes it and writes in the sand a symbol. It looks like a box with a cross and star inside of it.” What is this am I going mad and I insane?”. Rainsford says out loud. Soon the rain washes away the writing he had written in his moment of said to be insane. Still persistent about finding out where the General is and where that barking had come from he continues the search. Running around in the mad search he finds himself in a futile position of not finding the answer to his questions that were beginning to eat away at him. Still run he questions himself is what I am doing naive? Am I not doing what is right am I going insane from being on this island for to long? Has the General played his worst grotesque game yet the game against myself the game of my mind that has caused me to go insane?
In the speech, Day of Infamy, FDR talks about the events of Pearl Harbor. FDR talks about how the US is now entered into World War II basically because of this event, he tells that the US is going to war with Japan specifically at first. He is explaining to the Vice President, Mr. Speaker, Members of the Senate, and and the House of Representatives what conclusion he has come up with. He uses rank in the government to show that he knows what he is talking about. Mostly FDR is trying to get the people in the room on his side with facts, and emotion backing him in more ways than one.
