On page 43, the separation of the text occurs after the incomplete thought. On page 43 the story says “It's so dark,” he thought, “that I could sleep without closing my eyes; the night would be my eyelids–” then the separation of the text occurs. This supports the idea that Rainsford's adventure was just a dream because previously, the text mentions that Rainsford was drowsy, the dash after the unfinished sentence and the separation of the text could represent Rainsford falling asleep. This feature could represent the start of the dream and that the sentence “An abrupt sound startled him” on line 70 was the start the the whole episode on the island. When a line is skipped in the story it could also mean a period of time has passed. On page 55, …show more content…
When Ivan returns, the text is separated. On page 55, line 540, Ivan returns with the supplies, “Under one arm he carried khaki hunting clothes, a haversack of food, a leather sheath containing a log-bladed knife; his right hand rested on a cocked revolver thrust in the crimson sash about his waist”. After that sentence, there is a line skipped, and the story continues when Rainsford has already been searching through the island for two hours. On page 55, line 544, after the blank line, “Rainsford had fought his way through the bush for two hours” this shows that the separation of the text also indicates a period of time has passed. This feature also supports the idea that the whole adventure on the island was a dream because it could mean that the separation of the text in the beginning meant that Rainsford had already been asleep for a period of time. There is one last place where there is a separation of the text on the last page of the story. Rainsford had eluded General Zaroff for three days and instead of choosing to be hunted, he leaped into the sea. He then returns to the Cossack's home to
Rainsford heard a shot in the far distance and was curious about where it had come from, another shot came about and it had originated from Ship-Trap Island, Rainsford thoroughly paced himself to the edge of the yacht and wondered "Who could be on that Island?," a slight breeze had taken up Rainsford's cigar, and flew in the far distance to where Rainsford could no longer see where it had gone. Rainsford then fell off the deck and into the blood warming water and another shot had gone off, Rainsford paced himself to the shot and was now on Ship-Trap Island unconscious through the night. When he had woken up, he had found animal and human tracks and decided to follow them so Rainsford did. Rainsford met a tall man named General Zaroff who was very kind, respectful and well educated and also was a hunter. General Zaroff liked hunting humans and Rainsford had contemplated that was preposterous. General Zaroff and Rainsford had very different dissents about each others
In line 73-76, it says, "An abrupt sound that startled him. Off to the right he heard it, and his ears, expert in such matters, could not be mistaken. Again he heard the sound and again Somewhere, off in the blackness, someone had fired a gun three times." This builds suspense because it doesn't tell you what's going on until later. It makes you feel like you should run and hide but instead, Rainsford goes towards the gunshots to see what is going on. In lines 80-81, it says, "He leapt upon the rail and balanced himself there, to get greater elevation...." The word "...leapt" is there to show how Rainsfort was moving. He was agile and it seemed to be like he knew what he was doing. In line 98-99, it says, "Rainsford remembered the shots. They had come from the right, and doggedly, he swam in that direction...." The word "doggedly" was put there to emphasise how he was swimming. He was swimming in a way that made it seem like he wanted out of there. There are many other quotes regarding diction and that's where we lead to

It had been a week since Rainsford managed to kill the nefarious General Zaroff. The challenging part was almost over or so it seemed. There was not a clear way for Rainsford to escape. As days passed, Rainsford tried to escape. He tried making a boat from driftwood that he found, he tried swimming, he even tried sending a signal by using a flashlight. There is a lot of evidence of premeditation in this story all leading to the demise of Fortunato. The narrator wants to get revenge but have no consequences for the murder. Early in the story the narrator states, “At length I would be avenged; this was a point definitely, settled --but the very definitiveness with which it was resolved precluded the idea of risk,” (Poe 1). When the narrator states his idea of getting revenge without getting caught. This shows how much of a planner he is for this murder. He will plan the perfect way to kill without anyone knowing. The narrator also states, “It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season, that I encountered my friend,” (Poe 1). The setting for this murder almost seems to perfect. It’s dark outside during carnival, later suggesting that everyone is drunk. This tells the reader that the narrator planned for this exact moment in which he will get revenge. Because of these quotes in the story the reader can suggest that the narrator has premeditated this
