On page 43, the separation of the text occurs after the incomplete thought. On page 43 the story says “It's so dark,” he thought, “that I could sleep without closing my eyes; the night would be my eyelids–” then the separation of the text occurs. This supports the idea that Rainsford's adventure was just a dream because previously, the text mentions that Rainsford was drowsy, the dash after the unfinished sentence and the separation of the text could represent Rainsford falling asleep. This feature could represent the start of the dream and that the sentence “An abrupt sound startled him” on line 70 was the start the the whole episode on the island. When Ivan returns, the text is separated. On page 55, line 540, Ivan returns with the supplies, “Under one arm he carried khaki hunting clothes, a haversack of food, a leather sheath containing a log-bladed knife; his right hand rested on a cocked revolver thrust in the crimson sash about his waist”. After that sentence, there is a line skipped, and the story continues when Rainsford has already been searching through the island for two hours. On page 55, line 544, after the blank line, “Rainsford had fought his way through the bush for two hours” this shows that the separation of the text also indicates a period of time has passed. This feature also supports the idea that the whole adventure on the island was a dream because it could mean that the separation of the text in the beginning meant that Rainsford had already been asleep for a period of time. There is one last place where there is a separation of the text on the last page of the story.
