Most people picture old women in the eighteenth century sewing small pieces of cloth together when they hear the word “quilting.” But quilting includes much more fun and details to it than just that. Originating in the Middle Ages, medieval people would sew quilted padding for a soldier’s armor. Made more famous in the seventeenth century, ladies would start quilting bees, where they would join together in an afternoon and sew quilts. Although quilting has been around for quite a while now, that does not mean people today cannot learn this craft. Every quilter needs to learn the basics first and after that, everything falls into place easily. Known for their elaborately pieced and decorative top, all quilts start with this step. To make a simple quilt, the following supplies must be collected: quilting thread, a needle, various patterned quilting cloth, fabric scissors, pins, batting, and an iron to smooth out the wrinkles. Beginners should start off with a simple nine patch quilting pattern; this pattern usually consists of two different colors alternating to form a three-by-three square. First, one has to cut out five fabric squares from one fabric, and then cut out four from another length of cloth; this should result in nine squares. Second, on the “wrong” side of the fabric, draw a border of one centimeter. This will allow the stitches to …show more content…
First, use a pencil to mark out one small square in the middle of every nine patch block. Next, sew the squares, making sure to sew only through the top two layers. When this is completed, flip both the decorative top with the batting attached and the plain bottom inside out and pin them together. Using either a sewing machine or a running stitch, sew three of the four sides together. Then, flip the quilt so the right side is on the outside. Finish the quilt up by using neat stitches to sew the opening
It is a difficult thing to limit this review to just a few quilts as there are many ways to interpret each piece. A great quilt with which to begin, however, is "Celebration # 2", which is a piece of substantial size measuring 64" x 84" and consisting of hand dyed and painted cotton, was magnificently crafted in 2015. The vibrant fuchsias, blues, greens, and purples begin to swirl resembling streams of colored lights dancing in a summer breeze, intertwining, and embracing one another as they move. It is a vibrant and modern piece, not like your grandmother 's quilt except maybe in dimensions. A kaleidoscope of colors captivates one’s eyes as they move past the upper layer of curves, looking deeper into the quilt at the background that appears to lay as though it were a still pool of water and oil from which the streams of color were formed, bringing the quilt to life.
When you first start quilting, you should just learn how to make the top. Use a piece of fleece or flannel fabric for the back, then tie the quilt together every 3 or 4 inches. Use 6 strands of embroidery floss that matches the color of the back and coordinates with the front, trim to about 1 inch. Every quilter will sometimes need to rip out a seam. When this happens to you, be patient and know that as you gain experience, there will be less ripping. You will need to purchase sewing supplies before you can sew. You will need a self healing cutting mat, cutting ruler, rotary cutter, fabric scissors, straight pins, washable fabric marking pens, sewing needles for the fabric you are using, a #75/11 will work well, seam ripper and possibly some

Traditional quilts are very delicate and some contain around 200,000 hand stitches. Humidity, heat, salt air and insects can easily affect quilts. Many traditional quilts never survived and it is important to save the ones that are still available. Hawaiians believe that the quilts contain a lot of Mana (power or spirit).
Erie’s Quilt Show will consist of quilts, old and new, from local people around the Erie area. “We want to have the people tell how the quilts were made, where they were made and who made them. Quilting goes way back to the ancient chinese and it became a lost art for a while, but it’s slowly starting to come
Quilting can also be used for expression of oneself or for social commentary. Back in the 1800’s when there were many wars women would usually make quilts because they were what was needed in those times and the fabric was often hard to come by and it was usually saved for clothes making.” It was a means to escape from the isolation of their lifestyle and it allowed them the artistic freedom to express themselves. The quilts produced by our ancestors told stories about their lifestyles that could not be captured by pen and paper. Every quilt we see today, regardless of when the quilt was made, relates a story. The types of fabrics, the design of the quilt, the signature of the quilter, all reveal an intimate story of the woman or man who made the quilt.” (Meeske,Quilt Me a Story) They used quilting to get out of the bleakness and horrible things that were going on in their lives at the moment and put how they felt in the quilts. Around the mid-1800’s women quilted a lot more to show artistic talent, political views, and even their emotions. “Prior to a woman’s ability to vote, some women used their artistic talents and expressed their political views through a quilt. The issue of slavery in the United States in the mid-1800s led to quilt patterns called Slave Chain
The quilt has been passed down from four generations in the Johnson family. It is part of history and represents their ancestor’s lives and stories. “They had been pieced by Grandma Dee and then Big Dee and me hung them on the quilt frames on the front porch and quilted them. One was in the Lone Star pattern. The other was Walk Around the Mountain. In both of them were scraps of dress Grandma Dee had worn fifty and more years ago. Bits and pieces of Grandpa Jerrell’s Paisley shirts. And one teeny faded blue
Culturally, the symbolism of a quilt is understood to be an heirloom piece that is closely guarded and highly prized. The ownership of the quilt and the generational lines it passes down is known before the piecing is begun. Stitching the pieces together is done by groups of women. The tiny bits of cloth each carry a memory, one from grandpa's shirt, one square from an aunt's Christmas dress, a piece from the flannel nightgown a mother wore as she pulled her sick child close to her bosom. The pieces are carefully and artistically pieced together into a collage of
Missionaries taught native Hawaiian women how to make quilts as early as 1820 and the traditional Hawaiian quilt developed by1870. Since quilts were created based on events or things seen in the quiltmaker’s life, the resulting design was often personal to the creator.

This form of quilting is known as patchwork quilting (African American Quilting, 2007). Many quilting patterns for quilts tops have been altered or change to fit the culture of the times. An example if this is During the Civil War, changes were made to the quilting pattern called “the traditional rose” it was modified by the adding of a black patch to the center of the design. It was then renamed the” Radical Rose” in response to the quarrel over slavery between the north and the south (Hedges,
Quilting is an artform that has been passed down through generations. The origins of quilting is still unknown to the public but it is known that it has been around for centuries. The art has traveled through sad and happy times in our world 's history, and it will continue to do that in the future. Quilting is defined as the joining together of layers of fabrics with lines stitching to form a bed cover, warm garment, or for decorative effect. Quilting has been pegged as being an older person 's activity or boring, but that simply is not true. More and more American children are being enrolled into sewing and quilting classes each year. The film I chose to watch was North Country. This movie included very few positive portrayals of businesspeople. One instance noted was when the owner of the company introduced himself to Josey and her children while at a local restaurant. He misspoke at first, calling Josey “one of my girls”. He quickly corrected himself and spoke in a more positive and professional tone, leaving Josey with a good first image of him and the company she now worked for.
