The film I chose to watch was North Country. This movie included very few positive portrayals of businesspeople. One instance noted was when the owner of the company introduced himself to Josey and her children while at a local restaurant. He misspoke at first, calling Josey “one of my girls”. He quickly corrected himself and spoke in a more positive and professional tone, leaving Josey with a good first image of him and the company she now worked for.
On the other hand, the film showed most often very negative portrayals of businesspeople. It was shown in the movie that the plant manager and the supervisors thought that women had no place working at the mine. They spoke of this directly to the women in more than one instance. This was a decision

The only thing noted as an ethical consideration or social responsible act was the sign encouraging safety. The unethical culture displayed by the senior level managers affected the men as well. By taking the negative stance they did regarding women in the workplace, the top management created a culture within the company that allowed their subordinates to behave in a manner that harmed the women that worked there, as well as did harm to the company and its image.
An example in the film of the owner of the company trying to negate his social responsibility was the conversation Pearson had with his attorney. She informed him that the company had no insurance against this type of lawsuit. She also told him that if he lost the case, it would mandate him to give paid leave to pregnant women, hire more lawyers to draft a sexual harassment policy, and many other things that would in essence be social responsibility. The comment made by Pearson on this matter was that the case would not be won, as this woman was a single mother and had a history of being with many different men. This was a statement not at all based on fact, but one from the rumor mill which had nothing to do with the job. This business owner was not conscientious at all about ethics or the social responsibility of the
The film mentioned the gender inequality and social stratification as well as struggles against racism during the Mexican-Americans miners’ strike in New Mexico. It shows how the miners were discriminated from white people who had higher ranking on the social ladder, and how the women were inferior to men economically and politically. The miner workers had same concept with Functionalist theories on the lecture where mentions “what is best for society means what is best for men”. However, at the end of the movie shows the entire working class community could all come together in a shared political action both men and women in the grim affairs of the strikers, and of the strong determination of the women to participate in the carrying on of
The five movies included in this assignment, The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit (1956), Network (1976), Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), The Social Network (2010) and Joy (2015), are all iconic business movies of their time. They all portray business practices and values in their own unique way. The characters’ roles and actions in these films shows how business has evolved over this sixty-year timeframe. Not only the types of businesses that they work for but also the gender roles, ethics of business, and ways in which business is conducted on a moral standpoint can also been seen evolving throughout time when these movies were released. The first film, The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, is a drama about a low income white collar worker named Tom
Racism is the large contender of the film. During the sixties, racism, especially involving African Americans was huge. With the film taking place in 1962-1963, segregation laws were still amidst and targeting was also at large. Many white Americans had this superiority complex that let so many horrible acts occur that it still surprises people today. Hilly Holbrook, Minny’s employer and social leader of the women in the town, is one of the main enthnocentrics in the film.
Furthermore, external factors derived from the Cold War catalysed the fall of the USSR. The Reagan Doctrine, a strategy implemented under the Reagan Administration which determined the US’s foreign policy towards the USSR, worsened the USSR’s decline. With Reagan’s appointment as US president in 1981 came a much tougher stance taken by the US against the USSR and its communist ideals. This can be seen when the policy of containment was dropped and that of rollback was adopted instead. Effectively, this means that the US aimed to eradicate communism, rather than prevent its spread. Some examples of how the policy of rollback as part of the doctrine took shape were the US’ covert intervention in the 1979 Soviet invasion and occupation of Afghanistan,
Northern and Southern United States both started their history differently. The South was mostly into farming, while the North was more about the industry. Both regions also had sectional differences in the way tariffs and slavery were intertwined. Since there were unfair tariffs that tested dominate leaders like the Britain Crown, many rebellions have been staged.
On a windy and rainy Saturday I went to the Short North for the first time. I had heard that it is a neighborhood as well as a shopping and dining area. I had also heard that it had been built up within the last few years and is popular for college age students. It has over 300 businesses and has been awarded various accolades. Through all of these things this place has acquired the title of “the art and soul of Columbus” (shortnorth.org). This motto evokes a sense of imagination and play through its creative and vibrant undertones, which I felt during my visit and is why people come and explore this place. Based on it’s inviting motto and my experience I became curious as to why this destination is significant or in other
North Country North Country is a film that takes place in Minnesota in the late 1980s. The film is about bringing justice to women who have been treated unfairly. What I found was very encouraging about the movie, was that it showed how important it is to stand up for others who are diminished. Therefore, I think the movie can inspire others to speak up and fight for any types of basic human rights. As shown in the movie, we do not always think to look at situations from the victims point of view.
Jefferson Davis understood that the key to defeating the South was controlling southern territory as a means of denying Confederate armies badly needed supplies. To prevent this, Davis sought to keep Southern military assets concentrated to the largest extent possible. Threats to the South would be dealt with through the use of railroads to move troops to threatened areas. Davis understood the concept of interior lines and was a consummate practitioner of concentration in space. He also understood the North 's vulnerability to defeat through a protracted war in which the population lost heart for the struggle. (Fischer, 778)
Centurion Cable Division must sell its advertising inventory at severely discounted rates to Northpark Media.
The North and the South both had to make extreme adjustments in order to prepare themselves for an all-out internal war. Both sides of this conflict grew from the same place. It was severely differing opinions and ideologies that caused the bloodiest war in American history. Most people believe that the Civil war was fought over the slavery enterprise, and they are partially right. The civil war did in fact have ties to opposition and the attempted removal of slavery in the United States, but that was not the only reason for this bloody and ill-fated War Between the States.
There's some important background to know about this movie. The book it's based upon is commonly given by management teams to employees to imply that they should shut up and accept the changes being imposed upon them - and not always for the better.
The beginning of the video opens up with “In medias res”. Logic is lying on the ground unconscious with smoke looming over her body. This informs the viewer that the surrounding area is in bad state and something went wrong. If the background you can hear a muffled version of “Killing Spree” which ends with a gunshot waking Logic up. After the gunshot the music for “Take it back” comes in and logic gets up begins to rap. Immediately after Logic walks by a black man getting arrested as two thug come up behind the cops and let the man free.
The movie “Boiler room” was a good example of the company, which doesn’t believe in such thing as business ethics.
The movie exposes the shabby working and living conditions of the Mexican-American community. It provides some historical background on how Hispanic rights were violated by white industrialists. The land where the mine is located was once owned by members of the local Mexican-American community, however the Zinc Company moved in, took over the property and offered them the "choice" of moving or accepting employment at low wage. Additionally, the workers are enticed to live in management-owned houses and buy at management-owned stores. The homes of the Hispanics are shacks compared to those of their white co-workers with poor sanitation and bad plumbing. The stores sell goods at inflated prices, which put the workers in debt.
Sexual harassment was a major problem for the women working in the mine. The men would write horrible slurs about the women in their locker room. Josey would always turn to her boss about the constant sexual aggression towards her. But her boss did not
