Queen Liliuokalani Lydia Kamakaeha was born into the Hawaiian Royal family on September 2nd, 1838. She had one older brother named David who would become the king and brother, James, who died early in life. After her youngest brother died, this left her being the heir to the throne after David would die. When David died of a kidney disease, Lydia was to take over the reign. Taking on the new name of Queen Liliuokalani, she was now the first woman to rule Hawaii and the last leader of the country. During her time as ruler, she created schools for the Hawaiian youth.
