Organizing Wal-Mart in Quebec Introduction The service sector is undergoing many challenges and crisis in recent years. Many trade/worker organizations are coming up globally. They act as mechanisms of expressing the workers’ rights to the employers or even to the national and state governments. However, many private companies and employers try to resist their employees from joining such organizations. The organizations mainly compose of members from the public sector, but they are now campaigning to woo members from the private sector. However, the campaign is not easy due to the resistant nature of most companies. The following is a case study example of Wal-Mart Company in Canada and the United Food and Commercial Workers. Background The union (UFCW), wanted to represent the company’s employees but, on the other hand, the company was against it. The company used aggressive tactics of praising their employees as …show more content…
However, in spite of the huge discrepancies in power and resources, I believe the workers still have many methods to challenge the company’s decision to remain union free. They can use the media and politicians to mobilize support from the citizens and hence put pressure on the company. They can also unite with other Wal-Mart workers and plan to all boycott work if their demands are not met. Wal-Mart has adopted a business model strategy of using low labor costs which is a threat to gains won historically by unions. It has also adopted a strategy of issuing threats to workers who support unionization. The strategy requires a company that honors its worker compensation policies to the latter. It means it will continue to hurt workers since the company has failed to honor workers compensation law policies. The compensation policies of the company do not match the strategy. The company has a very bad policy of delaying workers payments and
The concept of recognizing Quebec as a distinct society is an idea that has been kicking around for some time, but just what does it mean and what are its broader implications? This paper will examine the origins of the term, what it means, and its historical context. It will then examine rival interpretations of federalism. The essay will conclude with an in-depth examination of the concept's involvement with the failed constitutional accords and the failed Quebec succession attempts.
Quebec is a distinct nation within Canada and it is important for Quebec to remain this uniqueness by continuing to be a dominant francophone culture. With the decline of French population Quebec fears a loss for their language, culture and identity. Quebec has enforced a rule in terms of immigration to protect their culture. For example, Herouxville, Quebec has issued a code of standard to inform immigrants that they must leave their culture, ethnicity, and language behind and must adapt to Quebec culture. Quebec is struggling to maintain their provinces French language and culture. If Canada’s population continues to grow from immigration the government may enforce laws to lighten up the immigration law within Quebec allowing all minorities.
Walmart has the right to describe about the current benefits and job security they offer to their employees. They can also explain employees about how they are better than other unionised stores. They can also explain about the negative effects of unionising the store like strikes and job hour losses. They can inform them about the union fee employees has to pay if they join the unions. They can inform about the negative motives of people who run these unions. They can also explain them that the employees are treated as “associates” rather than just “employees” so it is duty of them to protect the best interests of the company.
There was a time when Quebec wanted to separate from Canada. Why would they? What would the downsides of Quebec leaving be? How drastic did people act when the period of separatism was going on? Keep reading and the questions will have answers.

Although Canada can be defined as a nation state, its vast landscape means many people are faced with different views and mindsets. Source one simply shows the differences within the nation of Canada. Eastern and Western Canada, because of their geographical differences, can be faced with contending loyalties when it comes to some nations aspects of life. Different lifestyles under the same set of government creates a physiological barrier between a nation. The source also shows the differences in Quebec nationalism compared to the rest of Canada. Some groups like the FLQ or the Front for Liberation of Quebec are known for their extremist views of Quebec nationalism. The small group called the FLQ was active in the 1960’s and 1970’s and they

This theory comes from the question what makes people satisfied and what do they value. Wal-Mart’s employees express their dissatisfied with their pay and benefits package. Most employees can’t afford or aren’t eligible to receive their healthcare package. Wal-Mart continues to feel the effects and consequences by having a high turnover rate with employees. Most of Wal-Mart’s turnovers are voluntary, leaving the cost to be substantial to Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart’s turnover rate is absolutely appalling. Approximately 70% of Wal-Mart employees quit outright within the first 12 months. This could be that Wal-Mart is openly against any kind of labor union within their organization and will stop at nothing to keep collective bargaining away. (Keil, 2005)
Unions not only in the United States, but around the world develop a voice for people who do not have the resources to fight major corporations for their rights that they deserve. However, organization much like the UFCW permit people the opportunity for a second chance to create a better life for their
Quebec has struggled with a need to be maitres chez nous “masters of their own house” (Young, 1998). Many attempts at resolving Quebec's issues has resulted in tensions from both sides. Because Quebec has a strong national identity, and do not define themselves as strictly Canadian, Quebec is seen as difficult, unyielding and discontented. Quebec's separation perhaps is inedible and the future of Canada questionable. Canada without Quebec will bring about many complications and whether there is a rest of Canada (ROC) after Quebec a major challenge. Western alienation and the lack of representation in federal affairs will be a factor; moreover, past actions and
Another point from the film that connects to the course is the question whether Walmart has “good’ jobs or “bad” jobs. Since Walmart does not have a union, the workers do not have any benefits, especially if they are working part time. One reason why Walmart does not want a union, because over some time, their wages and benefits and working conditions would be improved and their employees would have some say in what happens in the workplace and since Walmart can dictate what the salaries and profits are, they do not want that (Kirby, 2006). According to The Future of Work, a “good” job is one where benefits such as health, dental, life insurance and sick leaves are given.
As stated on the corporate website (2017), “Walmart is the largest retailer in the world, where 2.3 million associates meet the needs of more than 260 million customers every week.” These numbers are huge, and with so many locations around the globe, they have had allegations been made by employees regarding their dissatisfaction about poor work conditions, gender discrimination, low wages, poor benefits, and inadequate health care. Walmart has been criticized for its policies against labor unions and this issue has prompted public outrage, (Johansson, 2005) which is of great concern for the market. The company has also faced criticism for being anti-union, but it has claimed that it is rather pro-associate, whereby employees
“The complaint, filed with the National Labor Relations Board, alleges that Wal-Mart violated federal labor law by "bribing" employees to report on co-workers who favored a union.” (www.washingtonpost.com). But Wal-Mart denied the charges that were brought against the company. Thus, Wal-Mart is wrong by bribing employees for it encourages dishonest behavior. If Wal-Mart wants to avoid a hearing or a lawsuit in this situation, they need to post notices saying the retailer will not oppose employees talking to union representatives. In addition, if Wal-Mart takes more seriously the employees’ complaints, it might encourage them not to unionize.
A union is an organization of workers who join together in order to have a voice in improving their jobs and the quality of work within the organization. In many occasions, unions help employees of an organization negotiate pay, benefits, flexible hours and other work conditions that may arise. Unions have a role because some degree of conflict is inevitable between workers and management (Noe, 2003). In this paper, I will be discussing the impact of unions and labor relations within an organization.
Union does not only fight for the rights of Union members but for all workers and we have
