Ever since I was a child, I loved helping others. Whether it was helping my mother take care of my little brother or helping my fellow classmates with an assignment, I was always there to lend a hand. This passion continued throughout my childhood and into early adulthood. When I began my undergraduate degree at Lewis University, I knew I wanted to help people in some type of capacity. I was guided to the path of Social Work because in this field I could combine both my passion for helping others and interest in social justice. After my first day in the Introduction to Social Work course at Lewis University, I knew that I had found my forever home. This career path would allow me to help others in a variety of different settings and capacities. …show more content…
I plan to use my Masters of Social Work degree to work with children who have experienced abuse or domestic violence. I have already assisted in situations where children of witnesses or survivors of domestic violence during my field work. This population is challenging and every client’s case is different. Children are innocent and must have their rights protected despite their innocence and understanding. Working with this population takes patience and energy. I believe I have both of these traits due to my undergraduate education and field work, which have properly prepared me for this field. In particular, I have worked with a client who came to the Crisis Center for South Suburbia with seven children. The children had witnessed and even possibly experienced the domestic violence. This client case was the very first I was assigned to. In the beginning, it was quite difficult to help the children heal from the experiences they witnessed. The majority of the children were nonverbal and aggressive. I worked with the over the course of six weeks through group therapy. By playing with the children and gaining their respect, I was able to communicate with them effectively and assist them with life after leaving their mother’s abuser. This situation has given me experience and knowledge to assist children in similar situations in my future social work career. This population interests me simply because it is one that will unfortunately never go away. Due to this, children in abusive or domestic violence situations need professionals who will go above and beyond to advocate for them. I believe that I am one of these professionals. If accepted in Aurora University’s Masters of Social Work program, I plan to concentrate in child welfare. These are my professional aspirations for my future career as a social

With a master 's level education in social work, I see myself envisioning clients’ health and well-being. As a student, I will study and practice techniques, beyond a generalist perspective, that will allow me to give clients hope and the ability to see something greater than what they are facing. Upon completion of a Master of Social Work direct practice degree and certificates in gerontology and mental health programs, I intend to become a licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I will competently incorporate specialized skills in different professional settings while developing my knowledge of a wide range of social issues and professional standards. With commitment, I wish to develop skills that will enable me to create or find hidden resources and services for my future clients, create platforms through counselling for victims of trauma.
My interest in social work could date back to senior middle school. When seeing the news reporting primary school students’ life in Guizhou, I organized a donation in my grade to collect clothes and books for children living in the remote area of China. I managed to persuade all my classmates and teachers to join in, even when everyone was so absorbed in preparing for the University Entrance Examination. During carrying out this project, I felt so fulfilled and got to realize there was more I could do to help. That was when I decided to conduct charity work, but not until I chose social work as my major, did I recognize how I could realize my expectations in an empowering way.
Choosing to pursue this education to become a Social Service Worker has been a life long passion; living a so called “roller coaster” of a life and being subjected to many things, enjoyable and regretful has helped me in many ways to comprehend what it is to truly have human empathy and compassion for others. A veteran at life in its lowest and highest forms, and feeling completely alone and hopeless at times; being subjected to sexual and physical abuse, seeing what alcohol and drugs do to families, how poverty effects children and loved ones. Fortunately there were a few individuals that reached out, bring me up out of the darkness. This is something that I feel in my heart that needs to be given back, for me to provide someone the empowerment that others have given me, to show that there is hope and give reason to keep going, individuals who feel desperate, help to raise their chances, dreams and the basic needs of life. Having the knowledge of education to give these resources for expert referrals to assist people in desperate times, so they can live the life that is deserving and fulfilling to them, therefore this is my ultimate goal!
I have always known that it is my passion to help people. This is why upon graduating I attended Mohawk College to pursue a career as an Educational Assistant. After receiving my diploma I began my career helping children with special needs. On a daily basis I have interactions with social workers and children who are involved with the Catholic Children’s Aid Society. I have had many eye opening experiences during my time spent with them. I have worked alongside our school’s Social Worker and have gained insight into mental health. Being an E.A. is rewarding, but I have come to the realization that I aspire to do more for children in need; I wish to become a social worker.
Over the course of the past few years, I have been very blessed to have professional experiences that reinforced my interest in social work. In 2014, I worked as a guidance counselor and learning support intern at St. Pius Elementary school in Greensboro, North Carolina. In the guidance-counseling department, I assisted with counseling appointments with children in grades K-8. We often discussed topics
December 2016 I received my bachelors in social work. Through earning this degree I have learned so much more than I could have ever imagined. From all the papers, group projects, presentations, volunteer work, and field placement I not only grew as a future social worker, I grew as a student. Over the past two and half years, I learned to be a confident presenter, work as a team member, ask for help when needed, and stay true to myself. With that being said I have also seen my grades improve, writing skills improve, and people skills improve.
Many experts call social workers the “jack of all trades” of the modern society. This comes from the fact that these professionals assist their clients in almost every accept of life. For one thing, they promote good mental health since they can help patients with psychological conditions and substance abuse problems. They can also help in improving physical wellbeing since they can guide their clients to the right healthcare facility and assist them in obtaining financial help to fund their treatment. Of course, they can help people who are going through socio-economic difficulties by steering them to organizations who can best assist with their financial needs.
Being the secretary and a board member of the Human Services Club at Moreno Valley College has also influenced me to pursue social work. I had the privilege of working with social work professors and professionals throughout the last 3 years. The knowledge that I have gained from them has provided a reinforcement that social work is I want to do. My club advisor, James Banks, has also been a great influence and counselor. Every day, our experiences that we go through change us. We never stop evolving. Social workers never stop learning new strategies to help their clients. Taking each experience from each client and using it to help others
Indian nationalist leader Mahatma Gandhi once stated, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others”. This simple yet powerful quote motivates me to remain steadfast in the mission of aiding others. I’m pursing a Masters in social work because by working in this field, I can educate, advocate, motivate, understand, and encourage resilience to clients from every walk of life. It is a profession that will allow me to practice both on a micro and macro level simultaneously. Lastly, working in social work gives me the capacity to challenge policies affecting disadvantaged communities.
Starting from being a certified nursing assistant, to becoming a unit secretary for a hospital that specialize in wound care, I have always known that I wanted to help individuals in need. However, I noticed that I was not happy with helping individuals in medical need. It wasn’t until I decided to continue my education that I introduced to the world of social work. Going up with a single mother that suffered from drug abuse, my family depended on social services for a lot of assistance, from everything such as food stamps to family counseling. This life experience helped guide my thoughts on pursuing social work as a career. I know that I want to help individuals that are down on their luck, but I want to take it one step farther, by providing individual counseling to adults that may need more one on one time, than what is normally given from a social service agency. Counseling will also give me a chance to do what I love most and that is to talk and get to know the individuals that I am helping make like changing decisions. Working as a clinical social work has my interest because it does not put limits on what I can do or who I can help, and it will set me up for my future goal of becoming a licensed clinical social worker. Being my own boss and changing my community is my dream job, opportunity and goal. I am currently on my way with changing my community and living my dream, because I am currently working for a non-profit
I am in college for one reason and one reason only; to further my education and earn a degree. Coming to SBU has always been my dream, I have always had an appreciation for the fact that by attending this university I can get a Christian based education. Beginning my journey here at SBU I have already wrestled with deciding on a major. Upon my arrival I thought I was going into English Education and then soon after I arrived I had decided on Christian Ministry, but again decided that wasn’t right for me. That process is what has brought me to where I am today; pursuing a degree in Social Work.
I, Carlos Delgado, truly believe that my past and current work experience has served as preparation to pursue my master’s degree in social work. I am very aware that it takes plenty of hard work and dedication to be successful in a graduate program, yet I believe that my experiences along with my current work experience will assist me in gaining that success in a master’s program.
I plan on getting my degree in Sociology and climbing as far up the ladder as I can possibly climb. I want to work with children in the system, that have no voice. I volunteer for CASA (Court appointed special advocate) we stand up for the interest of a child who has experienced abuse or neglect. I plan on taking full advantage of the continuing education they have available which will help further advance my career. I am dedicated to helping families and children in any way I can and take great pride in doing so. We live in a culture where children are challenged with problems all the time. Regardless of what the problems may be, children need help developing skills to communicate effectively and strengthen their relationships. While most families can recognize that their children
Currently, I am a senior at San Jose State majoring in social work meaning I have a general idea of how time-consuming obtaining a social work degree can be. I am aware that class schedules, seminars, and field practicums are demanding and must be the main priority. My intentions are to get into the two-year master program on campus meaning that the first year will consist of two days of internship and the second year will have three days of internship along with that classes that will only be held in the day time. Although I am used to working full-time and being a full-time student, I know that is hard to manage in the MSW program. For the first time in five years, I am going to work part-time and delicate my weekdays for the only school
