I am in college for one reason and one reason only; to further my education and earn a degree. Coming to SBU has always been my dream, I have always had an appreciation for the fact that by attending this university I can get a Christian based education. Beginning my journey here at SBU I have already wrestled with deciding on a major. There are several goals that I hope to achieve by pursuing a graduate degree in Social Work. Pursuing a MSW will provide me with the knowledge, tools, and skills-set that will be fundamental to the achievement my career goals outlined below.
At this point in my life I feel that I am ready to begin to study for my career. For several years I have wanted to go back to school but wasn’t always one hundred percent sure what I was going to do. Through life experiences and working various jobs I am confident that Colorado Christian University will meet my needs as a student. I am also enthusiastic about attending classes such as Biblical Studies and Christian Leadership which will help me grow in my faith. I currently am teaching kindergarten Sunday School, and the biblical studies or Christian leadership class will help me in teaching the kids about The Bible. Social work involves passionate individuals who are dedicated to helping others by providing services to vulnerable children, families or individuals in need, while constantly looking for ways in which we can improve society. This discipline is dedicated to helping people find solutions to their problems in order to make the world a better place. I chose this field of study, because I find the job of a social worker rewarding. I have always enjoyed helping others and knowing that I have made a difference in someone’s life. It is no secret that this is a challenging career; however, the feeling of knowing that you made the world a better place is indescribable. I have simply decided to make my passion of helping others into a career. I know that in order to make my passion a career I will need to get the best education and training possible.

For as long as I can remember I have always wanted to pursue a career in social work. Helping others is something I have always been passionate about and I hope to be able to make a difference in the lives of those around me. Throughout my life, I have always been the person my friends would go to when something was wrong and they needed to talk. Growing up, I also experienced close family members struggle with addiction and mental health problems. I have seen how damaging these experiences can be on an individual. I have also witnessed the effects these experiences can have on family relationships. My personal occurrences have instilled in me a further desire to become a social worker.
The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is a national association of educational programs and individuals that confirms and improves the quality of social work education to become a professional job. CSWE puts in a countless amount of effort to strive for this mission by setting up a bachelor's and master’s degree programs in social work. On the other hand, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world, with approximately 132,000 members. To be more specific, NASW has a determination to intensify the maturity and developmental process of its members. The main goal is to retain professional standards and to create fair social policies. I dropped out of high school early and earned a GED because I had trouble coping with my mother’s addiction and its effects on our family. I have since sought professional help and I feel that I have been able to drastically turn my life around. My mother and I now have a good relationship and I am at peace with her and myself. Then, in 2012, I decided to turn my life around: I took the leap and went back to school.
Almost my whole life I have wanted to help people with their problems. I have always planned to be a psychologist. I attended Ashford University thinking that I was achieving my dream. It was my last year of school when I gained a deeper, spiritual relationship with God. It was then I stopped attending school not because my dream had changed but because I felt that I needed to help others but with biblical truth. Why is it that some citizens think that people who work in the field of social work does not need an education or a degree for it? Also, they think is all about having a good heart and a great deal of common sense. I believe that having these traits for this job is part of it since you do need some common sense and a good heart. There are many other requirements that are needed in this career for example psychological and sociology training among others, to be able to understand the differences of human cultures and their races.
Working in the Social Work field has been a great experience. I have learned how to access resource as well as provide my clients with beneficial information that helps them through their particular situations. Expanding my education in social work will allow me to expand my knowledge of the field while giving me the opportunity to be a better advocate for my community. Having a Master’s in Social Work will also give me the opportunity to explore different careers such as my focus as a potential school counselor.
Information the social worker gathers can help inform the rest of the client’s healthcare team, as well as inform them about how best to treat their illness, manage the disease, and even how they can best interact with the client. In our growing society we have to worry about our peers. We need to consider that there is going to be people just like us that needs someone to go to. I want be that person. Our senior year is coming to an end and we have to be prepared to become a freshman again. We have to make the choice to further our schooling or go straight into the working field. My chosen career profession in life is to become a social worker. My current study of field is Human Services in Child Welfare. This field requires one to be very professional as well as having many characteristics to be good at your job. One of the main characteristics one must possess is being organized. Being organized will help you succeed in this job field actually any job field. Besides the fact that you may be dealing with a heavy case load so you need to have everything in order this also includes having yourself in order. A social worker can’t come to work and plan on working with a client looking disheveled and messy. One must organize themselves as well as their work space.
This work is to give a brief overview of the history, qualifications, and expectations of social work education providers ranging from Associate Professors to Instructors. Included in this paper will be a story history, a look at the field currently, expectations and qualifications, and finally a short interview conducted with a Licensed MSW who has also gained a Doctorate of Educational Leadership in Organization Development. This work will also contain a brief look at the strengths and trends in the field.
