I have decided to write about myself even though I feel it's a tiny bit narcissistic. The artifact that I have created is my own literary work a book named "Purged: Cleansing of the Spirit" under my pen name Victory Hale. My book is an artifact because it is created by a human, it is literature and it serves no primarily functional purpose, it embodies creative expression. My book is about my life and times spent as a child living in poverty with two very abuse parents. The book grows up with me as I become an adult, mother to my children. It tells the tale of how I broke free from the abuse and all that had harmed me.
“A Spirit Reborn” is a well-known article published by the New York Times and written by William Safire. This New York Times columnist has written everything from novels and newspaper articles, mainly focusing on current events and political views, even presidential speeches. His titles have ranged from TV and radio producer, a publicist, a speechwriter, along with others. As a result he has been given many opportunities to discuss a wide range of topics, earning him prizes and even being quoted in a campaign ad for Ronald Reagan. Since the New York Times Newspaper is open to the public, it can be assumed the targeted audience for this article is U.S. Citizens troubled by the terrorist attacks that took place on September, 11 2001. Furthermore
“The Spirit Catches You” by Anne Fadiman inspired two theoretical perspectives to be analyzed through a social worker’s lens, the psychodynamic perspective and the social constructionist perspective. Each viewpoint is significant when exploring the experiences Lia Lee, her family, and those members of the community whom became stakeholders faced when dealing with Lia’s fatal illness. Analyzing the psychodynamic perspective on a micro level and the social constructionist perspective on a macro level, provides a better understanding for working with clients that endure the complex cultural dilemmas faced in this story. Therefore, examining these perspectives can assist with developing one’s own interventions and evaluate the ones used.
In the past ten years, the nonstop discussion and stress has been over the question of homosexuality. Are homosexuals to be excluded from the community of faith? Article writers, Richard B. Hays and Walter Wink explain their perspective and answer the ongoing talk.
"The three-step key to happiness when everything is down is - Redemption, Reconstruction, and Recover." Redemption, Reconstruction, and Recover demonstrate how the Reconstruction era prevailed. The Reconstruction era did redeem and reconstruct the United States but did not recover it. However, the United States still hasn't fully recovered because we still struggle with discrimination. For example, during the era, slaves were freed from slavery and received suffrage (the addition of 3 new amendments to the Constitution). But, the whites were not able to come to terms with the new Constitution. As a result, they continued to discriminate against the former slaves because of their new rights. Instead, we have to define the most important factor
In the reading, “Writing About Yourself: The Memoir” by William Zinsser, the author uses organization, examples, and direct advice to develop the purpose and message of the selection. The message of this piece is that writing about oneself and delving into what has made the author who they are gives the writing individuality and distinction. Like the message, the purpose is to encourage writers to write about themselves and what has shaped them without hesitation. To begin with, the author uses a pattern of organization where he introduces an excerpt of a memoir by stating a quality that makes this memoir exemplary. After the excerpt, he will further comment on what makes this memoir memorable for him. For example, the author states, “One secret of the art [the memoir] is detail… a sound or smell—as long as it played a
It is 7:11 on Friday night, the first of March 1996, in room 112 of Mercy Hospital in Portland, Maine. Married couple, Chris and Veronica Meserve of Steep Falls, Maine are welcoming their second daughter into the world, Shawna Irene Meserve. She will grow to be a physically and developmentally healthy being because of, among many factors such as her genetics, the circumstances and significant relationships surrounding her birth. Starting at the beginning of Shawna’s parents’ relationship, these circumstances and significant relationships surrounding this infant’s birth will be highlighted and analyzed to determine how they may have affected her very early development.
Giving an Account of Oneself, a compelling piece written by Judith Butler, digs deep into what it means to give an
For “Purgatory,” I had a hard time revising this piece due the numerous aspects of the story. Initially, I wanted this plot to work on the subtleties where a reader had to work to find the meaning instead of it being spoon fed. During workshop, there was mix reviews when it came to the amount of detail and description in the story. The most popular was the surplus of detail when it came to setting, and the lack thereof on the main character. I left the amount of detail as it was because I want the setting to be the strongest point of the story. I want the characters to work as pawns, with a focus of the university student due to her level development and relatability.
The horrifying pregnancy mortality rates and health disparities that exist between races are striking as well as terrifying to me. Although I was aware of the existence of health disparities, I was still taken back by the discrepancies in pregnancy-related mortality ratios of “12.7 deaths per 100,000 live births” in white women, to “43.5 deaths per 100,000 live births” in black women (CDC, n.d). Through root cause analyses, as well as reflection on the analogy provided in Levels of Racism: A Theoretic Framework and a Gardener’s Tale, it is clear that in order to effectively address and make positive change in the aforementioned ratios, we must focus on correcting institutionalized racism, personally mediated racism and internalized racism.
Baptism in (or with) the Holy Spirit is a very important, distinctive Christian experience in the life of the believer. The basis is found in the book of Acts, specifically the event of Pentecost.
shift in focus, from the puhunghoe focusing more on "moral and spiritual regeneration" to an emphasis on healing and miracles.
In ‘The Spirit Catches You And You Fall Down’, Lia, a Hmong baby girl, is born to a Hmong family living in California as refugees away from their war torn land in Laos. In Laos the Lee’s where farmers and lived in the country according to their Hmong traditions and beliefs. In California they barely understood the language, much less Western culture or medicinal practices. In Hmong tradition, illness was seen as a spiritual problem rather than a physical problem and a Shaman that practiced spiritual ceremonies and used natural remedies was sought to prevent or cure certain illnesses and/or diseases; so when Lia suffered her first seizure at the age of 3 months and was taken to Mercer
This week I have been struggling with centering my paper topic. I want to explore the use of psychedelics in spirit possessions. More specifically, I want to explore the validity of drug induced shamanistic experiences like in the case of Amazonian Shamans and their use of Ayahuasca. But I keep running into the problem of shifting my focus into something that doesn’t feel, at least to me, like topics of spirit possession. This is why I have devoted most of my research into attempting to define the type of spirit possession I am going to be talking about. I ran across an article by Emma Cohen that tackles this very task, she states that there are two main forms of possession. One is pathogenic which results “from the operation possession concepts result from the operation of cognitive tools that deal with the representation of contamination (both positive and negative); the presence of the spirit entity is typically (but not always) manifested in the form of illness.” The other is executive, this type of possession mobilizes “cognitive tools that deal with the world of intentional agents; the spirit entity is typically represented as taking over the host’s executive control, or replacing the host’s ‘mind’ (or intentional agency), thus assuming control of bodily behaviors.” For the purposes of the paper, I think that I am going to be using both models.
Writing about myself, is honestly the hardest thing anyone has ever asked me to do. My life has been filled with great opportunities; I have been able to see parts of the world; and meet some interesting people along the way. In doing so, seeing the world has given me a great perspective on myself, it
The Holy Spirit plays a very vital role in the lives of each and every believer; He can strengthen us with a strength that we cannot even begin to muster up in ourselves. He can bring us joy that we cannot even begin to find in the things of this world. He can bring peace to our lives more than anything that we can ever find on this earth. “The Holy Spirit which is primarily an energizing process, is also a revealing, refining, consuming, illuminating process, and one by which we are made to glow with love to God, and love to man, and love to souls.”
