I believe that school funding equality is very important. Public school funding comes from federal, state and local sources. The federal government has tried to come up with solutions to this problem. The fact that our schools are mostly funded by property taxes, more affluent taxpayers believe that the money should stay in their districts. Most Americans are unaware that other nations, do not fund public schools with local property taxes, rather they use general tax revenues to provide equal per student funding. American politicians always state that they are committed to the welfare of children, and the idea of equal opportunities. Therefore, we all need to unite to solve the problem and become more familiar with the facts and issues
Our children need to be treated Equal nothing should separate them. All children should be able to get the same education. No private schools, competition with other schools, standardized testing. Teachers should be reviewed and tested better and get better pay. Our school system needs to be more about equity. Students in America should be treated more like children. Have more play time, less homework and test. American children should never feel like they have to compete with one another. Money should never make one child education more important than the other. As a parent I feel my child deserves the best education. I shouldn’t have to pay 35,000 a year for my child to have a good education. My children should be able to get a great education in any public school. I should know that when my child walks into any public school that teachers have been well trained and have the proper education to teach my child. How can our students in America feel equal? So many school choices, competition and testing. How can a student learn if they are always worried about homework or a test? No child should ever be stressed out over school. Learning should be a fun experience, not
The United States is a country based on equal opportunity; every citizen is to be given the same chance as another to succeed. This includes the government providing the opportunity of equal education to all children. All children are provided schools to attend. However, the quality of one school compared to another is undoubtedly unfair. Former teacher John Kozol, when being transferred to a new school, said, "The shock from going from one of the poorest schools to one of the wealthiest cannot be overstated (Kozol 2)." The education gap between higher and lower-income schools is obvious: therefore, the United States is making the effort to provide an equal education with questionable results.
The formula budgeting approach is the method most commonly used by states, including Georgia, to determine K-12 educational funding levels for public schools (Green, 2014). This approach utilizes a fixed method to allocate funds and, as maintained by Green (2014), is intended to provide an objective, efficient, and equitable manner to distribute state education funds to local schools districts. However, as observed with Georgia’s own funding formula, this budgeting approach falls short when full funding is not provided. As a result, funding inequities do occur as local sources of revenue vary across the state.
I believe that the federal government should have more say in education system. Educational funding should have nothing to do with local tax dollars, especially the property taxes. Funding schools mainly through property taxes has made the education disparities among different areas worse and worse. The property taxes should be collected into a federal fund which will be distributed among schools according to student needs and school sizes. The federal government can also use this fund to expand or build more new schools in economically disadvantaged areas to reduce the school crowdedness and large class sizes. Another thing the government can do is hiring more qualified teachers by increasing salary and benefits to attract better
How many parents would like to send their children to a school that does not even have the resources to teach them appropriately? There are many schools that do not receive the funding they need in order for students to learn, while other schools have more than enough. Students in the lower funded schools are further behind and less likely to succeed compared to the students from the other schools. Therefore, all public schools should receive equal funding because all children deserve to have the same education and learning environment.
Conflict Theory states that there is an unequal distribution of resources between the “have” and the “have nots”. In the movie, there was an unequal distribution of school funds. For Malik to be able to attend Columbus University on a scholarship, he must run. If he doesn’t run, they will take his scholarship away and he can no longer go to school. Not only were there an unequal distribution of school funds, the privilege among the school seemed to be uneven too. Many of the white students at the school got away with disciplinary actions due to the color of their skin. Police on campus requested student ID’s from the black students on campus, even with familiar faces on familiar parts of them
The case study involves the allocation of school funds to employ three, possibly six, new personnel to assist a high school as it continues to grow as part of a recruitment effort. Being a fine arts magnet program, the school’s departments have varying needs and requests for the new positions. Specifically speaking, the fine arts department insists on adding a staff member, the science department needs a physics instructor, the music department wants to add an experienced strings professional, the English department has two members on the verge of retirement, and the athletic director requests two more coaches or he will resign. (Ubben, Hughes & Norris, 2011, p. 374)
The tax dollars are at work, but for whom, when it comes to education. Some can say, they do not think that their child is getting the best education, they can get from their school district. There is inequity in education because we are still divided, we have various advisory boards for the different races at school such as ELA (English learner Advisory) AAPA (African American Parent Advisory). It should be just a parent advisory in order for everybody to have the same learning achievement. As for inequality in education that is depending on the area, the school is located, I do not see the schools in the upper-class neighborhood complaining that their kids are not getting the best education. The negative consequences of this social problem are that there are children being left behind, retention in grades, suspension, and expulsion (Musu-Gillette, Robinson, McFarland, KewalRamani, Zhang, & Wilkinson-Flicker, 2016). The importance of changing this problem is so we can make sure our children are ready to lead the country when the time comes and make the best decision for us all as it relates our nation and politics. The equity in education is a problem and it needs to be changed through prevention measures, society, and reform.
It is just as important for students who are ready to take on additional academic challenges should have the opportunity to excel, while those who are historically underserved to deserve the extra time and attention that they needed for untroubled problems. “No teacher should have to worry about not being able to provide the most basic resources for their students”(NY Times). This shows that teacher who are having less resources will not be given the proper education to their students like other children who are capable of having enough resources. “However, I do believe that increased funding for high-quality resources, mental health services for at-risk students, and continued teacher development would absolutely improve urban education”(NY Times). Having to work together as a school, community to get better resources will better the students and be able to have a metabolism to love learning and to keep doing on what they do. Being able to have funding for schools are giving the chance for students to have more resources and for not having the risk of them dropping out of school. “A classroom of 35-plus students without books is hardly a learning environment, especially when compared to suburban and private schools where the average class size is 20 students and resources are plentiful”(NY Times). Seeing how many school environments do not have the resources they need they are mostly compared with those who have enough money to pay for supplies such as books, notebooks, technology, etc. students should have the ability to be provided with the same level of education and supplies to get a understanding of the
Today, however, it seems as if the public has lost track of the importance of a great educational system. The main issue today’s public schools faces are funding problems. There is not enough money allocated to support the growing needs of school across the nation.
There is an abundance of importance in the public school system. Most successful careers start with elementary, middle and high school education. So it is safe to say it is vital to maintain a major funding for all public school’s systems across the country. Of course funding isn’t the only broken piece of a perfect school system because not every school is in an appropriate environment. There are many factors that follow what type of funding each school gets and also how much. Many schools are placed in low income or areas in poverty, this causes students to have harder learning environments. The question is what would be a strategy to fix the gap in public school funding and where and how do you spend it? This could be solved by smart public school allocation, better pay structure for
Underfunding of public schools in the United States is only hurting our future. There is a disparity of funding by our state governments to different cities. Budget cuts have made it hard for many schools to effectively educate our students. Classrooms have become overcrowded due to a higher student to teacher ratio. We are spending less on each individual student per year in lower income areas denying opportunities to children who are born there. Education is the foundation of our lives, increasing the funding of our school systems is an investment in the future of America.
It has long been a question on whether or not schools are funded equally, but as people have come to see they definitely are not funded equally and fairly. With the introduction of policies like Race to the Top and No Child Left Behind, funding has become more of a prize for doing well on standardized tests. When in all fairness, funding should be given to schools who need it the most and find themselves in the poorest of communities.
The sad reality of it all is that gross funding inequities continue to persist in the U.S and no one seems to be working steadily to rid this problem. When putting funding into education equity should be focused on rather than equality. According to the National Report card there are core fairness principles that must be followed to maintain equal opportunity. The 3rd principle states that the level of funding in a district should increase relative to the level of concentrated student poverty rate. Therefore state finance systems should provide more funding to districts serving larger share of students in poverty (Is School Funding Fair? 7). Examining the school district of Philadelphia one could see that this principle is not being followed. The No Child Left Behind Act was created in 2001 to ensure that no later than 12 years after 2001 (2013) all students will meet the states standards. The act
Funding for schools, especially in the urban schools, have not allowed the district to properly distribute the money. The money does not reflect what is needed to educate properly. The reason for less funding for urban children is because schools receive funds based on taxes, even though the state funds the same amount per student. Due to the low taxes in the urban cities the schools are not funded that well. Absence of needed funding is shown through the quality of teachers that are hired. Teachers in the urban
