Around the world there has been many problems with the education achievement gap. In the United States many students are facing different realities in school because of wealth or being less advantaged. Many fail to build a capacity and love for knowledge or their desire to increase the opportunities to learn. Students should have the ability to access a learning environment in a school with qualified teachers and also in their homes and in their communities. The one solution that can be effective to close the gap would be everyone to receive equal education, and where everyone receives the same equal opportunities to all races, and to expand on school capacitation of teachers and resources available to be equal as well.
A problem that is

It is just as important for students who are ready to take on additional academic challenges should have the opportunity to excel, while those who are historically underserved to deserve the extra time and attention that they needed for untroubled problems. “No teacher should have to worry about not being able to provide the most basic resources for their students”(NY Times). This shows that teacher who are having less resources will not be given the proper education to their students like other children who are capable of having enough resources. “However, I do believe that increased funding for high-quality resources, mental health services for at-risk students, and continued teacher development would absolutely improve urban education”(NY Times). Having to work together as a school, community to get better resources will better the students and be able to have a metabolism to love learning and to keep doing on what they do. Being able to have funding for schools are giving the chance for students to have more resources and for not having the risk of them dropping out of school. “A classroom of 35-plus students without books is hardly a learning environment, especially when compared to suburban and private schools where the average class size is 20 students and resources are plentiful”(NY Times). Seeing how many school environments do not have the resources they need they are mostly compared with those who have enough money to pay for supplies such as books, notebooks, technology, etc. students should have the ability to be provided with the same level of education and supplies to get a understanding of the
The achievement gap is defined as the disparity between the performance groups of students, especially groups defined by gender, race/ethnicity, ability and socio-economic status. The achievement gap can be observed through a variety of measures including standardized test scores, grade point averages, drop out rates, college enrollment and completion rates. The Black-White achievement gap is a critical issue in modern society’s education system. Although data surrounding the issue clearly indicates that the racial performance gap exists in areas of standardized tests, graduation rates, dropout rates, and enrollment in continuing education, the causative reasons for the gap are ambiguous—therefore presenting a significant challenge in
Ravitch?s discussion on ?achievement gaps? points out that African American students academic scores have progressed remarkably since 1990 to 2011. She also states that the Hispanic and Asian have progressed as well. Achievement gaps will continue to be an issue, as long as there are different races, ethnic groups, the poor and the wealthy. The more disadvantaged one is, is going to lack in education and prosperity. To solve an issue like the achievement gap, we need to take action and begin at the root. These children are suffering because lack of proper education in the school system, which stems from the poverty in the segregated neighborhoods. Low income
How should society handle the perceived differences between races when it comes to education? The goal of both researchers is to narrow the academic gap between white and black students. Both authors attribute the gap between the academic scores of black and white students from opposite sides of racial identity. As Dr. Beverly Daniels Tatum, President of Spelman College and clinical psychologist has written an article entitled “Why are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” Her approach is from the perspective of the student and how they perceive their role and upper limits while maintaining their place in their peer group's expectations of their race. Dr. Diane Ravitch, a research professor of education at New York University, has written an article entitled "The Facts about the Achievement Gap.” Her approach is from the perspective of how schools and society implicitly or explicitly cast students into achievement tracks based on their race. Both approach the same idea about racial identity, but they have different solutions, such as peer groups, the school board, and who is right about the solution.
The “achievement gap” in education refers to the disparity in academic performance between groups of students. The achievement gap is shown in grades, standardized-test scores, course selection, dropout rates, among other success measures. It’s most often used to describe the troubling performance gaps between African-American and latino students, towards the lower end of the performance scale, compared to their white peers, and the similar academic differences between students from low-income families and those who are privileged. In the past decade, scholars and policy makers began focusing their attention on other achievement gaps, such as those based on sex, English language and learning disabilities.
In the article "The Black-White Achievement Gap: When The Progress Stopped," NAEP (the National Assessment of Educational Progress), discusses the past 45 years and how children in the black community have still not met the same success as their white counterparts. Not only has education been lacking in the black community but socio-economic growth and interpersonal relationships have seen a downward trend with little to no progress. Moreover, the resources available to higher income white children and low income black children is a stark difference. Focus on change has been slow. Progress to narrow the black-white achievement gap must be met with strong economic support not just from the government but from within the community.
The racial achievement gap is a highly talked about issue within education in the United States. It refers to the differences in standardized test scores between black students and white students. Even though this issue is still prevalent today, it has improved greatly from the past. Ever since Brown v. Board of Education, where the supreme court ruled that it was unconstitutional for schools to be racially segregated, the racial achievement gap has become smaller. However, it still exists which has led many people to wonder why and design experiments to figure out what could be causing it. The racial achievement gap is a big issue because it shows that black students are falling behind in school which can lead to them not going to college or dropping out. It is also an issue because all students deserve to have an equal education and they should all have a chance to succeed in life. In order to fulfill equal education for everyone, the reasons for the achievement gap need to be found and fixed. Some people have already investigated independent variables that could impact the achievement gap such as personal faith, self-affirmation, and students schoolmates. However, not many experiments have been done to test the impact of unequal spending per pupil on the racial achievement gap. In this paper, an experiment will be designed to investigate the possible effects it has on the gap with a hypothesis that the unequal spending increases the achievement gap.
When the conversation about achievement gap is broached, it is often offensive towards minorities. Mainly because it implies that you’re acknowledging the fact that there is and achievement difference among their race and Whites. Personally I have no problem with the term because it is factual. It’s what school officials are not doing to close this gap that i have a problem with The achievement gap is sustained by poor school management and teaching—not other social or cultural factors. In order to close this gap among students, school officials must better prepare teachers, implement a common core curriculum, and encourage positive teacher-student relationships.
The education experts proved that this gap had a negative impact on the students of the new generation as most of them tend to believe that this gap couldn 't be changed and that their life success and learning will be depending on their social status, race or gender. This gap not only affects students, but also affects everyone in the community as the academic achievement is linked to some problems like lower life time earnings, an increase dependence on social services and increase rate of crimes. Education experts believes that the only way to solve this gap issue is by the help of the community as the whole not just the help of the schools and teachers.
There is a persistent achievement gap that has continually taken place within the educational system that needs to be secured. The National Center For Educational Statistics indicates, “gaps appear when one group of students out performs another group and there is a statistical difference in scores” (NEA, 2014). There is statistical evidence exhibiting gaps in performance between white students and their black and Hispanic counterparts in math and reading. Efforts to reach equivalence should start at home during early childhood and continue throughout the high school years (NCES, 2011).
In conclusion, after reviewing the case study, the grant can be used to assist the institution in establishing new systems to track student success in learning communities. The achievement gap model is a great tool for identifying, understanding, designing, implementing, assessing, and revising the current problems affecting student achievement at community colleges. This model should be utilized in evaluating current trends. I believe that by implementing the study in the early registration process will allow the tracking of students’ experiences during the semester. This process should begin with each cohort from enrollment to graduation. As the leader in this case study, I believe that the democratic, ethical, and data decision-making
The child achievement gap has been an important issue for the United States school system. According to the NEA, child achievement gaps are, “differences in academic performance between students of groups with different backgrounds”. Now with the topic of charter schools and the belief that charter schools are more likely to accept students who are easier to teach and suspend students who are a nuisance to teach, the reason why achievement gaps exists has just gotten broader. Many critics, such as Marcus A. Winters, claims that charter schools are proving that, “education reform can work with even the hardest-to educate students: students with disabilities and students learning English are more likely to remain in charters than in traditional
The future generations in America will most likely not be better than the current generation and our predecessors if we do not act now. Every year, the high school dropout rate increases and standardized test scores decrease also. Furthermore, the nation’s Common Core Standards have not been changed for about a decade. Students will become more passive than active every year if this does not stop. Also America will soon not be able to solve future challenges caused by the world or other nations. The nation’s education should be more advance than before, to ensure that America will always be great.
The Back White Achievement Gap: When the Progress Stopped focuses on the educational gap such as school achievement, contextual factors and educational attainment between Black and White during the early 20s and present time. Also gives theories that may be causing this educational gap to become a problem. This paper will first discuss the theory then I will tell why this is the reason.
The problem concerning the current education achievement gap is the disparity between rich and poor because the rich have more money and time to spend money on their children education while low income parents might not have the money to spend on their children education. Evidence from the text states that “wealthy parents invest more time and money than ever before in their children (in weekend sports, ballet, music lsso s, math tutors, and in overall involvement in their children’s schools), while lower- income families, which are now more likely than ever to be headed by a single parent, are increasingly stretched for time and resources” the most logical conclusion we can draw from this evidence is that parents with a lower income dont have the same opportunity as parents with a high income to put their children in different clubs, sports and overall involvement in their children school. Families with a higher income are able to afford their
In today's world when you walk in to a classroom you will most likely see that the environment is basically the same as when you were in school, a chalkboard, desks, colorful bulletin boards, and perhaps computers. However, in today's classrooms the student population may not look as it did when you were a child, the classrooms of today consist of many different children, some white, some African American, some students may be from other countries and some may have a disability. Despite the students looking different the teacher most likely looks the same, a white female, middle class with little experience working with students from other cultures. In fact, white female teachers make up between eighty-five to ninety percent of the teaching profession. (Lowenstein 2009).
