Psychology is the science or study of the thought process and behavior of humans and other animals by their interactions with the environment.(The Columbia Encyclopedia,2015) Studying sense perception, thinking, learning, cognition, emotions and motivation, personality, abnormal behavior, interactions between themselves and the environment are all vital to the interpretation of Psychology.(The Columbia Encyclopedia,2015) With the formulation of the Hypothesis, based on casual observations, a systematic scientific testing procedure begins in order to obtain a resolution or determine if further test needs to be done.Psychology is considered to be a science in that it has many disciplines organized around them. Also data collection through “observation and measurement, using scientific research methods, and the researched gathered in a controlled approach by sifting through all the information to derive all the descriptive, and measurable data needed for justification of the hypothesis” realizing that results might vary due to different variable.(Feist & Rosenberg, 2015, p.6) Between the 14th and 17th centuries, studies of the mind and brain were rejuvenated, where the attention was shifted to the behavior and anatomy of humans, from animals.(Dwyer, 2012) French philosophers Rene Descartes and Baruch Spinoza had similar Hypotheses saying that mind and body influenced each other or had influence from the same stimuli . In Europe in the 17th century, madhouses were developed to
Psychological research describes investigations psychologists undertake in order to review and analyse a specific hypothesis, (a theory about the relationship between defined variables). Research allows theories to be confirmed, amended or rejected and often leads to further research as requirements evolve. Psychological research can take many forms, from laboratory based experiments to non-invasive viewing of subjects in their own environment. This research can take place using human or non-human subjects and the analysed results applied to human behaviour or experience within many disciplines including, education, legal or occupational.
Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior of human beings. Some areas
Psychology can be defined as the discipline concerned with behavior and mental processes and how they are affected by an organism’s physical state, mental state, and external environment.
Psychology is a discipline that involves monitoring mental processes and behaviour scientifically. Psychologists try to delve into the basic functions of a person and animals cerebral activity. This usually involves studying relationships, emotions, personality and many more areas of a person or animals day to day life. Psychology tends to steer towards finding reasons for a person or animals actions in an attempt to resolve them.
Psychology is the science of different types of behavior. Psychology is not the science of the human mind. Different behaviors can be described and explained without making reference to mental events or to internal psychological processes. The sources of behavior are mainly external, and not internal. Research in psychology seeks to understand and explain thought, emotion, and behavior. Applications of psychology include mental health treatment, performance enhancement, self-help, ergonomics, and many other areas affecting health and daily life.
Psychology is the scientific study of the behavior of individuals and their mental processes. (Fuchs & Milar, 2002). But what makes it a scientific study? First of all, why not? Nowadays the idea of psychology as a science seems so natural to us, but it was not always like this.
Psychology is a science because it involves empirically testing concepts and observations of behavior and mental process. Psychology uses systematic methods to observe human behavior and draw conclusions on their findings. The main goals of scientific psychological studies is to predict, explain, and describe behavior. Those in the field only scientifically test concrete concepts based on previous research or assumptions. The overall process of the scientific method involves making a hypotheses, deriving predictions from them as logical consequences, and then carrying out experiments based on those predictions. A hypothesis is a conjecture, based on knowledge obtained while formulating the question. “Debate and controversy are a natural part
Psychology is defined by Merriam-Webster, as the science of mind and behavior. It is a study of how an individual's psyche can be created, developed, altered or destroyed. Carol Gilligan, a Harvard Graduate School professor, for many years has analyzed the psychological theory and development, specifically in a book entitled In A Different Voice.
Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes (Feldman, 2013, p.5). The simplistic definition is actual very complex, as it includes a persons thought, emotions, perceptions, reasoning process, memories, and their biological activates that maintain their bodily functions (Feldman, 2013, p.5). Psychologists use the scientific method in order to describe, predict, and explain human behavior (Feldman, 2013, p.5). This is done to achieve an understanding of what or why a person does what they do, in order to help people improve their lives, with out the need for speculation.
Psychology is a term derived from two Greek words that translate to life explanation, which makes it an important element of daily life. The field of psychology can be described as a discipline that focuses on the study of mind and behavior. This discipline is characterized by several concepts and approaches that are used by psychologists in understanding human behavior. Since psychology is a broad field, psychologists not only use these concepts and approaches but also conduct scientific research that enables them to understand human behavior. Some of the most common psychological concepts that are used to modify or change an individual’s behavior include operant conditioning, positive and negative punishment,
Psychology is a discipline that studies the mind and behavior. We hear about psychology through self-help book, self-help mentors, and talk shows. Many students enter this field of psychology with some knowledge. In the fall and winter of 1975 students in an introductory psychology class were given a test known as the “Test of misconception” students were asked to listen to each statement and answer them by answering true or false only, statements such as “To change people’s behaviors towards members of ethnic minority groups we must first change their attitudes.” (Vaughan 1977) These practices use some mental strategies to improve ones over all well-being. “These particular misconceptions seem to have been effectively dispelled in this group of students. However 15 out of 23 items showed little change in either direction, despite the fact that most of them we dealt with materials dealt in books” (Vaughan 1977)
Professions are never alike and rarely share like core value and core goals. Most professions were born out the need to help people and some professions were created to make money off peoples ' pain, sorrow, and inner most feelings. The field of psychology was created to understand human behavior to help make society a better place and people live much easier. Psychology is field with sub fields that differ but the underlining core values are the same. The path to becoming a psychologist is challenging and not easy but most people entering the field feel like it is their calling.
The actual Science of Psychology is much defined, to some it may see that psychology is someone sitting on a couch and a Psychologist asking those questions about their life. This may go on aimlessly for an hour at a time visit after visit. Yet even with this scenario there is a very detailed scientific methodology behind the process. These systematic approaches are used to observe, predict, describe and explain what responses may be expected. The basis for this is found in the Scientific Method which utilizes four main steps: 1. Conceptualize the problem 2. Collect research information 3. Analyze data 4. Draw Conclusions. This systematic approach to psychology mimics the same approach many scientists utilize and fields of research around the world today. Building on the concept to generate a theory and testing through research then developing a hypothesis. These steps are how psychologist’s today made many of the new discoveries and advances in their fields of research. Through many types of test’s, controlled experiments, case studies and research we can define Psychology as a science of
Psychology is the scientific study of actions and behaviors. Psychologists often form hypotheses and test these through studies and research. They carefully follow the scientific method to gather data. The research methods used by psychologists vary by branches of study. These methods include controlled laboratory experiments, and personality, intelligence, aptitude, or performance tests. Other methods of research are interviews, observations, questionnaires, surveys, and clinical studies.
Psychology is a study of mind and behavior. Psychological research is mostly focused on the relationship between thought, behavior and emotion; how one influences the other and what are the consequences of such interaction. Put simply, psychology is a field associated with the drive to understand the way human mind works. The topic is slightly enigmatic, but at the same time very challenging and complicated. Where representatives of the exact sciences depend on data, facts and figures, psychologists tend to rely on behavior. Seeing that the majority of work done by psychologists is
