Psych 106 : Developmental Psychology Term Paper

There are three main theories of development that I shall discuss in this assignment, 'Cognitive', the main theorist being, 'Piaget', (1896 - 1980), The, 'Psychosocial Theory', 'Erikson', (1902 - 1994), and, The 'Psychosexual', of, 'Freud', (1856 - 1939).

Psychology is diverse, and there are many diverse specialty areas available to individuals seeking a career in the field of psychology. Most Psychologists choose to specialize in subfields that focus on specific subjects. Obtaining a profession in any of the specialty areas would require graduate study in that area of interest. Some professionals have a broad general knowledge, are skilled in several areas, and work with a range of clients. Some are specialist in treating a specific type of psychological disorder, or work with a specific age group. For those interested in specializing in a psychology career, developmental Psychology is one of the many fields available.

Developmental psychology recognizes three main models of psychosocial and cognitive development. The first theory, presented by developmental psychologist and philosopher Jean Piaget, addresses cognitive development. The second theory, presented by psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg, focuses on the development of morality. The third theory, proposed by developmental psychologist and psychoanalyst Erik Erikson, outlines psychosocial development. All three theories are applicable from birth to death.

Developmental theories state that an individual's propensity to crime is an ebb and flow over the course of their lives (Bohm & Vogel, 2011). These theories, often referred to as “life theories” are based on a person’s individual development (Bohm & Vogel, 2011). Developmental theories also argue that there are other factors which influence an individual’s likelihood to commit crimes (Bohm & Vogel, 2011). These theories also assert that although there may be a significant or influential factor in an individual’s life at one point in time, that same factor may not have any significance or importance at a different stage of their life (Bohm & Vogel, 2011).

Sternberg's Theory of Love describes three components that make up different combinations or levels of love that can be shared between two people. The three components are intimacy, passion, and commitment. Intimacy refers to understanding and concern for the other person. This component deals with warm affection and getting to know each other on a deeper level. Passion refers to stronger feelings of emotion,

Madeline Palumbo 05/04/2015 Child Development-Movie Paper The Little Rascals, a film made in 1994, depicts the story of boys from ages of 3 to 6, attempting to maintain their title as box-car derby champions all while continuing their oath to hate women. The main characters, Alfalfa and Spanky, two best friends, who have opposite opinions on women. The story begins with the boys meeting in the club house to discuss the derby, while Alfalfa is out on the lake with his love, Darla, discussing their love for each other.

All my high school career I have been working hard to be able to accomplish my goal of going to college. I plan on continuing my hard work in college so I can achieve great things there too. I hope to be able to learn a lot about the field of psychology in my undergraduate studies. I want to be able to specialize in the study of developmental psychology so that I can work with children and adolescents in the future.

Developmental psychology is “a branch of psychology that studies physical, cognitive, and social change throughout the lifespan” (Myers 2014), and human goes through development by series of continuity and stages. With humans, the processes starts with conception, where male sperm fuses with female egg, and then the newly formed cell goes through prenatal development, where rapid cell division occurs to form the embryo. After 9 months, the embryo developed into the fetus, where it has a physical form of a human.

In the textbook titled Invitation to the Life Span, authored by Kathleen Berger, explains Robert Sternberg's theory of love. Sternberg's theory has three parts which are passion, intimacy, and commitment. When all three are present, it is perfect love and an ideal that is sometimes attained (Berger, 2014, p.475). I agree with Sternberg's theory of love because I believe people look for these three notions of love to share with someone because they seem to work in unison.

Development psychology refers to the scientific study of the systematic psychological changes that normally occur to human beings throughout their growth period from birth to old age. It was originally concerned with children and infants, but it has since expanded to include the entire life span of mankind including adolescence and adulthood. Development psychology covers the extent to which human development occurs through gradual accumulation of knowledge, and the extent to which children born with inmate mental structures learn through experience. Several psychological theories and approaches like the behavioral, humanistic, psychoanalytic, biological, and cognitive approaches have been developed to explain the

Erik Erikson Defined intimacy as the “capacity to commit … and to develop ethical strength to abide by such commitments, even though they may call for significant sacrifices or compromises” (Erikson, 1965, p. 255). Failure to commit to an intimate relationship may lead to have feelings of isolation (Corney, 2005). Erikson called this instantiation and defined it as “the readiness to isolate and, if necessary, to destroy those forces and people whose essence seems dangerous to one’s own” (Erikson, 1965, p. 256). Erikson describes love as an intimate relationship with a member of the opposite sex with whom one shares trust, reproduction and relaxation.

This week we will explore applicability of developmental psychology to improve our everyday life. In order to do that I have read chapter 9 and watched TED Talks on developmental psychology by Jane McGonigal and Dan Gilbert. All information that I listed I find very interesting for my self because it is everyday life which is start from prenatal development tile our death. It is all about development such as how we make our decisions every seconds because we are builders of our lifespan. Also, I have watched few lessons by Crash Course Psychology such as language, power motivation, the growth of knowledge, monkeys, morality, adolescence.

Developmental Psychology has widened my perspective and knowledge of the nature of development from humans’ infancy to adolescence and emerging adulthood. Although I have learned about biological, cognitive, and socioemotional processes and periods of development, I am especially interested in socioemotional development in infancy because it is the foundation for a child’s future development. That is to say, if children have a healthy socioemotional development from infancy, they will have a healthy life later on. By understanding the developmental process in infancy, I will be fully prepared when I have children or when my family’s members do.

Leading up into the class I was both bit nervous and excited, since this was the first time in years that I haven’t taken a class outside of my particular major. As I was going through the course schedule, I had in my mind that I did not just want to take any old class just because I need it to graduate. So I came across developmental psychology and thought to myself that this would be a good fit because I enjoy learning about other people. Once class started, I was a little confused about how it the class was going to be, since I already had the thought in my head that I was going to be learning about people older in age. After understanding more about what I was going to learn from this class, I became much more excited because this is actually affecting me in my personal life now, as my wife is pregnant and due in December. I thought this was a great pre baby learning experience for myself, since each week I had the ability to learn everything from development, prenatal development, physical development, intelligence, temperament and attachment, gender role development, and development of the family.
