“To propose a physical activity intervention at the University of Roehampton” Mishal, Sarahleen, Yamikani, Albird, Cristina, Yasmin, Michelle, Hajar Introduction: Insufficient physical activity is one the leading risk factors for global mortality. Physical activity not only contributes to wellbeing, it is essential for good health. Increasing physical activity levels can help prevent or manage many conditions and diseases; this includes coronary heart disease, diabetes, some cancers and obesity along with improving mental health. According to World Health Organisation (WHO), physical activity is any bodily movement by muscles that requires energy expenditure. Aims: • To discover issues related to physical activities • To explore some opportunities for physical activity already available in the area • To find out solutions of the issues related to physical activities • To generate ideas that will encourage people to take part in physical activity Objectives: • To investigate through different articles from NHS and WHO, the levels of physical activity necessary for different age groups • To look at different journals to find out how physical activity can be increased • To identify sources which tell us about different issues of people • To create a survey for public to attain knowledge about their level of physical activity, issues and preference. • To recognise different sources which can help in formulating solutions in order to encourage people to perform physical
The problem identify at the facility New Community in Newark, New Jersey is the lack of exercise programs in the community. In addition, there is a lack of participation among the patients that are physically capable to join in the daily exercises. The facility has an exercise program that they offer, but the patients are reluctant to participant during the times they offer it. The patients have stated that they are unable to perform the exercises or the exercises are uninteresting.
The significance for this research project is that it will provide relevant and up to date data of the current levels of physical activity within Australian adults. This project will deliver an in-depth analysis of the frequency, quantity, duration, and variety of physical activity among Australians. It will also provide information about what factors are promoting a healthy lifestyle and what barriers are preventing adults from achieving the recommended weekly levels of physical activity. The research will address:
An exercise intervention could be used especially because people who are depressed feel a sense of worthlessness (as in the definition of depression, DSM-V ) . A pilot study by Nadine McGale et al (2011) investigated the effectiveness of a team-based sport with an individual exercise and a control condition of young men. This study included a 10-week randomized control trial and an 8-week post intervention follow-up. A group of 104 sedentary males (exercise once or less per week) aged between 18 and 40 years were randomly assigned to the three groups namely the team-based sport, individual exercise and the control group (that received no intervention). The participants completed the Becks Depression Inventory- 2nd

Globally, around 31% of adults aged 15 and over were insufficiently active in 2008 (men 28% and women 34%). Approximately 3.2 million deaths each year are attributable to insufficient physical activity (WHO, 2013). Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that require energy expenditure (WHO, 2013). Physical inactivity is estimated to be the main cause for approximately 27% of those who have diabetes (WHO, 2013). In order to globally take control over this worldwide epidemic of type 2 diabetes, physical activity needs to become a daily activity in each and everyone’s lives. Physical activity is extremely important as it helps keep blood glucose, blood pressure, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides in check. It helps lower the risks of type 2 diabetes (WHO, 2013).
Changes in behaviour and lifestyle of the people in the last century, especially in industrialized countries caused that it is needed for many people to participate in PA. Quality of life and physical inactivity are related to long-life and diseases (Bouchard, C., Blair, S. N., and Haskell, W. L. 2012). Nowadays people are spending long time sitting in one place; it is related to our work (call centre, bank, reception etc.) and lifestyle, so it is important to get the people being active to stay well, both mentally and physically.

Our third week of the physical activity intervention has been the most successful so far out of the first two weeks. My group members and I were able to obtain much more data on student’s height and weight in the third week due to class rosters that were given to us by Ms. Moser to easily find and organize students in their physical activity class. My group members and I are doing well in our intervention and we met up to discuss on how our research project is going along and how everyone is doing in their part of the project. My group members and I only have one more week for the intervention, so a challenge for the last week of the intervention would be to promote and motivate the students to continue their engagement in physical activity after the program is over. If my group members and
