As a child diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, I understand that a fair and inclusive education are the greatest devices students have for upward mobility. I struggled to reach my potential as a student until I started college. There my enthusiasm for secondary education emerged. My experiences ultimately set me on a path to become an educator. As a teacher, I have many students that experience the same struggles I did as a child. However, I know the other challenges students, teachers, and administrators face each day. I have seen the consequences of income inequality and the achievement gap. At this stage in my professional career, my goal is to advance my education to further serve the needs of students who are disenfranchised. I am applying for my master in educational leadership to pursue my life mission: to make education in the state of Indiana accessible to all students.
I prepared for this mission by getting my B.S. in history and secondary education from Manchester University. During my first two years, I struggled to adapt to the demands of being a full-time student athlete. However, as my course load became more focused my academic achievement improved. Evidence of this can be seen not only in my transcripts, but in a project I co-wrote being selected for “best quantitative research” at “Manchester University’s Fourteenth

I am motivated by working with students who are impacted by a cycle of poverty. I have established high expectations and analyzed student data to combat the achievement gap. Differentiation has been at the forefront of my instruction to meet the needs of all my students regardless of race, gender or academic ability. I have attained professional development seminars on cultural competency to ensure I am an equitable educator. However, it is important that I continue to pursue my educational and professional’s goals to achieve my
“I Know This Much is True” by Wally Lamb is a deep book about twin brothers who grow up together but are much different in their personality. Dominick takes the role of the more dominate or “manly” brother who loves to get dirty and horse around. Thomas on the other hand likes to play pretend with his mom and is always taking the safe way through everything. As the story progresses Dominick becomes a caretaker of Thomas from when they both go off to college. Thomas starts being paranoid all the time and is not able to work. He thinks people are out to get him because he says he is the messenger of god. Thomas then gets diagnosed with schizophrenia, a brain disorder that can lead you to see or hear things that aren’t actually there.
I am intrested in gaining my Masters (MS) in Psychology to extend my knowledge within this field and make an impact in society. Graduate school will llow me to understand the human mind and how they all function individually. I aim to teach Psychology and become a Academic advisor at a collegiate level. While choosing a path during my undergraduate studies, I knew that anything I decided to do would make a impact in society and that has become my passion. While taking a few Psychology classes during my undergraduate studies, I was very intrigued with my class Social Psychology as it seemed to involve both Sociology being my major and Psychology. I m intrested in helping the community
The stereotypes of people living in poverty in America are so deeply imbedded in our society. We as educators may need to examine our beliefs and open our mind to new interpretations of the behavior of those struggling without basic needs. Doing so, however, is the first step to improving our success and effectiveness with educating students in poverty and helping end the cycle of suffering. Educator’s attitudes and beliefs shape you tone of voice, your body posture, your facial expressions and your actions towards students. Working daily with students who are classified as living in poverty. I believe it is our duty as educators to work with student’s effect by generational poverty. One thing I do not see a lot of is help
After reading a short section about African American male educational struggles, I wanted to learn more about the obstacles they face and what is being done to bridge the achievement gap. Throughout the semester I have been learning a lot about the importance of multicultural education, therefore I wanted to dive deeper into African American culture and understand why many Black male students are not successful in the American educational system compared to White and Asian American students. Furthermore, as a future teacher, I thought it would be helpful to research this topic, since it is still a prominent issue facing African American communities today. The more I know and understand the challenges, the greater the chance I will become part
While discussing this issue, it is crucial to focus on helping those of “low-income kids, English-language learners, and kids with disabilities the support they need to thrive” by raising the standard of education that these students are receiving to the same level as their higher-class counterparts (“Hillary Clinton on K-12 Education”). By improving the public schools that these minority students attend, there is higher the possibility that these students will continue on to higher education
My education has covered a wide array of topics like child development, abuse and mental illness in families, and diversity within parenting and families. This education is essential when working with students, as they are so often faced with issues outside of school that may impact their ability to focus in school. For example, they may have issues at home with family that preoccupy their minds and prevent them from learning. They may be stricken with poverty and worry about where their next meal is going to come from, or they may have an illness that prevents them from coming to school every day and they fall behind. These issues are ones that have been discussed extensively in my classes. Among many other things, I have learned that when working with people in any capacity you need to consider every aspect of their life to successfully help them.
Instillation of hope could be utilized as the primary factor in Barbara's case. I agree with you that Barbara did walk into the group therapy session with very low hope in herself and viewing her life situation as "doomed to be miserable". From the case study, it appeared as if Barbara losing her job was the "straw that broke the camel's back" as they say. Even though Barbara disliked her job she seemed to still value the fact that she was employed. Once she lost her low paying job that she disliked it triggered more negative cognitions about herself.
My professional goal is to attend a 4 year college in the Mainland to get a Pediatric degree. I chose this as my professional goal because I have personal experience of losing a baby. That made me even more love babies and help the ones in need. This professional goal is important to me because there is some people out there in the world that does not take care of their babies after they give birth or even while they are pregnant. They do not eat healthy or they drink alcohol or, even do drugs that will hurt the baby. It is also important to me because if your baby is born unhealthy or in pain some parents will not care or do anything to help the baby. Seeing babies unhealthy or not being taken care of hits home hard for me. This goal might
My personal goal I wish to attain within the next year is purchase my first home. I am not sure where I would like to purchase my first home at this particular time because I am not sure if I want to stay in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana or move to Atlanta, Georgia. By being the only child and not sure if I want to move back home to Marrero, Louisiana, but I will continue to way my options before deciding on the exact location. Also, my personal plan within in the next year is to purchase a new car. In the next 5 years, my personal goals are to be in a committee relationship and traveling to Hawaii, Jamaica, London, Paris, Africa, and Costa Rica. Also, I plan to take my immediate family on a cruise to the Bahamas as an appreciation for helping,
As a teacher, I profoundly understand the challenges and uncertainties that many minority students face today. I have worked in public education for more than a decade. During those years, I
Life is a continual learning process, which requires a strong method to develop better ways of apprenticeship. Personally, being able to obtain a higher education gives me an opportunity to be better in many ways. Everyone should have any personal goals in life in order to survive, prosper and succeed in every journey that life gives. As for me, being a University of Phoenix student, I hope to achieve all of my goals on which I have been trying to pursue and obtain through the years. They are goals that I believe I need to have to be a successful member of the society, and through attending the university I also hope to gain a more positive image of myself, build my personal growth, along with achieving
I feel as though I put more time into my personal goals than my professional goals. For my first personal goal, I definitely achieved it. I traveled to 8 different countries, sometimes traveling alone and I figured out how to navigate each and every one. Through a mix of confidence, google maps and trial and error, I figured out the best methods to travel in each country I was in. For my personal goals centered around Ireland, I feel as though I achieved those as well. I used public transportation with ease and knew which buses took me where I needed to go. I traveled to some touristy things and some lesser known things throughout Ireland, like the Powerscourt Estate which has one of the top gardens in the world according to National Geographic.
After college and graduate school I plan to be a Marriage and Family therapist or a child psychologist. Not only do both require an excellent ability to communicate; both also require a reasonable knowledge and understanding of children. That is why this summer I decided to work/intern in a child-care facility. I believed it would give me an opportunity to expand my knowledge on children. For one, it would I get to interact with them on a one-on-one basis and group basis. Everyday or every week I would be able to see how they are developing; how they are progressing in life. It would also give me another opportunity to learn how to more effectively communicate with people, especially those of a younger

Choosing a career in medicine is my first career choice, and in many ways it is the only career choice I want. From professional athletes that we see on television, to the educators that have taught me and many others through the years, they all have committed themselves to extensive study. They have practiced countless of hours to master their individual skill set for their profession. I see myself following in the same footsteps, but as a pediatrician. I want to also master the skills that it takes to be a great doctor. It may not be simple and the outcome may not be near, but with extensive studying and practice I want to achieve and master the set of skills of pediatric diagnosis and eventually improve the medical process. This is my
