On a family cruise trip to Jasper this past summer, I had the privilege of meeting the most inspiring individuals. Her name was Zainab, a model of the ideal teenager in nearly every way. Zainab constantly had a smile, and her unwavering politeness earned her the admiration of everyone. She had even brought her schoolwork along for the week-long vacation and could be frequently seen making revisions. She was the model of a driven and determined future doctor with a meaningful future ahead; so it was to my great surprise that her sister informed me of her degenerative affliction, a rare form of granulomatous disease — which tends to limit its victims lifespan to forty years of age, or less. In the film Princess Bride written by William Goldman, Inigo Montoya exhibits a similar kind of perseverance in life, as he sails on a twenty-year journey from the moment his father fell to the blade of the six-fingered man. This theme of perseverance has been a common one ever since we were children. As kids, we begin to idolize famous artists and athletes. We aspire and become determined that one day we will become the new celebrities or famous athletes of tomorrow when in reality we fail to realize that it takes a lot of perseverance and resilience to ever be signed to a record label or compete in the Olympics. The character of Inigo Montaya suggests that perseverance plays a pivotal role in one's life, powering them to overcome struggles and develop resilience even when all odds are against them. Inigo Montoya embodies the essence of perseverance amidst overwhelming odds. Despite the anguish of his past—marked by the brutal murder of his father—Inigo channels his grief into a lifelong mission of unwavering pursuit of vengeance.
