The Forbidden City, also known as Zijincheng is a palace complex and was used by Emperors of china from 1420 to 1911 A.D. With more than 8,700 rooms, 24 emperors occupied the forbidden city. The Ming Dynasty spent 14 years and hired about a million workers to build Zijincheng. Zijincheng “was ordered built by Zhu Di (the Yongle Emperor) who lived A.D. 1360-1424. He was crowned emperor in 1402 after forcefully overthrowing his nephew”. The Forbidden City is enclosed by a 10 meter high defensive wall for security. The first line of defence was a moat. At each corner of the forbidden city stands a very tall watchtower which was heavily guarded. The Forbidden City is one of the most recognizable locations in all of China. The Founder of the Ming Dynasty was the Hongwu Emperor. The article, ‘Ancient Origins’ states that the Ming Dynasty is “A life of abuse torture and murder for thousands of women”. Hongwu is considered to be one of the most important emperors because he ordered his army to expel the Mongol invaders that ruled China for a century in 1368. The women of the Forbidden City were called concubines. A concubine is a “woman living in quasi-matrimonial relationships; they live together with a married man but to whom they are not formally married.” Ming Tombs. It was common in imperial China to have a concubine if they could afford it. Concubinage was one of the only way a poor woman could achieve financially. Many Emperors had closely up to 9,000 concubines, “many of whom had been kidnapped from their homes and were forbidden to leave their gilded prison except when they were called to the emperor’s bed”. jSince foot-binding was prominent at the time, the women could not walk or run, the women had to be carried naked to the expected man. The author of Women Behind the Heirs of the Forbidden City, Sanrah claims,”In ancient China, emperors adopted concubinage primarily to satisfy their sexual pleasures and in addition, ensured they had multiple male heirs to maintain the family dynasty.” Behind closed doors, Hongwu kept concubines confined and subject them to torture.
