Health is the greatest wealth a person possesses, where, the day to day diet of a person helps determine the role nutrition can play in one’s health. Food is the basic need of survival, however, the uneven amount and proportion of food consumed can become crucial to life and ultimately the overall health. Overweight and obesity are the main drawbacks society witnesses as a result to the uneven nutritional food consumption. Moreover, as the unhealthy eating patterns continue to rise in households, the rate of childhood obesity is also increasing. The involvement of parents in their children’s lifestyle can help the children maintain a healthy weight and therefore, help prevent childhood obesity. The American Academy of Pediatrics in their article, AAP Updates Recommendations on Obesity Prevention: It’s Never Too Early to Begin Living a Healthy Lifestyle, states out some of the guidelines for parents and families to follow to help prevent childhood obesity. They recommend changing the foods brought into the house and to be buying less high-calorie snacks and beverages and limiting them to only special occasions and celebrations (2015). Furthermore, they recommend keeping healthy foods and beverages to be readily available at plain sight, whereas, keeping the high-calorie foods put away and less visible (2015). Additionally, they recommend encouraging children to eat servings of fruits and vegetables five or more times each day (2015). They also, encourage increased level of physical activity and reduced sedentary behaviors such as less TV time and longer sleep time (2015). These simple steps of healthy eating habits, increased physical activity and reduced sedentary behaviors can help prevent childhood obesity and help children make right and healthful
