Positive illusions are unrealistic, biased attitudes that individuals have about themselves and towards other individuals, normally close friends or family members. Illusion of control is the distorted opinion of the individual’s personal control over different types of situations. These individuals believe they have control over the roll of a dice or the flip of a coin. An example of illusion of control is when a gambler thinks they can control the dice being rolled or the next card to be flipped over.

The belief is that people who talk about suicided aren’t really going to go through with it; this belief is completely false. Often suicidal people make subtle hints leading up to the event. Some subtle hints include: I know where my dad’s gun is if I ever need it, I have the perfect plan to end it all, I wonder what that chemical taste like or, I wonder what it feels like to bleed out and leave forever. Others often discuss their depression and how there isn’t anything to live for. Another false belief is suicide cannot be prevented. If an individual gets help early enough for the depression and suicidal thought Suicide begins as a chain of events. First, the individual feels worthless and inadequate.

If we selected two individuals from around the world they would likely be just as similar as two individuals living in the same country. The greatest level of genetic diversity is in Sub Saharan Africa. This is likely because humans originated from this region and have lived there the longest, leading to greater genetic variation than anywhere in the world.

9/24/2015 In class today we talked about illusion. Illusion of control is the tendency for humans to believe they can control or at least influence outcomes which they clearly cannot. Langer showed that people often behave as if chance events are accessible to personal control. In a series of experiments, Langer demonstrated first the prevalence of the illusion of control and second, that people were more likely to behave as if they could exercise control in a chance situation where skill cues were present (Science).
The three myths about suicide are suicide cannot be prevented if someone is set on taking their life, asking someone whether they are thinking about suicide will plant the idea in their head, and people who are making suicidal threats are just seeking attention. I know that many people think that once someone is set on something, no one is able stop them, but I believe that suicide in different. Those who are thinking about committing suicide need to know that someone is there for them and that their life has a purpose. Also, asking someone if they’re planning on taking their own life can actually help since you are giving that person a chance to share their problems and you might be able to find solutions to their difficulties. The one myth

Suicide is caused by all sorts of things such as; alcohol, depression, being laid off your job, bullying, morning, and depression. According to Sarah Wu, “In New York, there are 6 suicides for every 100,000 people living in the city. “Krishna was pushing at the door. Then he gave up and went to a smaller doorway next to it. ‘I’ll get in, or else!’ He stepped up, pushed, and fell right through. Krishna lay on the beautiful floor. ‘Well, come in. There is no door here, just empty air’” (Buck, 88). In this quote, the illusions of the palace are meant to further beautify the palace, and is a defense against enemies who would try to barge in. It is also a way to test a man’s pride, the answer being his reaction when he falls for the illusions. Another example of illusion is in the story of the Golden Mongoose, where, the family is sent to heaven when they see past the illusion, and give Yama the last of their food. In Nala and Damayanti’s story, Nala uses illusions to hide himself, from the world, from Nala, and from himself. Throughout the Mahabharata, there is a strong emphasis on the illusions that cloud our eyes from reality, and how one must look past them to find resolution. They are often a test made to test one’s values and beliefs. However, illusions are also a form of self-defense—used to hide from others, from people important to you, or from even yourself. This is seen just as often in the book, in the story of the Golden Mongoose and Nala and Damayanti; and is also reflected elsewhere in the story when Yudhishthira is tested before being able to go to heaven, and when the Pandavas disguise themselves in the thirteenth year.
