A new study suggested that extended use of electronic devices, such as laptops, smartphones, and tablets may cause symptoms of depression in teens. According to the researchers from the San Diego State University and Florida State University that people, particularly teens, who spend more time in social media are more vulnerable to develop depression.
“One hour, maybe two hours [a day], doesn't increase risk all that much. But once you get to three hours - and especially four and then, really, five hours and beyond — that's where there's much more significant risk of suicide attempts, thinking about suicide and major depression,” said Jean M. Twenge, lead author of the study from the San Diego State University.
The researchers analyzed numerous surveys to determine when the rise of depression cases began and what may have contributed to the rising number. According to the 2017 report from Center for Disease Control and Prevention, depression and suicide are significant public health concerns with more than 40,000 Americans dying by suicide each year.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has published a fact sheet of statistics on suicide in the United States. In 2007, it is reported that suicide was the tenth leading cause of death. Furthermore, for every suicide committed, eleven were attempted. A total of 34,598 deaths occurred from suicide with an overall rate of 11.3 suicide deaths per 100,000 people. (NIMH, 2010). Risk factors were also noted on this report and listed “depression and other mental disorders, or a substance abuse disorder (often in combination with other mental disorders). More than ninety percent of people who die by suicide have these risk factors (NIMH, 2010).”
Over 40 million Americans have been diagnosed with at least one mental illness (NIMH 2015), and 43,000 Americans commit suicide every year (NIMH 2014), with most of those deaths deemed preventable (Mann et. al 2005).

Depression is an everlasting issue that sometimes never seems to go away. Many people around the world struggle with depression while others cannot grasp the concept that depression is a big deal and it’s not something you can just get rid of. The Center for Disease Control is responsible for keeping track and providing facts and figures for suicide. They describe suicide as a serious problem and a leading cause of death in the United States. It is in fact the 10th leading cause of death across all age groups. In 2013, an estimated 41,149 people successfully committed suicide (Understanding). In contrast, 494,169 attempted to harm or kill themselves but failed (Understanding). Many more people are thought to have tried and not sought out help, leaving them an unknown factor in the equation. All in all, suicide and its attempt are responsible 6.1 billion dollars in medical and work loss costs in the United States annually (Understanding).

In the same year, just about 630,000 people went to the emergency room due to self-inflicted injury (Das, 2015). Between 2013 and 2014, 5.4% of the non- institutionalized United States' population experienced depression within any 14-day period. One-tenth of the United States population in 2014 reported two or more weeks of psychologically unhealthy days within a 30-day period; the mean American adult reported 3.4 unhealthy days (Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2015c). Hundreds of thousands of people die due to suicide every year. This number is estimated to double by 2020 should the current trend continue. The primary cause of these suicides is mental disorders and harmful use of alcohol - which in itself is a result of mental health related conditions. The World Health Organization reports indicate that 20% of the world 's children and adolescents suffer from one or more mental disorders and according to the Kim foundation, 57.7 million people in the US suffer from a mental health disorder.

In a national survey of high school students, nearly 20% of teens thought about attempting suicide, and more than 8% made a suicide attempt. Over half of all kids who suffer from depression will eventually attempt suicide at least once, and over 7% will die as a result.
Suicide has become one of the leading cause of death in adolescents. More youth die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, combined. I ask myself, what has changed in the past years that has caused these rates to continuously increase. When you do research on adolescent suicide you’ll find hundreds of studies based on background, race, poverty, bullying etc., but very few include analysis of trends among sexual minority youth from cohorts of the same geographic population (Peter et al., 2016)
